Live TV starts, then stops, stays streaming on restart

I don’t have the Roku and emby version numbers at the moment but will get them as soon as possible.

Roku Express 4K+ 2021

remote stream from emby server which is  on Win 10 machine

This happens only on Live TV, so not with content stored on the remote server. It has happened with the Express since it was set up This has never happened watching Live TV on devices at the server location (Ultras, Streaming Stick 4K, web UIs).

steps and issue:

go to Guide>navigate to Channel>press OK on Roku remote>select Tune to Channel —- channel plays for less than a minute then emby jumps back to the Guide. Select the Channel again>press OK on Roku remote>Tune to Channel — channel plays without issue.

I’ve found a couple of similar reports in old posts but no solution other than waiting for the next emby version. Even then the OP doesn’t report back that the issue was resolved.

TIA.

@Luke I think these are the log files from before and after the event.

My mom is the one having this happen. She now says it usually doesn’t happen on the first live channel she watches, but when she changes to another live channel she gets the event where after a few seconds emby jumps back to the Guide. She hasn’t described it quite that way before. Previously she said it’s always when she first starts watching live TV. So I’m saying I’m not entirely sure the sequence leading up to the issue. Anyway, she said tonight she was able to change channels a couple of times before it happened after watching a third for several minutes.

thanks for looking

Can you please attach the emby server log as well? Thanks.

Hi.  Exactly how is she switching channels and have you set any concurrent stream limits on her user or the Live TV stream?

@Lukeserver log uploaded. Sorry was working on my mobile and missed it.

@ebrShe's using the Roku remote back arrow (upper left button, to the left of the Home button) to get back to the Guide. No limits set.

Are you still running into this?

Yes. I assume nothing helpful in the logs.

Is it ever the case where she starts to bring up a channel, it doesn't quite load and then she backs out and tries to choose a different one?

According to her, it is much less frequent than the issue I originally described, but on occasion she'll select a channel, get the "loading" pinwheel but before the channel loads she'll be put back to the Guide. Not quite the same as what you're asking which  is, if while loading does she back out and try a different channel - she said No to that.

Okay, that just sounds like a channel that won't tune.  Near the bottom of the screen, when that happens, there should be a little message that says something like "Unable to tune channel at this time".

@ebr I was in the room yesterday when this happened…

Channel 11 had been streaming for an hour or so when the clock rolled to 6p and the news started, still on Channel 11. No channel change. About 5 or so minutes into the news emby jumps back to the Guide. There wasn’t an “unable to tune” message at the bottom of the screen. I asked how often that happens, where it jumps to the Guide after a program change, and she said about as often as changing channels and getting bumped to the Guide.

I can upload the logs from that time if needed, just not sure if you got much from the previous logs to need another look?

Any other thoughts on what to check, or settings to tweak?

Hi.  Is the "Are you still watching prompt" enabled in the playback settings?

Posted

It is. For situations like the one where I was there I asked her if she had seen that prompt. She had and pressed the OK button on the remote. Maybe it didn't register.

Are you thinking I should disable and for a few days see if the issue goes away?

Okay, yeah that's the issue.  If she is actively watching the TV you can leave that option enabled and tell her to hit the "down" button on that prompt.  There is an issue in the current release where that is the only button recognized there (that is fixed in the beta).

If she routinely has the TV on without paying attention to it, then turn that option off.
