Jerky image on Server Browser but not on any other client

I have recently noticed that some of the videos (all are mkv format; in fact all my videos are mkv) that I attempt to watch using my Firefox 92 browser on the windows 10 pro computer that runs my server, I get a jerky image. Note: only some videos.  If I then view the same video on my client devices (a mixture of iOS, iPadOS, windows theater, chrome with Google TV) the video quality is excellent.  I should also note that if I use VLC as a native windows app, on the same server computer, the video is also perfect.

So it seems that only the Emby client on the server machine shows this image distortion.  As I rarely use the Emby Client on the server to watch videos anyway this is really a "non problem" but I wonder if there is something wrong in my settings somewhere.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

That is likely not as much related to those files being mkvs but to encoding - AVC mkvs would require remuxing only (container swap) which requires relatively little processing power whereas HEVC-encoded mkvs will require transcoding, which might be too taxing for your server (moreso if no HW accelleration). However, without exact example, it's all guesswork only.

If you could provide Media Info section for item that plays smoothly and one that does not, we might get some more insight there.

Wow.  Thanks for such a rapid response

Can you give me a 1, 2, 3 as to how I access that data and I will do it immediately.

Again, thanks for your help

In your web browser, go to any item detail page and scroll all the way down, Media Info section is last section there, make screenshot of that for both items, one that plays ok and one that does not.

I have attached 2 screenshots as requested. Both are episodes from "Inside No 9" series 6,  Episode 4 skips and episode 1 plays smoothly

I await your instructions

Thanks

Those are AVC video files so shouldn't need transcoding because of the codec.

Please play back something and then post the server log as well as the ffmpeg log file if it transcodes or remuxs.

I found 3 log entries under today's date, so I sent them all

Devs will have to comment more

But will guess do to one being interlaced and the other is not.

"DisplayTitle":"1080i H264" "IsInterlaced":true (Transcoded)

"DisplayTitle":"1080p H264" "IsInterlaced":false (Direct Stream) playback problem.

So the question is is the problem episode actual reporting correctly?  But the image above shows the same thing interlaced true vs false.

Just to reinforce what I said at the beginning. None of these issues occur on any of my clients, regardless of operating system employed or the video type being displayed

You can try installing Theater Desktop on server machine and enable Deinterlacing in Video settings, see how does that compare.

Well, that worked a treat.  I installed Emby Theatre for windows and it plays all files without issue. I didn't even touch the settings menu, it worked straight out of the box.

Again, as I said earlier there was no problem with any file when played through VLC media player - but using these standalone apps defeats the purpose of having an integrated server system.  And although I rarely use the browser on the server to view movies or TV series, knowing that I now can by using the windows client is very comforting.

Thanks for that tip.

So the jerkiness when playing from within my browser is not carried over to the stand-alone app.  I guess I'll never understand why the server does this, but hey, who cares, if all now functions as it should.

Can I disable the "load on start" feature or is that an instruction to start the server on launching windows? Again, no big issue as I normally open a browser when I start a windows session anyway.

Thanks again for your assistance

That applies to server.

With respect, YOU sorted it out. All I had to do was follow your excellent instructions.
