Subtitle download not working

I've just migrated from Windows to a Synology NAS for my setup and the
only thing I can't get to work in my setup is subtitle download.

I've setup all the subtitle plugins, and automatic subtitle downloading,
but there is just no results at all.

I've seen this before - check the NAS itself has access to the open subtitle site.

Inside the logs, you will likely find 'errors' relating to 'access errors to the site'.

Its' also worth doing a search on this in the synology forum, as I can't remember the fix !

thanks for the quick reply,.
How do i test if the NAS has access to the opensubtitles?
Which logs, and how do i access those logs?, emby's or the NAS?

Thanks for the help

Emby Menu > Advanced > Logs - you want the embyserver.txt one.  It might be large, so your best bet is to go to scheduled tasks > application > rotate log.  Then try the subtitle download again - and it should hopefully be in the log.  Post that log and we should be able to see if it's getting access denied to api.opensubtitles.org

Ok.
an error from Addic7ed
then an error from opensubtitles

Connection refused.. so how do i go about changing that?

embyserver.txt

Ah so that is connection refused (ie access is ok, unless the error log is very misleading..) - have you verified your opensubtitles password in the opensubtitle website directly ?

yes,  i can log in with the password.

One thing (maybe unimportant) is that when i put it in in emby, and save,
then the password "dots" become longer when i go back to the open subtitles settings.

That's normal with the dots.

Are you going through a VPN or proxy server?

Ok,  nope no VPN, and im not sure about proxy server. I had to port forward the emby port in my router.

Are there any web filters on the synology ?  opensubtitles is often flagged as a 'non productive' site and could be getting blocked somehow.

Also - do a search in the synology emby forum - I'm positive I've seen this before on a synology and it was 'network' related.  ie the synology was blocking access, thus emby could not get to it.

I presume meta-data access is ok - ie you can get to the likes of tmdb and thetvdb ?

I am in denmark (also a problem for this user):

You can login to the site - so I don't think you are being geo blocked...

in this question it was resolved by setting the checkbox "set group, own and permissions recursively"

Is that an emby setting or some Synology setting?

Posted

no that's local permissions on the synology - let me do a quick search myself - I don't want to mislead you if the answer is not there .. ;)

Grrrr 😬 can't find the thread now.

ok - so do you have any form of 'console' access on the synology ?  Sorry, I don't own one so I'm not sure here.

If you do - then hopefully it has 'curl' - in which case you should be able to query the api website directly FROM the synology

ie

curl https://api.opensubtitles.org/xml-rpc

If it replies - then access to the site from the synology is not a problem.

@cayars - Can you remember the previous synology opensubtitles issue - lol ?

If you're not a VIP donator to opensubtitles you get throttled to so many downloads per 24 hours.

You also get ads in the subtitles, a bit off-topic I know…

I can use putty to run commands on the synology.

curl like this?

try the API

I get -

curl https://api.opensubtitles.org/xml-rpc
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><methodResponse><params><param><value><struct><member><name>status</name><value><string>parse error. not well formed</string></value></member><member><name>seconds</name><value><double>0.001</double></value></member></struct></value></param></params></methodResponse>

It's junk - but it's a response.

443 is port forwarded

this is an outgoing request - you should not be port forwarding https outgoing .. maybe check your port forwarding rules ;)

tried removing the port forward,  subtitle seach on video station does not work either

I think it's an issue on opensubtitles - if you try a 'curl' to any other website (curl https://emby.media) - if you get a response back, then your synology (and thus emby) is getting external access ok.
