Change image when there is existing one deletes original

I have configured Emby to use its own storage for images etc. Emby server does not have write access in the media folders since it should not be needed. I recently noticed that some movies had low resolution poster images and when I tried to change them in the web GUI or android app it would not work. I finally spent some time troubleshooting why. It turns out that some releases ships with a low res .jpg of the poster of the movie. Emby then decides to use that file instead of downloading its own. This I understand and seems fine. The problem is when I try to change the image manually. Then emby tries to delete the original .jpg before downloading the new file which causes an error in the logs and the new image is never downloaded.

In my opinion if I have unchecked the "Save artwork into media folders" then Emby should not need to delete that image at all before downloading its own, since that file will be saved in another location anyways. It seems everything else in Emby is working fine without write access in media folders (which is fantastic) so it would be great if this could be changed.

I am using the latest version of the docker container.

Local images will always take priority (no way to disable this), so if you choose not to save images with media the local image has to go in order for central image to used.

Yes, well, thats my point. I think that Emby should never delete files that it does not itself download. This whole thing is actually a good example of why I dont let apps have write access to my data unless its absolutely neccesary. If I dont use media folder it should not mess with the media folder, basically.

My suggestion would be a toggle in the advanced settings for a library: "Don't use media folder images" or something. Should I perhaps just post that in the feature request section instead?

Yes

But I still don't understand the point of having images with media if you don't like them.  Seems like just wasted space.

They are part of the torrent, not something I manually put there. I woild have to go through all my folders manually and remove them. And continue doing so manually going forward. Or live with blurry ugly images.

That is the grey area of the media source.  All you can do is request the feature as there is a option to read or not read existing nfo files.
