Trying to mount external hard drive.

Hello all,

I have been going through posts where users are trying to mount and external hard drive to view external videos within emby.

I presently have emby server running on Ubuntu 20.04 and I want to mount an external hard drive to scan that library but am having difficulties.

Below is what i get from lsblk

I also tried to modify the fstab and that did not work. Maybe I doing something wrong :)

any feedback would be appreciated

TIA

Greg

hard to give feedback without knowing what problem you're experiencing.  looks like it's mounted to me so what issues are you facing?

My guess would be that Emby isn't able to see the drive, and that would be due to improper permissions.  Make sure that the Emby user has access to the drive and any media directories within it.

I spent a couple days myself trying to figure it out reading all these Linux file permission posts. Some recommend putting permissions to be owned by Emby user and Emby group. I believe that's totally wrong. It should be the user and the group of your user. This allows not only Emby server to access it but all programs to function correctly. Doesn't require recursive chmod permissions or anything is the sort.

My post is related to veracrypt under Linux mint 20.2 but think it applies. You only need to do the sudo mount command. Probably dismount it first though.

The Emby user must have access to the files and folders.  The Emby user is what the program runs under.

To test if the Emby user can get to the files and folders you can switch to the Emby user with…

     sudo -u emby /bin/bash

Then attempt to “cd” to the location, and if makes it there do an “ls” to see if you can see the files.

If it is a permanent mount I would use facls to allow the Emby user permission into the required location and set any write permissions (if needed for recordings).
