Genre display and Latest Music display issues after 4.6.4.0 upgrade

I use Emby only for music.  After upgrading from 4.4.3.0 to 4.6.4.0, genres are no longer indexed, and Latest Music displays individual tracks instead of albums.

Going to try to include as much background as I can here.

Server is Debian 11 Bullseye.  Files are on a remote nfs network share, mounted locally to /home/[my_username]/Music in fstab.

File storage structure is Artist/Album/Track, like so:

Each music file contains seven metadata frames in an id3v2 tag, as in this example:

1543141630_Screenshotat2021-08-1212-21-28.png.508df298c148ce83696c53977819c32c.png

4.4.3.0 had indexed Genre by the contents of the TCON frame (in this case, Jazz).  In 4.6.4.0, the Genres page is empty.

Additionally, in 4.4.3.0, if I added an album to the collection, I'd see that album pop up in Latest Music.  In 4.6.4.0, every individual track on the album is shown individually under Latest Music.

I've reverted to 4.4.3.0 for the time being.  Is this just how Emby is now?  Or is there something I can do to fix these apparent regressions?

Hi, did you complete a full library scan following the update?

I didn't do anything to force one, if that's what you mean.  Doesn't it happen by itself?

Unless you deleted the scheduled task it will run every 12 hour.

Can you post the what ffprobe sees on a track as that is what Emby uses to read the embedded metadata.

No luck with that:

/opt/emby-server/bin/ffprobe: error while loading shared libraries: libavdevice.so.58: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

That library does exist, though.  It's in /opt/emby-server/lib, but nonetheless ffprobe can't find it even if I'm in that very directory when I run it:

A library rescan from the web interface works, though.  So perhaps it's a paths issue.

Bear in mind that I've reverted to 4.4.3.0.  Can't picture that being a problem unless ffprobe is a new thing since then, otherwise the rescan would fail, right?

@dwasifar

4.6 is tag driven so there is obviously a reading of embedded tags issue as it is done by ffprobe.

But you obviously have a issue as your should not be receiving that error since ffprobe is packed in Emby.

Not a Linus guy so may need assistance from some one else.

Can you post or pm a server log as I would expect to see this error a lot if you entered the command correctly.

I installed ffmpeg on another machine, so as not to interfere with emby's installation, and got ffprobe output there:

Looks like the same metadata shown in my earlier screenshot.

Looks fine so to me you have a issue with your installation if you can not get Emby ffprobe to function for this command.

Yeah, I've just discovered that since the rescan, nothing will play.  Looks like it did not like being reverted to an earlier version.

Fortunately I have Emby on its own machine, so it's trivial to wipe and rebuild.

Thanks for the assist.  Will check back in later after I've reinstalled.

Well, I reinstalled everything from bare metal, and things are working right now with 4.4.3.0, so I'm going with if-it-ain't-broke for a while.

Thanks for the assist.  :D

But you will have client issues eventually as they are built/updated to the current server version.

If everything is currently working for your needs that is all that really matters.

Yeah, that's why I upgraded in the first place.  At least now I know what to expect.

Do you have any logs from 4.6.4.0?

Nope.  Wiped the disk and reinstalled.  I'll watch the logs next time around though.

Actually, now that I think of it, my other question kind of fell off the scope.  Is it now normal for "Latest Music" to display individual tracks rather than albums?  Or is that configurable somewhere?

Sorry I don't follow as Latest Music shows Albums for me.  Can you show an example.

I'll have to load up another box with the latest version.  Probably not a bad idea to do it that way rather than risk messing things up with another upgrade on the working one.

If it's not too much trouble, if you could show us an example that would really help us help you. Thanks.

Okay.  I have a new box with 4.6.4.0 running, and everything looks as expected.  I think I see what happened here.  Here is the sequence of events.

For the Genres: I upgraded 4.4.3.0 to 4.6.4.0 and either it broke ffprobe or I was impatient, because Genres were not populating.  I think it was actually broken.  After reverting, ffprobe was definitely broken, and nothing was playing.  So at some point during either the upgrade or the reversion, things got out of sync, and I needed a reinstall to fix it.  Since Emby is the only service this machine exists for, and it only takes about 10 minutes to do a fresh OS install of Debian, it was surer just to start over.  I did that, reinstalled 4.4.3.0, and everything was back to normal.

For the Latest Music display thing: That was impatience.  I set up a second machine with 4.6.4.0 and let it scan.  At first the Latest Music populated with individual tracks from the latest-added albums; but when I went back to it later after it had time to finish its scan, it was displaying the albums, not the individual tracks.  And the Genres are fine too.

So: all solved.  Thanks for the assist, folks.  :D
