pjshots 4 Posted October 13, 2021 Posted October 13, 2021 Hi, Emby on a Debian 10 VM Media storage on Windows 10 Pro Share, mounted a CIFS to Emby VM with emby:users as rw permissions and this works as Emby writes to the location for temporary transcode files Issue: When I press play in the web interface, the circle spins 2 or 3 times, then disappears, then after about 30 seconds I get a message saying no streams can be played. On the server side, its trying to transcode, but even after the web message, the ffmpeg is still going until I stop the Emby service. My setup was working fine for years, but since I've moved from Hyper-V to Proxmox, Emby is really unreliable at playing content. First, I though it was something to do wtih the SMB mount on the Emby VM, but after trying all the settings, it doesn't make any difference. Yes, I have connectivity and can read/write and its mounted as emby:users . Any help getting it working, without having to redo my metadata would be great. I have tried a new install and it works fine, but if I restore my emby folder, it craps the bed again. Thanks. embyserver.txt ffmpeg-transcode-101a60c6-92fe-400f-be18-4b1503bb23ae_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-88764bdb-2dbe-4dd2-ba53-d45dd6f72a4b_1.txt

If I open the file on the web player, or anything else, it does what's in the logs above. It never actually plays the item. Its related to my metadata somehow, as when I set up a new install, Emby worked fine until I copied my data back in place :-(
Luke 42078 Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 @pjshots are you still having an issue with this? Are you able to update to Emby Server 4.6.4?

Are you able to update to Emby Server 4.6.4? Hi Luke, I had to start with a new DB in the end, running 4.6.4.0 now. I'm sure its not 100% stable as it once was but I'll live with it at the moment (likely something between my Windows 10 Share and Debian fsbtab entry may need a tweak). At least I can finally utilise GPU hardware in Proxmox, unlike Hyper-V and have no issues doing things like recording TV shows, deleting media, so write access is being utilised, which I know is the first thing to check. Thnks anyhow, will see how it goes. Edited October 29, 2021 by pjshots
squ4ress 0 Posted October 31, 2021 Posted October 31, 2021 Hey pjshots, when i see correctly, you've got your transcoding temp folder on a network share. I tried this too, but after i switched my temp folder, from the local machine to a network share, my transcoding got scuffed. Everyone got playback issues. //rs820/media /mnt/smb4k/RS820/media cifs credentials=/root/.smbcredentials,vers=3.0,uid=998,gid=998 this fstab entry works fine for me. I'm using proxmox aswell and emby runs in an LXC with GPU Passthrough, no issues, atleast when i let the temp folder on my local machine.
Luke 42078 Posted October 31, 2021 Posted October 31, 2021 Yea I would not recommend putting the transcoding temp folder on a network drive as that generally will not perform all that great. Try blanking it out and changing it back to default. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.
pjshots 4 Posted October 31, 2021 Author Posted October 31, 2021 Hi, thanks will take a look at the fstab and let you know. On my new setup, I left the transcoding section blank, just in case it was that. It's on a large nvme drive so performance is great so far.
pjshots 4 Posted October 31, 2021 Author Posted October 31, 2021 Firstly, thank you so so much @Luke for adding in the option 'Enable HDR tone mapping'. Only my TV is 4K HDR so its excellent finally having it colour the content correctly on other devices. So, after having a play, it looks like I can narrow it down as follows: Emby Apps work fine: transcoding, skipping on the timeline, etc. Emby Web Client: Takes ages to start playing, no matter what bitrate set. Going from a bitrate other than Auto will cause the content to start from the beginning. Tried with hardware transcoding off, same thing. For instance, playing this seems the most issues (TV episode): Video ID : 1 Format : AVC Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec Format profile : High@L3.1 Format settings : CABAC / 5 Ref Frames Format settings, CABAC : Yes Format settings, Reference frames : 5 frames Codec ID : avc1 Codec ID/Info : Advanced Video Coding Duration : 46 min 44 s Bit rate : 870 kb/s Maximum bit rate : 2 728 kb/s Width : 720 pixels Height : 404 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16:9 Frame rate mode : Constant Frame rate : 25.000 FPS Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Progressive Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.120 Stream size : 291 MiB (87%) Title : Video Writing library : x264 core 146 r2538 121396c Encoding settings : cabac=1 / ref=5 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x3:0x113 / me=umh / subme=8 / psy=1 / psy_rd=1.00:0.00 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=1 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / fast_pskip=1 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=12 / lookahead_threads=2 / sliced_threads=0 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / interlaced=0 / bluray_compat=0 / constrained_intra=0 / bframes=3 / b_pyramid=2 / b_adapt=2 / b_bias=0 / direct=3 / weightb=1 / open_gop=0 / weightp=2 / keyint=250 / keyint_min=25 / scenecut=40 / intra_refresh=0 / rc_lookahead=50 / rc=crf / mbtree=1 / crf=21.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=0 / qpmax=69 / qpstep=4 / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00 Color range : Limited Matrix coefficients : BT.709 Codec configuration box : avcC Audio ID : 2 Format : AAC LC Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec Low Complexity Codec ID : mp4a-40-2 Duration : 46 min 44 s Bit rate mode : Variable Bit rate : 124 kb/s Maximum bit rate : 130 kb/s Channel(s) : 2 channels Channel layout : L R Sampling rate : 48.0 kHz Frame rate : 46.875 FPS (1024 SPF) Compression mode : Lossy Stream size : 41.4 MiB (12%) Title : English Language : English But playing a 4K item also causes the issues, but plays just fine when started; changing transcode bitrate works fine and doesn't put this particular content at the beginning: Video ID : 1 Format : HEVC Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding Format profile : Main 10@L5.1@High HDR format : SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible Codec ID : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC Duration : 1 h 55 min Bit rate : 54.1 Mb/s Width : 3 840 pixels Height : 2 160 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16:9 Frame rate mode : Constant Frame rate : 23.976 (24000/1001) FPS Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 (Type 2) Bit depth : 10 bits Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.272 Stream size : 43.6 GiB (90%) Default : Yes Forced : No Color range : Limited Color primaries : BT.2020 Transfer characteristics : PQ Matrix coefficients : BT.2020 non-constant Mastering display color primaries : Display P3 Mastering display luminance : min: 0.0050 cd/m2, max: 4000 cd/m2 Maximum Content Light Level : 3894 cd/m2 Maximum Frame-Average Light Level : 996 cd/m2 Audio #1 ID : 2 Format : MLP FBA 16-ch Format/Info : Meridian Lossless Packing FBA with 16-channel presentation Commercial name : Dolby TrueHD with Dolby Atmos Codec ID : A_TRUEHD Duration : 1 h 55 min Bit rate mode : Variable Bit rate : 4 529 kb/s Maximum bit rate : 7 839 kb/s Channel(s) : 8 channels Channel layout : L R C LFE Ls Rs Lb Rb Sampling rate : 48.0 kHz Frame rate : 1 200.000 FPS (40 SPF) Compression mode : Lossless Stream size : 3.65 GiB (8%) Title : TrueHD Atmos 7.1 Language : English Default : Yes Forced : No Number of dynamic objects : 11 Bed channel count : 1 channel Bed channel configuration : LFE Checked my fstab entry and apart from having its creds on that line (yeah I know, security), its the same now; did a restart after changing it. Luke 42078 Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Hi there, yes, let's please look at log files. thanks.
pjshots 4 Posted November 19, 2021 Author Posted November 19, 2021 Been a bit of time, soz. Resulted to running Emby Server on the Windows 10 VM that holds my storage, to eliminate any network/file share issues. It still does the same as above. Granted, I restored my settings from Emby backup, so will try a clean install and not restore the settings, but that this rate I may have to look for an alternative as I just can't seem to get the web client to work. I've tried Chrome & Firefox, different networks, etc. My stoage is fine for everythnig else so not that and Emby seem to work fine at any bitrate/format/quality for my other Android/Shield devices. Just the web client stops at random intervals. Right now its just done it playing a Direct Play 480p episode, bit pants. I'm away tomorrow, but I grabbed the diagnostics plugin so will post that on Sunday. Thanks guys, know its not the software itself, but it really doesn't seem to like Proxmox > any VM, which is odd as Hyper-V worked for years and never saw this issue once; it was butter smooth.
pjshots 4 Posted December 13, 2021 Author Posted December 13, 2021 Fricking Cloudflare! Cloudflare caching was on, along with normalising URLs. Disabling the cache (not that important to me) and turning off the normalise made Emby work how it should. Not sure if it was moving to Proxmox or just something else. My external and int IPs were the same, as were MAC Addresses, so not sure why the issue happened. Still sets 'Auto' to 1.5mbps at 720p though, which I can't change anywhere. Changing it works fine now, when before, it would cause a hissy fit. It works! Shh, or it might stop. 1
