Intel Core I7 970 - is it still good for Emby?

Hello

while looking for an affordable dedi, I’m thinking getting one with a Intel I7 Core 970 CPU. So this is 10 years old, but has 6 cores @ 3,2 GHZ.
I do not transcode at all.
What do you think how this old cpu will work with Emby?

If you do not transcode, then pretty much anything will run emby - even an entry level i3 will run it just fine.

Power consumption on the 970 will be high, so personally, unless you need 6/12 cores/threads, I would opt for a much more power efficient 2-3 year old CPU (intel or AMD)

btw - my core system still runs 24x7 on an i5 750 (4 core/4 thread) and it's perfectly fine (but no transcoding of anything above 1080p - or it kills it..)

as this is a  dedicated server I do not really care about power consumption 🙂

So tasks like libary refresh, fetching metadata, fetching live tv guide etc. do not focus on cpu mainly? If I'm doing some of these tasks with my current dedi I see lots of cpu being used with htop/nmon so I'm wondering...

Anybody?

What other info are you asking for ?  Yes the 970 will run emby very well, but so will an Pentium G5600 at a fraction of the power usage/heat.  The 970 is also going to need an LGA 1366 board, Tri channel memory etc.  If you want to potentially do transcoding, then an iGPU on a modern intel chip will destroy the 970 regardless of it having 6 cores/12 threads.

My personal advise is there are much better options out there.  It was great 10 years ago - it's not anymore .. :)

Is this a computer you already have or will get dirt cheap?

If not go with a more modern Intel CPU that has QuickSync built in.

Dedicated as in rented from a hosting company? I guess you gotta ask yourself if you want to do business with a company that keeps such relics around. And what happens when it breaks, do they upgrade you to a better one if they can't find parts?

Then again if it's dirt cheap why not? Processing capacity is comparable to 8-9th i3 but no graphics.

yes and that's why the rental fees are very cheap.

Basically what I want to know is this:
On my current dedicated server which runs an Intel J1900 cpu (https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/78867/intel-celeron-processor-j1900-2m-cache-up-to-2-42-ghz.html) , I'm seeing the cpu being used very much if I do tasks like libary libary refresh, fetching metadata, fetching live tv guide etc. So i'm wondering how that CPU will compare or rather whether I'll see a performance gain or loss.
That company is a big one here in Germany, this dedi is part of there sales offer for people who look for cheap ones. If it breaks some day okay, I'll have backups.

Again this is a dedicated server, so I pay for it each month and it is not at my home 🙂

That CPU will work.  But once you move your server out of your house to a dedicated server hosted by someone else you need to consider other factors such as storage.

Where are you going to store all your media?

Benchmark for the i7-970 is around 6x the j1900. Single thread is around 2x. It has more headroom so should be faster and less busy overall.

Not to mention the remote connection to the server...
