Single album option

Maybe I just missed something, but would it be possible under 'Albums' to show each album only once, not once for each artist. The picture shows "100 Solid Gold hits", a five disc album. Each song is by a different artist, so this album appears 100 times when really it would be better if it only showed only once. Can 'Albums' perhaps be 'Grouped by' album name?

Hi, songs will be grouped into an album based on their embedded metadata. They all need to have the same album tag as well as the same albumartist tag. If they have different artists, they can each have their own separate artists tag.

If you correct this in your audio files, then run a library scan, Emby Server will pick up the changes and group them into an album. A tool such as Picard can easily help you do this. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

If I change these tags, will they still show correctly for the artist when searching under artists?

I don't understand why when I click on "Albums", it groups by anything other than the album name - it doesn't need to then sub group by artist as well. The only thing I expect to see when I click on "Albums" is the album cover and album name.

When I click on "Album Artists" I would expect to see an album breakdown perhaps. When I click on "Artists" I can drill down to see the albums that artist is in.

When I select "Albums", I should be seeing virtually, what I would see if I were to look on the cd shelf.

Sorry to be pedantic about this, I am well aware of the effort that goes into creating a product such as Emby and the extra effort you go to answering these posts and obviously you can't please everybody!

I guess too, I should be able to click on the album and play the whole album, not just one song.

As Luke mentioned with Emby being tag driven not folder structure, so to group the album into a single item the tracks need same Album and Album Artist or MusicBrainsAlbumid.

Looking at the screenshot I suspect the Album Artist field is blank.  To me technically the AA is "Various Artists".

You currently don't have a album with more then one song as Album and Artist equal individual tracks.

Yes you need the Album Artist to be the same. On Samplers this would be "Various Artists" this is missing on yours. Just add it, and rescan the music library, this will fix it.

Hi.  If we did that, every "Greatest Hits" album ever made would show as one.

This is why there are both "AlbumArtist" and "Artist" tags.  If you make the suggested change, it should work as you wish.

Thanks.

You will be able to, as soon as the songs are grouped together using the methods that we've mentioned. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

If I were designing a similar program, I would create a number generator, add an internal album field ID seperate of all other fields and group by that. Songs would likewise link back to this ID field (Standard SQL stuff really, but for a file).  It seems rather clumsy, if not certainly ineffiecient, grouping by tags.

I don't really have the time or inclination to go adjusting the tags myself for every album I have. Every Various Artists album would need to be adjusted as well as any other album that has a guest artist doing a duet with the main artist.

But hey, horses for courses! Not every program will suit every user.

Hi, we do have that kind of internal album id number, but what we're trying to tell you is that there is no way for Emby Server to know that those songs should be given the same album id.

We can guess, and play the percentages that most of the time it will be OK, but then we'll just be troubleshooting with another audience who will report what ebr said:

If you're on Windows, try importing these tracks into Windows Media Player and you'll see it acts the same way. or iTunes on MacOS. It is the most commonly used convention to use the album and albumartist tags to create albums.

Hi Luke,

I appreciate the advice from you and others. I really don't have time to go adjusting the tags for an endless amount of albums. In any case, until the issue of only being able to play one song at a time is sorted, I won't be spending any more time on it.

What I can do though is play the album from the 'Folders' section by drilling down Artist-Album. Now I just have to work out how to play all files in a folder (like in VLC).... long clicking a folder for this option does not work - must be an option somewhere!

With a tool such as Picard or m3utag you can adjust your tags pretty quickly.

Once done you'll find things work very well in Emby.

Correct folder view will present your folder structure where all other tabs are dependent on your embedded tags.

I'll look into it when I get time.

This is a multi-artist album with 100 tracks that I just added.
The only way to get the library organized is to organize the tags. This 100-track album didn't take more than 5 seconds to perfect using Picard.

I have had a look at MusicBrainz's Picard and worked out how to use it to adjust the AlbumArtist tag. Yes it is quick to do a single album, but I must have several hundred to go through - I'll have my work cut out for me for a while!

I use Exact Audio Copy (EAC) to rip my CD's. It turned out that the ALBUMARTIST variable was pointing to %albuminterpret%, which is the 'CD Performer' field which I never bother to populate. I changed this to %albumartist% which is the 'CD Artist' field which I ensure is always correct as this is used for the directory naming convention that I use. Now future albums will have their "Album Artist" tags set as per my requirements.

My thanks to all that contributed comments to this post.

Not wanting to do go through MusicBrainz's Picard one artist at a time and not really wanting to learn how to batch tag in Mp3tag, I wrote some C# code to do it all for me.

Using the Nuget package TagLibSharp, I wrote this little routine. It's a bit rough and ready, but worked for my purposes (plus I only need to run it once). For the programmers out there, feel free to copy and use as desired. Obviously, test any implementation on a test series of files before committing to the whole library. This took about an hour to run.

        // Music folders..
        // D:\<Library>\<Artist>\[...\...\...]\<file>.flac
        // The artist folders to be imediately beneath the the library folder.

        // TagLibSharp
        // https://www.nuget.org/packages/TagLibSharp/2.2.0

        private void AlbumArtistButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            albumArtistButton.Enabled = false;

            List<string> musicFolderLibraries = new List<string>()
            {
                @"C:\Media\CD\Albums\One",
                @"D:\Media\two",
                @"F:\Three",
            };

            // Cycle all libraries
            foreach (string library in musicFolderLibraries)
            {
                // Cycle through artist folders
                foreach (string dir in Directory.GetDirectories(library))
                    ConvertFlacFile(dir, Path.GetFileName(dir.TrimEnd('\\')));
            }

            albumArtistButton.Enabled = true;
        }

        private void ConvertFlacFile(string directory, string artist)
        {
            // Look for flac files
            foreach (string file in Directory.GetFiles(directory, "*.flac"))
            {
                try
                {
                    // Update 'albumartist' field
                    TagLib.File tfile = TagLib.File.Create(file);
                    tfile.Tag.AlbumArtists = new string[] { artist };
                    tfile.Save();
                }
                catch (Exception e)
                {
                    MessageBox.Show("There was a problem with:\n\nArtist:\n" + artist +"\n\nFile:\n" + file + "\n\nPath:\n" + directory);
                }
            }

            // Chech all sub-directories
            foreach (string dir in Directory.GetDirectories(directory))
                ConvertFlacFile(dir, artist);
        }
