Question about file system permissions

Ideally the emby runtime user should have full access to the media. This is what happens when it doesn't...it's not Emby that's broken.

The thread below has good info, read through it - don't skip to the solution.

so according to this, i did do it right:

have crossfire (me as the main user) being the owner...
and have emby (the group) as group access...

so why was i told i didnt do it right? and that i needed to chage it to samba instead of FTP (when i needed FTP)?

If you're going to rely on group level access for emby you have to make sure it has write permissions where needed. Group ownership by itself is not enough. This is how Linux permissions work.

So whether it's ftp or SMB you need to make sure that new directories and files have the correct access at creation.

You can add user emby to the crossfire group and add crossfire to the emby group. This is part of the solution. Then make sure emby can write to the directories you want via group or user permissions.

exactly, and that is how it is all set with group

crossfire owns the folders, and part of the FTP read/write/execute permissions

Emby group allowed read write execute permissions

all works perfect now that i did the crossfire:emby moding

after reading your link, i think so! seems i was being "scolded" for doing things right?

unless you disagree with how i did it?

only thing left would be to try to get spectrum streaming into emby, then again plutu.tv would be nice also!

If it's working you should be fine. Just keep an eye on the ownership and permissions of new directories and files. Then you'll know for sure.
