How does Emby handle file caching with separate storage?

Hello friendly people!

I'm currently rebuilding my homelab and want to get dedicated hardware for Emby. What I wasn't able to find in the knowledgebase or on the forum is how Emby handles file caching for currently used media.

My thinking is that since my Fileserver is not that great at random IO, the dedicated Emby box could cache the whole movie file while playback is active and not buffer from a relatively slow network location. How is this currently handled and would it be possible for me to modify this behavior?

Depending on the possibilities I'd consider different hardware configs for the Emby server regarding local storage and network capabilities.

Thanks for the great software and community, many issues have been had and fixed by reading the forum!

Hi, Emby Server does not cache media files. They are served directly from the library folders that you configure.

Hi Luke,

thanks for the fast reply. In that case I will probably change how my storage layout will be configured.

What OSes are you running for the storage server and what OS for Emby Server?
Depending on OS combination you can use an SSD to cache frequently used data as well as fully pull a media file when it's accessed that could help.

You can get some improvement this way which might be enough but it's always better to fix the source problem if possible.
