Server Crashing after Latest Update

Is there anything in the Event View for these crashes?  But nothing like this has happened to anyone else that I know of so this would be specific to your hardware/setup to me.

Try this: With Emby not running (system in stable state), open Task Mgr -> Details tab (get CPU and memory columns in view), start Emby, select Emby.exe in Task Mgr and monitor for a few minutes, then open Emby in your browser and monitor

You could also view the Performance tab to see CPU, memory, and I/O concurrently.

Install the portable version of emby - ensure to not install it over the top of your current Emby install. !

Then run that (you'll need to do a basic install to get it operational).

If the portable version works (doesn't crash your system), but your real Emby install does - then you may have a corrupt emby binary or library somewhere - possibly caused by your SSD errors ?

Install from here - instructions are underneath the ZIP

https://emby.media/windows-server.html

Create a temp folder - ie c:\emby-temp and install into there.

Caught it before it crashed this time.

Multiple instances of Opera were open and suspended(16 of them!), when i clicked end task it took over 5 minutes to kill them all and regain control of the server desktop

We're talking about the browser hanging or crashing.  I would suggest running hardware diagnostics to look for possible hardware failures.

I would check/remove any browser extensions installed.
Look at programs that start automatically with windows and deactivate anything you aren't familiar with.

If using any security program other than what came with windows try turning that off as a test.

If none of the above sheds any insight, try rebooting windows into safe mode with networking and see if you still have the same issue or not.

Any feedback - did you try this ?

Quick update

I loaded portable server and it ran fine for Hours, so I re-installed Emby server over itself and it has been running since this morning.

I did 3 main things, which any of them could have fixed it.

1. uninstalled all apps that installed same day as update

2. As part of system checking I did a mem test and mobo test(all tested fine), ran DISM command -"DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" to reload all "original windows" files that may have been updated or changed for any installs.

3. I Loaded Emby server on top of my existing copy.

I will keep you updated over the next few days especially when I install the new SSDs to replace the mechanical drives so I can do benchmark testing!!

@LukeThe hardware checks out fine.

Browser would only hang if I launched it from Emby icon in system tray.

That is why I think it is a stray or bad dll or request to one that causes it to go off the Rails

Per my other post, My system appears to be stable ATM.

I will report back more after I install the new SSDs without using the raid controller to rule that out as well

What exactly did you do?

@Luke

I used a paid program - Memtest and Windows Memory Diagnostic to test and verify Memory is fine.

I used the Asrock utilities which checks the Mother Board and all its connected devices and controllers.

I have the latest Bios(has not changed in 3 Years) loaded as well on my Asrock Z170M extreme Mobo.

Everything is wired direct to the Mobo no extra Graphics cards or other device connected. just my M.2 SSD drive for Windows 10 Professional and a separate Partition for Software installations which is very minimum and my 4 Mechanical Drives setup in Raid(motherboard has built in controller) for the Storage

So the fact it only crashed when you loaded anything 'emby' suggests you had a bad Emby DLL of some sort.  The fact you reloaded it and the issue is now resolved reinforces this view.  How it happended will be very difficult to track down - could have been the SATA bus isues, HDD RAID issues, could be a corrupt download during the recent install ...

But - it's fixed 👍
