Playback unreliable after moving from Hyper-V to Proxmox

Hi,

Emby on a Debian 10 VM

Media storage on Windows 10 Pro Share, mounted a CIFS to Emby VM with emby:users as rw permissions and this works as Emby writes to the location for temporary transcode files

Issue: When I press play in the web interface, the circle spins 2 or 3 times, then disappears, then after about 30 seconds I get a message saying no streams can be played. On the server side, its trying to transcode, but even after the web message, the ffmpeg is still going until I stop the Emby service.

My setup was working fine for years, but since I've moved from Hyper-V to Proxmox, Emby is really unreliable at playing content. First, I though it was something to do wtih the SMB mount on the Emby VM, but after trying all the settings, it doesn't make any difference. Yes, I have connectivity and can read/write and its mounted as emby:users .

Any help getting it working, without having to redo my metadata would be great. I have tried a new install and it works fine, but if I restore my emby folder, it craps the bed again. Thanks.

Hi, what do you mean by unreliable?

HI Luke,

If I play something on my Shield, it will play directly, no issue. If I open the file on the web player, or anything else, it does what's in the logs above. It never actually plays the item. Its related to my metadata somehow, as when I set up a new install, Emby worked fine until I copied my data back in place :-(

@pjshots are you still having an issue with this? Are you able to update to Emby Server 4.6.4?

Hi Luke,

I had to start with a new DB in the end, running 4.6.4.0 now. I'm sure its not 100% stable as it once was but I'll live with it at the moment (likely something between my Windows 10 Share and Debian fsbtab entry may need a tweak). At least I can finally utilise GPU hardware in Proxmox, unlike Hyper-V and have no issues doing things like recording TV shows, deleting media, so write access is being utilised, which I know is the first thing to check.

Thnks anyhow, will see how it goes.

Hey pjshots, when i see correctly, you've got your transcoding temp folder on a network share. I tried this too, but after i switched my temp folder, from the local machine to a network share, my transcoding got scuffed. Everyone got playback issues.

//rs820/media /mnt/smb4k/RS820/media cifs credentials=/root/.smbcredentials,vers=3.0,uid=998,gid=998 this fstab entry works fine for me.

I'm using proxmox aswell and emby runs in an LXC with GPU Passthrough, no issues, atleast when i let the temp folder on my local machine.

Yea I would not recommend putting the transcoding temp folder on a network drive as that generally will not perform all that great. Try blanking it out and changing it back to default. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

Hi, thanks will take a look at the fstab and let you know. On my new setup, I left the transcoding section blank, just in case it was that. It's on a large nvme drive so performance is great so far.

Firstly, thank you so so much @Luke for adding in the option 'Enable HDR tone mapping'. Only my TV is 4K HDR so its excellent finally having it colour the content correctly on other devices.

So, after having a play, it looks like I can narrow it down as follows:

Emby Apps work fine: transcoding, skipping on the timeline, etc.

Emby Web Client: Takes ages to start playing, no matter what bitrate set. Going from a bitrate other than Auto will cause the content to start from the beginning. Tried with hardware transcoding off, same thing.

For instance, playing this seems the most issues (TV episode):

But playing a 4K item also causes the issues, but plays just fine when started; changing transcode bitrate works fine and doesn't put this particular content at the beginning:

Checked my fstab entry and apart from having its creds on that line (yeah I know, security), its the same now; did a restart after changing it.

Will post some logs tomorrow, just want to watch some content tonight. Thanks for your help

Hi there, yes, let's please look at log files. thanks.

Been a bit of time, soz. Resulted to running Emby Server on the Windows 10 VM that holds my storage, to eliminate any network/file share issues.

It still does the same as above. Granted, I restored my settings from Emby backup, so will try a clean install and not restore the settings, but that this rate I may have to look for an alternative as I just can't seem to get the web client to work. I've tried Chrome & Firefox, different networks, etc. My stoage is fine for everythnig else so not that and Emby seem to work fine at any bitrate/format/quality for my other Android/Shield devices.

Just the web client stops at random intervals. Right now its just done it playing a Direct Play 480p episode, bit pants. I'm away tomorrow, but I grabbed the diagnostics plugin so will post that on Sunday. Thanks guys, know its not the software itself, but it really doesn't seem to like Proxmox > any VM, which is odd as Hyper-V worked for years and never saw this issue once; it was butter smooth.

Fricking Cloudflare! Cloudflare caching was on, along with normalising URLs. Disabling the cache (not that important to me) and turning off the normalise made Emby work how it should. Not sure if it was moving to Proxmox or just something else. My external and int IPs were the same, as were MAC Addresses, so not sure why the issue happened.

Still sets 'Auto' to 1.5mbps at 720p though, which I can't change anywhere. Changing it works fine now, when before, it would cause a hissy fit.

It works! Shh, or it might stop.
