Changing multiple artists

stop what? i am not following..

i skimmed the thread so i cant be sure but i think what is being got at here is.....

when emby sees a populated MUSICBRAINZ_ARTISTID tag emby will ignore the text in the standard artist tag (or to be more accurate Emby will 'prefer' the mbzid rather than the artist tag)

eg

  • tag artist=Alex Ross Feat Dakota & T-Pain
  • tag MUSICBRAINZ_ARTISTID=50d3b8e4-2531-4434-8395-d4ae8bdbeba2;3fb5ac5a-1446-4f2a-896f-0630e1405214;ce55e49a-32f4-4757-9849-bf04d06d5fcc
  • emby ui shows=Alex Ross,Dakota,T-Pain

I had always assumed, Emby was not splitting on 'feat', rather it was preferring and using the mbzid tag (and splitting that eg on ';')

I assume the OP is wondering why Emby is showing a sanitised list of artists, with removal of the connecting words...the above is the reason..its talked about here

It's so that you can click each artist separately and avoid extra artist records in the database, but we can stop doing that.

you are suggesting you turn off embys ability to identify multiple artists on a track? under specific circumstances? surely not generally, i must of misunderstood, its Embys best music feature 🙂

I actually went through and changed this one back in Emby to Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys this weekend and then clicked the "Lock this item to prevent future changes" and went back in just now and checked it and Emby has already changed it back to Jay-Z;Alicia Keys? And this is after I clicked Lock it to prevent further changes after I made the change to it to put it back the way it is in the metadata? So changing it in Emby was useless and so was the Lock it button.

fyi i would delete that file..there is a private message function on this forum when you click on a user...

theres probably a few things going on here like getting to the bottom of rescanning whilst metadata is locked.. but it also is not going to help that you have multiple tag formats in your file

assuming you have no need for this, i would configure mp3tag to remove all tag formats and write your single preferred tag format that all your apps/devices understand (i doubt you would have a problem with id3v2.3)..may not be the only issue but will help see the wood from the trees

have sent you file back with just 2.3

@LukeIf emby music metadata is 100% driven by embedded tags, and editing emby metadata / locking metadata is not going to have an expected effect, maybe the edit music metadata form should be made read only for things which are read only?

full disclosure @Shai1 i dont know what is expected to work with editing metadata in emby, because i do all music metadata management  in mp3tag. i do know that emby is mostly (if not entirely) driven by embedded tags for music.

@Luke & @ginjaninja 1st off; let me say Thank you for both of you digging into this. Alot of apps and programs out there don't even get a response from the developers; so you guys are already much more appreciated.

As for locking for future changes; my thing is if it's not going to do anything; then there is no need for it. I work on backends of websites and metrics and see plenty of things that are just kind of common sense from a customers perspective.

Now I understand it doesn't do much good at all to edit metadata in Emby. I appreciate the candor and honesty. I'll have to I just looked at a few tracks in mp3Tag to check the tag formats and I do see what you are speaking of. I thought it might be better to have multiple formats in case something had an issue with reading a different tag format.

Thank you for the suggestion

Went through and checked all the tags and made sure they were all ID3 tags. Rescanned all music files into the library and I still have the same problem. I will send another file to @ginjaninja  The feat. artist works when playing the same music through thumb drive, Samsung Music, VLC, Windows Media Player.

well ive learnt something...Emby splits artist tag on ' feat. '. apologies my lack of awareness slowed down/derailed  the investigation.

so assuming you want the artist to show as ' A feat. B', then i think you are out of luck as i dont think you can change then lock the artist metadata on a file (after a refresh metadata it will revert).

i think i now understand what @Luke was asking...namely..is a good idea for Emby to split on ' feat. '?

The holy grail would be for Emby to understand that there are 2 artists and a connecting word ' feat. '...so all could be shown against the track and the individual artists still understood/searchable/clickable.

but if thats not realistic then i think there is no perfect answer to suit everyone...prior to this thread, i had thought the balance was...

for admins who went to the trouble of adding mbzids or artistS tag, then show two artists, else show the artist tag as is and only split on more certain separators like ';'.

but the current design will have supporters and naysayers alike, i am sure.

lockable artist metadata would help the op but only somewhat because of the manual effort.

if i had to make a judgement i would guess more people would like the current behaviour as is than those like the op who need to see the connecting words and dont care that the artists are not understood.

Well fudge; I know there are plenty of people who probably want it to have them as artist;artist. Thanks again for digging in to this.

just an idea @Luke

maybe the artist field (showing A feat. B ie the plain string) could be stored separately to the track's artists.

the 'view artist' ... command could cascade out to the full set of artists.

I would love to see the connecting words like 'feat'  (but not at the expense of the multiple artist understanding) . but  would be happy with multiple artists not being directly clickable if wherever there is a track in the ui i can get to the individual artists....I think that may be a generally welcome improvement.

(I am conscious that currently the "view artist" ... action  makes only  the first artist accessible)

edit

on reflection it perhaps is a little more important that track tiles show the track's artist rather than a 'plain artist string'. navigation would be made more cumbersome (if i had to use ... menu) but still more than doable and worth considering. A simpler compromise might be track tiles continue to show the (first of the) track's artists rather than the imagined 'plain string'.
