OnyxUK 84 Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 (edited) Hey, Just a quick question of VVC Codec (H.266) to see if this will be support by emby once they have released it fully to the public. VVC was released at the end of 2020 for testing on OTT companies etc and hopefully should be releasing it to the public domain fairly soon. of course there soon may be 2 years but would just like to ask if its something that is possible. EDIT : If you would also like to have this improvement/feature please give a like on this post so that the devs can see how much/little demand it currently has Thanks guys Edited August 12, 2021 by ONYX MEDIA edit to message 1 5
Luke 42077 Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 Hi, yes if it gains traction and popularity then I'm sure we'll end up supporting it. 2
denysfontaine 0 Posted January 7, 2025 Posted January 7, 2025 Now you can use FFMEPG 7.1 to encode / decode vvc1 ffmeg -i input.mp4 -c:v vvc testvvc.mp4 Media Player Classic now decode vvc1
BillOatman 596 Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 Today, does Emby support H.266 (libvvenc in ffmpeg speak) video codec? If so, do all Emby clients?

Hi, to be honest, I'm not sure it's been tested, but if livvenc happens to be in our ffmpeg build, then there's a chance it will just work. If it isn't, then we can look at adding it in our next ffmpeg update. 1
denysfontaine 0 Posted June 4, 2025 Posted June 4, 2025 Still does not work in my side. With or without hardware encoding/decoding Device : 3rd gen fire TV Cube Server cpu : 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700 2.10 GHz Here are some logs : ffmpeg version 5.1-emby_2023_06_25_p4 Copyright (c) 2000-2022 the FFmpeg developers and softworkz for Emby LLC Stream #0:0[0x1](und): Video: none (vvc1 / 0x31637676), none(tv, bt709, progressive), 1920x1080, 612 kb/s, SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 30 fps, 30 tbr, 15360 tbn, Start-Time 1.033s (default) Stream #0:0 (?) -> scale:default (graph 0) Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (aac (native) -> aac (native)) Decoder (codec none) not found for input stream #0:0 FFmpeg emby-version seems not to be up-to-date. The latest release is 7.1.1 and support encode / decode of vvc1 (h.266) codec. Heeellllpppp :) Thanks
BillOatman 596 Posted June 4, 2025 Posted June 4, 2025 @denysfontaine FFmpeg officially supports H.266/VVC encoding via libvvenc starting from version 7.1, with integration added on June 15, 2024. @Luke I do not see any indication in the Emby ffmpeg as to what version of ffmpeg it was based on. Was it before or after version 7.1, June 15, 2024 of ffmpeg?

JerryPenguin 3 Posted December 25, 2025 Posted December 25, 2025 Hello, Is there any news on when we will be able to play H.266-encoded movies directly on Android? Best regards

Intel's Lunar Lake-line has h266-hardware-decoding support. They were launched in Q3'24, so i guess we are "there" now and support will grow steadily. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/240954/intel-core-ultra-7-processor-256v-12m-cache-up-to-4-80-ghz/specifications.html Edited December 27, 2025 by Suliamu

JerryPenguin 3 Posted December 28, 2025 Posted December 28, 2025 I have ordered one Ugoos AM9 64bit with Amlogic S905X5 SOC. 1
Luke 42077 Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 OK then yes this is something we can look at. Thanks.
JerryPenguin 3 Posted December 30, 2025 Posted December 30, 2025 Hi Luke, Thanks in advance and happy new year. The box is not expected to arrive until mid-January Unfortunately, boxes with h266/VVC support are hard to come by, and as far as I know, the only Armlogiy CPU with h266/VVC support is the S905X5 SOC (without M). See you soon, Best regards, Jerry 1
