Simple way to move to DSM7

Hi all, I appreciate there has been a lot of threads and effort by people to explain how to do this, but it's just not simple enough. I don't want to be going in via SSH and messing around. I simply do not understand it well enough. People like me use Emby as its so simple, and a lot of us do not have the knowledge most seem to have on here. Even the basic instructions like "don't forget to change custom cache, temp sync folder etc" mean nothing to me!

Plex was really simple, will the Emby upgrade path be made easier at some point too? I want to upgrade to DSM7, but not if I'm likely going to screw it up and lose my current Emby install.

Hi, unfortunately because of the way DSM 7 is implemented and it's new security model we can't do the migration for you during install so the instructions provided in this thread are about as simple as it will get.  There is even a video you can watch and follow along with.  I'm not sure how we can make it any simpler at this point.

With that said, if these instructions are beyond your level or comfort we can assist you with a remote session and remotely do most of the migration for you while explaining the steps and showing you how to set permissions for Shares under DSM 7.

Really appreciate the response, and the fact you didn’t just dismiss it! If there are limitations due to Synology, then I understand. I’ll watch the video you’ve kindly shared a few times, and may take the plunge….

If you give this try and get stuck, hit a snag or anything like that, install AnyDesk (www.anydesk.com) on your PC and then send me a PM and I'll jump on with you to give you a hand. I can do this in my sleep at this point. LOL

But once you get going, it's not as hard as it may seem. Each step is easy to do, but there just happens to be many steps.

We are here to help, so don't be afraid to ask for assistance if needed.

I followed the video and instructions - to the letter! And when I open Emby I have no users or libraries set up? Any ideas?

Also, the only user is now 'emby'

Actually, I missed this last part: 

- add emby user and emby group to your shared media folder in Synology 

What do you do for that?

Issue resolved, not sure what I did wrong but @cayars performed a remote session and got me up and running again.

Unfortunately I removed Emby after upgrading to DSM 7. 

Is there still a way to install Emby Server?

Yes you can absolutely install the new version on DSM 7 but you won't be able to move you old system over as it doesn't exist any more.

You can however recreate your users and libs and everything will be fine.
