octo13er 2 Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 As subject suggests, I’m having trouble on multiple apps across different devices. I have a Google TV device and a Sony “android” TV with emby installed. At first everything seemed to work fine, and now for some reason every time I try to log in the app freezes and eventually crashes. I’ve pressed the button to send the logs. My emby server is connected via vpn and it’s worked flawlessly before. I’ve cleared the caches, uninstalled/reinstalled the Apps. Tried to run the server without the vpn, and same issue. I’m here for advice! Thank you!
Carlo 4561 Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Hi, are these TVs on the same LAN as the server?
octo13er 2 Posted September 5, 2021 Author Posted September 5, 2021 Hi, no they’re connecting remotely to my emby server at another location. It would be ideal to have it on LAN but unfortunately for now that’s not possible.
Carlo 4561 Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 How are you establishing the VPN connection?
octo13er 2 Posted September 5, 2021 Author Posted September 5, 2021 TorGuard. Their support is fantastic and had me troubleshoot my connection because initially my xfinity router couldn’t (for some reason) open the proper ports for emby to work. VPN is the workaround for me. Torguard gave me a ip with the open ports. I can connect to it just fine via web. And my iOS app on my phone works. It’s just the apps on the TVs that have issues.
Carlo 4561 Posted September 6, 2021 Posted September 6, 2021 OK so this isn't a point to point VPN but a public VPN where you use the VPN server IP and port. Is there a reason you need to run this on the server side? VPNs can cause strange issues and normally the only reason to use it on the server side is to punch through a NAT situation. Beyond NAT or wanting to hide content from the server's ISP it's not doing anything for you security wise and can often be worse because a lot of people scan/target public VPN IPs and ISP are starting to throttle these IPs more and more as well.

Can you please provide the information requested when you do that? Quote Then add the following information to your report in the forum: Exactly what you were doing and what happened. Include the name of whatever you played if it is a playback problem The time you sent the log (in Eastern Time please - UTC -5) The name of the Emby user on the local server that was logged in at the time

I fully understand. I wouldn’t have to use my VPN if my isp would just open the port for my server. I’ve tried a number of ways to connect and using the VPN to change my IP was the only solution to get my server to connect remotely. The only option I haven’t tried is fully swapping my ISP modem to use another device, however my family still uses lan lines and the modem I need is kinda special to fit their needs. I appreciate your information! The more options I can try the better, but for now I’m stuck.

I used “emby connect” to try to log in, and I’ve also tried manually connecting to the IP. Both ways have froze the app and crashed it on multiple devices. The time you sent the log (in Eastern Time please - UTC -5) eastern time The name of the Emby user on the local server that was logged in at the time SATURN is my emby server name. thank you for your interest in this !
ebr 16184 Posted September 6, 2021 Posted September 6, 2021 Hi. What time (Eastern) did you send the log?
ebr 16184 Posted September 6, 2021 Posted September 6, 2021 Hi. I think I may have found your log. If so, it appears that your VPN (or something else) is mucking with the response stream from the server. It is an invalid structure and the deserializer we are using is crashing trying to interpret it.

Because I can connect on chrome or Firefox just fine. And would you recommend me trying anything else before I try working on my connection with my ISP with your diagnosis? I really appreciate the help on this thread thank you guys. 1
ebr 16184 Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 If something is installed on the actual device for the VPN, then it could be that component.
Luke 42078 Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 Hi, can you try side loading our standard Android app on the same device and see how that compares? https://emby.media/emby-for-android.html Thanks.
