Multiple versions of video using one subtitles

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a question about reading subtitles. I know that the subtitles and video should be the same name from now on. And if I  have 4K and 1080p version of the same video in one floder , maybe it could be used one subtitle. Just make the emby read the subtitle'name ignore the keywords like1080p 2160p...

Hi.  There really isn't any way for the system to know what is the "name" and what are "keywords".  Especially, when you consider that you can have multiple videos in the same folder.

We could just use all subtitles in the folder. The problem is we don't know if every single file will be in sync with all of the different versions or not

So if I have two movies like "Godfather.1972.1080p.mkv" and "Godfather.1972.2160p.mkv" and the subtitle was "Godfather.1972.srt" . It's really isn't anyway to make both movies read the subtitle in emby?

How is the system supposed to know where the "title" ends, and the "other stuff" begins?  Perhaps there could be some way but it would undoubtedly impact our identification abilities when there are multiple movies in the same folder.

Fine, thank you  for the answering.

As someone who is ignorant with how this stuff actually works, I’m a little confused about some things.

I thought Emby already has that ability to differentiate between media titles and subsequent keywords. Assuming the file name is following the recommended convention that is.

For example, if I have a folder with:

The Godfather - 1080p.mkv

The Godfather - 4K.mkv

Then on the server I’ll have a choice between “1080p and 4K”. In fact, I can put anything after the “- “ and it seems to only display that in the dropdown.

Also, I’ve had similar subtitle problems as the OP in the past. I have separate folders for all 1080 Blu-ray rips and another for 4K rips in order to only allow myself access to the 4K folder. As they are in the same library however, I group the two versions together.

Grouping them usually creates wonky effects if one of them has an srt file (The Godfather - 1080p.srt) and the other doesn’t. Accessing the media details page on various devices shows that the subtitles attach to only one of the two versions randomly. If you switch the dropdown to the other version, the subtitles are gone. Sometimes they’re attached to the 4K version (despite none in the folder) and sometimes the 1080p.

The easy solution for me was to just copy the srt files to the new 4K versions so they each have their own. But I just thought it was worth pointing out.

That is a very specific naming convention for muti-version items.  We could possibly use that same type of thing for the subs but, as Luke pointed out, this could cause more problems than it solves with incompatible subs being available for some versions and also what looks like duplicate subs potentially.

Also maybe useful to note that what appears in the drop down isn’t what appears after the -. It’s actually the text after and including the first character that differs in the file names. So if you had

the godfather - the directors cut

the godfather - theatrical cut

you would see

 directors cut

and

atrical cut

in the drop down

I hope they fix that soon.  It didn't always do that :(

That's only because of a glitch, though.

And yeah, in cases of multi-versioning it makes sense to put anything that has just the name of the film down as available for all versions. If subs are incompatible with one version in particular, they can still be named as they are now.
