Dizzy49 99 Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 I just got my Steam Deck OLED and I am wondering how things are looking with Emby. My biggest question is can I download things onto it via Emby? I know the downloading in general is problematic, but I have worked around it for the most part. I would love to be able to JUST take my work laptop and Steam Deck when I travel. The screen is perfect for viewing movies
Luke 42077 Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Hi, the download feature works just fine however we don’t actually have a Steam app so you’ll be limited to manual web app downloads.
Mkilbride 86 Posted December 8, 2023 Author Posted December 8, 2023 Perhaps a Steam app would be a good idea. 1

Which is not very useful when I want to use it on a plane with no internet.
Dizzy49 99 Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 Well it IS useful to connect to my hotel TV so I can free up my laptop for work. Does anyone have a working controller setup?
handspiker2 6 Posted October 26, 2024 Posted October 26, 2024 Is there any updates on getting a official version? Or has anyone gotten the controllers buttons working? The flatpak seems to be touch screen only for me.

Basically you can choose "Web Browser" and change it from there. It should work because controller is simulating keyboard here. I think my defaults were: Left Thumbstick - arrow keys A - space (or Enter) B - ESC (or BckSP?) DPAD - left/right = RW/FF up/down = volume up/down and some others, basically was able to set it up so that I do not have to touch screen if I don't want to.

From Wikipedia: Steam Deck runs SteamOS version 3, based on the Arch Linux operating system. While SteamOS had been previously developed for Steam Machines using Debian Linux, Valve stated that they wanted to use a rolling upgrade approach for the Deck's system software, a function Debian was not designed for, but which is a characteristic of Arch Linux. Did you manage to install it and run movies? I was able to install Emby Theater on OLED, but it doesn't play movies (stuck on hourglass wheel). In comparison, the LCD one that I have still works.
KnightNZ 3 Posted June 11, 2025 Posted June 11, 2025 How would I go about trying this version on my SteamOS device?
Caliber 0 Posted November 7, 2025 Posted November 7, 2025 I'm trying this lol I have no idea what I'm doing but I will let you know how I make out. I'm installing steamOS then I will install emby server from a terminal and plug an external hard drive in and see if I can get emby to find it to add my movies. Lets see how bad I can Fu.k this up lol, will report back on how I do.
JackBowman 35 Posted November 8, 2025 Posted November 8, 2025 I have been using Emby VIA Steam for quite some time now. I can access it through Bigscreen or Virtual Desktop Via the desktop view option. You have to have to use the web client or a client that is compatible and installed on your Emby Server. This allows for full use of your controllers to run the interface. Works great!
njiska 8 Posted December 1, 2025 Posted December 1, 2025 With Steam Machines coming in the new year, this might finally be a good replacement for Nvidia Shields as a set-top device. Emby available within Steam would be ideal, but a Linux version that works and works from Game mode would be extremely desirable. 2 1
Quincarter 0 Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) probably not what everyone wants to hear, but use chrome, install the instance of your media server as an app (PWA mode), then add that to steam (you can right click on it in steamOS or bazzite and add to steam, or if you are on windows, you can add it as a non steam game pretty easily from the desktop menus). Once you add it to steam, it'll open up and everything full screen. In settings, Emby Web Preferences, General, you set the TV Mode toggle to on. You can then map the controller to the keyboard commands to move around. I have done this successfully in my bazzite couch rig and it works pretty great. The only thing i cannot figure out is how to make it prevent sleep when the app is in use. Edited January 23 by Quincarter
