TiaanGR 2 Posted December 16, 2021 Posted December 16, 2021 Hi there, I just have a question for anyone that might now of this server. Would it be possible to run emby off of this server as this is a prober server and I am assuming I can just install Linux or Something on it as the OS and then run emby on it like with windows? Or well as with my current setup laptop with Windows 11 OS and emby server
Luke 42078 Posted December 16, 2021 Posted December 16, 2021 Hi, looking at the specs, I think this should be fine running Emby Server.
TiaanGR 2 Posted December 16, 2021 Author Posted December 16, 2021 Hi Luke, Awesome thanks so the stock standard specs should be fine of this server 1
CassTG 113 Posted December 17, 2021 Posted December 17, 2021 What is the spec, as the model number can mean anything as that model comes with processors from a celeron to a xeon. To be fair Emby can run on raspberry Pi or a nas so it should run fine as Luke said. However what software you want depends on how you want to use the server. If its Emby only then yes Debian 11 (clean and minimal) and Emby server is a great combo. However want to make more use of it than just an emby server? then Debian 11 and a docker stack means you can have an emby server, a nextcloud instance, password manager, your own cloud photo etc etc etc.
TiaanGR 2 Posted December 17, 2021 Author Posted December 17, 2021 Hi there Cass, Awesome thanks for the info. The specs are a Xeon CPU a 2.4GhZ and 4GB EMMC RAM if I remember correctly. Thanks, Tiaan

Thanks, Tiaan No probs So doing some digging, i presume it comes with the Intel Xeon X3430 chip as thats the only one in the 3400 series that runs at 2.4Ghz 4 cores 4 threads with a cpu passmark score of 2199. So no intel quicksync etc so transcoding is not going to be great if at all. However if its all direct play that wont really matter to be fair, If you already have the machine just try it out see how ya get on and run in pararell with your Windows machine, if not, be interested to know the cost as could be better options out there. One thing, does it come with at least an ssd? as Emby sure does love and perform better on ssd.
TiaanGR 2 Posted December 17, 2021 Author Posted December 17, 2021 Hi there, Yes it is in fact that excat one I wasn't near my PC to see the chipset but yes. How will I be able to set my emby server to direct play by default as I am not actually a big fan of the hardware transcoding Haven't actually purchased it yet as in South Africa it is a pretty penny and I dont want to waste that type of money No SSD only 2TB of HDD Storage

With the hardware transcoding isn't it actually maybe better if I only rely on the CPU I mean it is a Xeon after all? Or will both the hardware and CPU Transcoding be a better option as it will only be for emby right now?
CassTG 113 Posted December 17, 2021 Posted December 17, 2021 (edited) Hey no need to apologise at all my typing is bad anyway lol. Yes it is a xeon and i know somewhere ppl quote like 1 transcode per 2000 points on the benchmark score. I never really looked into it and @Lukewould be better to offer advice as i think you would be limited to just normal software transcoding. That is not the end of the world, my Cloud instance has 4 dedicated Epyc cores, but they do not do hardware transcoding as they do not support vaapi. Avoiding transcoding (not including converting incompatible container to another) is down to the choice of client devices and not the server. Most stuff plays on a shield for example without T/C, try and play the same file in Chrome browser however may not. The HDD ui guess is fine, but may want to add an SSD. Only interested in cost wise as there may be better options, for example whilst small the Lenovo M900 with i5 6500t comes with an nvme ssd, an intel 6500T (twice the benchmark score) and intel quicksync, yet is no bigger than a few bluray cases. But again it depends what you want to do i.e if you want to build a homelab to serve ya needs then i get that One server i did look at which is well reviewed for home use is the Dell r210 II (Mark 2 not original) For example a quick look on ebay you can get that with a xeon e3-1230 V2, 16gb Ram, 1Tb HDD and Idrac for circa £160 or 3370 Rand (not sure how that compares price wise. That processor scores 3 times the one in the server you mentioned no intel quicksync but more oomph Edited December 17, 2021 by CassTG
TiaanGR 2 Posted December 17, 2021 Author Posted December 17, 2021 Yeez Thanks my dude! You are really giving me awesome advise! That last comment also gets me thinking again that for that same price I can rather do that as this server with the 2TB Drive in this server is like All in all R2800 in South Africa So just to confirm as in your last example as below neither the Xeon CPU or this one you are reffering to has intel quicksync? 16 minutes ago, CassTG said: For example a quick look on ebay you can get that with a xeon e3-1230 V2, 16gb Ram, 1Tb HDD and Idrac for circa £160 or 3370 Rand (not sure how that compares price wise. CassTG 113 Posted December 17, 2021 Posted December 17, 2021 (edited) Nope neither do, i think there are a cpl of xeon chips do have quicksync, i will check by i believe they end in 35 or 45. There are cheaper versions of the r210II i just picked the first one to give an example. Worth checking the cpu on Intels DB here - Xeon 1245 Quicksync That one for example does inc quicksync as detailed near the bottom as does the 1235, but it changes from generation to generation. But yes many options, for example like the M900 above and just a quick example i found on ebay uk The desktop size M900 with the same i5-6500t which has more oomph (and quicksync)than the first one you mentioned, with 8gb Ram and 240Gb ssd is circa £105 or 2212 Rand So plenty of options My view (and it aint worth much lol would be get the best processor / ram you can in your budget as Hard Drives can be added later cpus less so. (can always mount a google cloud drive via rclone on the server for media storage in the meantime) Edited December 17, 2021 by CassTG
TiaanGR 2 Posted December 17, 2021 Author Posted December 17, 2021 Awesome thanks man! I really appreciate the advise I'll definitely do some more research now for a while regarding the better options of CPU and RAM. Ideally I would like to add more drives as I go on but I mean currently I am okay with a 2TB Drive not to mention it is an external Seagate with a Good win! If I have any other questions I will ask!
