trailers plugins - any difference?

original post title: trailers plugins - any difference?

There are to plugins that provide movie trailer functionality:  "Cinema Intros" and "Trailers"

Is there any difference in behavior or the source of the trailers provided by these two plugins?  If you have both installed, which plugin does the trailer stuff?

Posted

Hi.  Cinema Intros does not provide trailers.  That plug-in provides the functionality to automatically play intros and trailers before your movies.  You still need a source of the content it will use.  So, they work together.

Okay, sorry for being dunce, but this is super confusing.  How could anyone know how this works?  Why not just combine these to plugins?

The plugins appear to have competing settings:

For Trailers, what are "Display sections", exactly?  I don't see any sections in the libraries or on the home screen.

I do have a button in the item details:

Should there be a Trailers lib on my home screen?  Can't configure it.

Well there is per the Library it creates so no section is needed.

Doesn't the image show you that?   There are 4 sections ie Archive, New on DVD, New on Netflix, New in Theater.

That button applies to local trailer and/or metadata YouTube trailer url from TMDB.  Item url trailers do not apply to do not apply to Cinema Intros to my knowledge.

They are two totally different plugins though,  I could care less about Intros but like checking out trailers.  But overal issue is trailers become dated and takes awhile for devs to update the list.

Dude, I see the sections listed in the plugin, but I don't see them anywhere to be used, hence the question.  I found the 'display on home screen' check box (at the bottom of the long page) and checked it, but it still doesn't show.  At least that gives me some understanding of where I should be seeing it.  OOTB I don't know what to expect.

Now, you say the two plugins are 'totally different', well sure, but ebr says they work together.  I guess you could have Trailers only to get the Trailers library?  If that much is true, then having them separate could make sense, but still it seems it would be better to just combine, since Intros depends on it.  That is my 'new user' opinion.

What do you mean, with My Media and own Latest row per the options.

The Cinema Intro plugin will select trailers from those said section to play before your media per coded parameter of likeness.

But it doesn't as I have LOCAL trailers and Intros use them without the Trailers plugin, ie the additional option.  But everyone has their own setup/configuration.

Include trailers from movies in my library
Requires setup of local trailers.

@Happy2Play You are really getting this thread all confused.  Please keep context.

It would also be nice if you would be in agreement with the other Emby folks.

But I do not agree as these are two totally different plugins that yes do/can work in conjunctions with each other, but neither require each other.

Sure, we can disagree.  Thank you for your view.

Then the above text about required plugin needs to be changed?

Why as 99.9% of users do not have local trailers so it is a requirement for them.

But technically is true as Emby does not download local trailers.

I don't even know what you are talking about.  Local trailers isn't part of this post.  I don't have any local trailers but I can still see trailers.

So you Require Premiere and Trailer plugin to use Cinema Intros with your setup.

Should they be merged I don't think so.  The both can have independent functionality or can work together.  But depends on how you uses each feature.

Regarding the display sections options of the trailers plugin, does the help text underneath not sufficiently describe what it does?

There are basically three types of trailers.
First ones that you download and add to your media so they reside on disc
Second a listing to a trailer for a specific movie or show as listed at the meta-provider
Third those that the trailer plugin can add with additional sections @Happy2Play showed.

Cinema Intro configures how and what is show pre movie or episode
It can show upcoming movies, Dvd & Blu-ray releases, upcoming movies on Netflix, older movies. These would come from the trailers plugin.
It can also Include trailers from movies in your library if you have them.
You can of course set smart parental controls on these show a child that's allowed to watch PG-13 doesn't see PG-17 or R trailers.
It can also be set to play trailers from unwatched content.

Besides being able to show trailers before the main media plays you can also play videos based on Codecs used in the media.

Last but not least you can have a canned video you want always played.
This could be a short video that's basically "brought to you buy" or what ever you want it to be. You can use this for anything you want.

or maybe around Christmas time something like this:

Two Plugins
These are two very different plugins with different features and you can use either by itself or both together.
If you want to only use the Cinema Into plugin to play your own video or codec intros or even local trailers you have no need for the trailers plugin.
If you want trailers but have no need for Cinema Intros then you don't need that plugin.

Not really.  First, I have no context of what this thing is or does.  (Think new user and doesn't know all the stuff you know.)
Second, these trailers are said to be added to my library - what does that mean?  As a library, or used within my libraries, or both?  The trailers are used by the Trailer button on the item detail page?
Third, it says they can be used within intros and such, so that sounds like a behind-the-scenes kind of thing used by another function.
Fourth, it says "Display sections" - to display where, for what?  Is this more like categories or types of trailers?

Now that I can see the "Trailers" library added to my libraries, I see the selected categories of trailers inside that library.  So, "Display sections" apply only to the Trailers library?

The trailers that show up on Movie or TV Shows is pulled in from the meta-data providers we use to get the other info like description, cast members, etc. OR can be local media trailers stored with the main movie.

The trailers plugin is a virtual library all by itself and has nothing to do with your other libs.

Just install both plugins and configure them with the options you want to use and call it a day. :)

While generally that is true, they do show in any other movie library Trailers tab.

Both. You get separate Home Screen Library and in any other movie library Trailers tab, as stated above, and as noted in blank Trailers tab if no plugin installed.

Nope, those would be either your local trailers (downloaded and stored with your media) or links provided by meta-scraper (usually TMDB).

As @cayars explained in detail few posts above, Trailers plugin is one of the sources that Cinema Intros can use:

- Internet trailers (Trailers plugin)

- Local trailers (Own, locally stored trailers)

- Intros (Custom and/or Audio Video intros, also own locally stored)

You can opt to use all, any or none, it does not in any way affect Trailers plugin, which you might or might not have installed, it only affects the Internet trailers part of Cinema Intros plugin. Cinema Intros plugin is used only to play content before actual media, you configure which content, according selection above.

Appreciate the info, Mr. GrimReaper.  I hadn't noticed the Trailer tab in my libraries until you forced me to look for it.
