TCL P715 tv - Emby transcodes all audio even though Native player can

Hi I was about to purchase the emby android tv app when i noticed my receiver is constantly stuck on dolby digital. Looking at the stats for nerds page i noticed the audio was being transcoded by the emby player.

Using the native tcl media player, it works-where i can select dts audio (REMUX) and it passes through DTS to my integra 70.4 receiver. The only downside is the native media player does not have seek functionality if used with emby server (external player option). The workaround is to put into a usb and directly connect it to the tv.

The tcl media player seems to have exclusive access to the dolby codecs on the tv as i cant get netflix to play dolby dd+ either. If i stream to chromecast on the tv i cannot get dd+ on the receiver, however if i stream to the chromecast attached to my AVR there is DD+

Is there a way emby can get forcibly use the codecs on the tv to straight decode or pass through to the AVR? seems like emby app thinks that the tv cannot handle the codec and is not aware that my avr is hooked up to the tv with pass through enabled.

Thanks

As a test have you tried turning off transcoding on Emby server for that user?  That should force a passthrough

If that is the case, I'm not sure if there will be anything we can do.  You can test forcing it as Frostbyte suggested but I'm not hopeful.  Please let us know what you find.

Also, if you can post one of the ffmpeg logs just so we can confirm exactly what is going on.

Thanks.

Not sure how to do this is it under transcode and drop down list = No? i thought transcode was only for video and only if you had premiere access?

Go to server settings, users, select user, go to media playback section, disable allow video playback that requires transcoding.

The first one circled will stop transcoding video, the second will stop remuxing because of unsupported audio, etc.

will work on sending the log. i tried what Frostbyte suggested and no luck - the player still software decodes the audio.

I have read that it is potentially an EDID issue where the software thinks the tv is only 2 channel and therefore decodes it. on the Nvidia forums they run into that issue as well if the PC is connected directly to the tv. What they needed to do was hack a driver file to force tell the graphics card that the tv is capable of 5.1.

Note: i force the tv on pass through mode rather than auto and my avr will show 2 channel direct. If i then play a netflix or disney + file it changes to Dolby D (but still not Dolby D+)

If it's the client converting the audio then there probably isn't a ffmpeg log which are only created when the server converts the file

So turning off transcode doesnt work. i think it is either down to permissions that the native player has vs what the emby player has access to or that the emby app sees the tv as 2 channel audio instead of knowing that there is pass through to an AVR.

Hi.  If you can send the app log, we can confirm that.  Thanks.

i have also sent via the app from my tv

Hi.  Can you please provide the information requested in the instructions for doing that?

  • Exactly what you were doing and what happened.  Include the name of whatever you played if it is a playback problem
  • -playing file normally (video directly plays but audio is on software decode-not direct) Cruella.2021.2160p.BluRay.REMUX.HEVC.DTS-HD.MA.TrueHD.7.1.Atmos-FGT
  • The time you sent the log (in Eastern Time please - UTC -5)
  • 22:33 28th august 2021
  • The name of the Emby user on the local server that was logged in at the time
  • Emby user chung

Hi.  It looks like those are DTS-HD and TrueHD tracks and your TV does not support those.

Yes that is corect -but it should be able to pass through? which is what the tv is setting on. Using the tv's the native player, it successfully passes through DTS to my receiver but i think emby player cannot see the receiver being able to decode DTS. Either that or Emby doesnt have the same permissions as the native player to "passthrough"

Also the 5.1 tracks on DD also gets transcoded by emby rather than being passed through... it seems strange the native player works but the emby app player doesnt.

Hi.  The native player is most likely not running in the Android system.  However, your tracks are not just DTS, they are DTS-HD.  Still I don't think the Android system is reporting support for any flavor of DTS.  Are there any options for DTS in the playback settings in the app?

The native android tv 9 player com.tcl.videoplayer is able to pass though all audio to my avr all DTS and True HD. Unfortunately it appears the emby app isnt able to do so. Kodi v19 matrix seems to be able to pass through dolby audio but not DTS( as they seem to have removed that setting in v19)

Yes there is an ability to play the DTS track and pass through it. ie you can select what track to play natively. now TrueHD i can choose to play/ pass through but my AVR doesnt support so no sound comes out. But for DTS it works.

So, you do see the DTS options in the app settings and, if you select them, the DTS audio works?
