Can't see Japanese episodes

I have two TV series which display the wrong episodes, or rather, they display only 1 when there are several.

They are japanese, so maybe Emby doesn't understand that.

Is there a manual index file one can create to make all episodes appear in the TV series listing, or is there a way (on an LG TV) to list all files in a folder and play them that way?

Please, no suggestions on renaming the files. That is not an option.

Emby is not the one that provides the info.

Is is the scraper used by emby on your library settings you need to go to their site  and check how are the episodes ordered.

Example of metadata proivders:

www.thetvdb.com

www.themoviedb.org

Or manually create your own custom metadata.

Hi there, can you please go over a specific example? Thanks

None the less, seeing the names of the files might make it possible to explain what's happening.

It may well be that the episodes are being stacked up as alternative versions of a single episode.  If you press the (i) icon next to the episode in the season view, does the display show a dropdown list for the video?

Ok, well using the above info, the series Emby is having troubles with are:

Some examples:

Your.Home.is.My.Business.E01.1080p.WEB-DL.AAC.H.264-KMX.mp4

Where is the season in the names?

ie S01E01 or S03E05

As mentioned, filename renaming isn't an option.

So, back to my original two questions:

1. How can I tell Emby that these are the correct episodes without renaming?

2. How can I ignore the TV database and just list all files in a folder?

thats the problem yeah, you have no season identifier.

Here is an example of a Japanese series with no season identifier that Emby does not have an issue with:

https://www.thetvdb.com/series/the-flower-shop-without-roses

Bara no nai Hanaya ep01 (1280x720 DivX6.xxHD).avi

Now, here's another example that Emby presents ALL episodes from, and this series does NOT have a tvdb entry:

Nobunaga no Chef EP01 720p HDTV x264 AAC-NGB.mkv

So, I think we're looking at a software issue in Emby here.

1) You can't.  Emby uses the folder and file names to make the metadata lookup, and your names provide incomplete information (e.g. no season when there are two to choose from, so the lookup fails).  Your insistence that name changes aren't allowed is also an insistence not allowing a solution.

However, if you can at least put your files into show/season folders, even without changing the names of the files themselves, then that might be sufficient.

2) Try the Folder View tab on the show page; otherwise... Windows Explorer?

Without using proper names you will have continued problems with each new show you add as your feeding Emby garbage file names.

Name your files properly and Emby will work a lot better.

Well, garbage file names, garbage software... I guess it's depending on your point of view. ;)

EDIT: The above sounded harsh, but this is an issue that could be solved with software, and I see that "please pay me" thing every time I start it and things like this doesn't push me in favour of ever wanting to do that.

How does the software know what season it belongs to if you don't tell it?

If this was Law and Order you could have 23 different Episode Ones, so if your file is just named "E01" how does Emby know what it is?

More like "Garbage In, Garbage Out" :)

I feel your pain about renaming files but it's really the only solution to this problem.  I'm not sure how 3rd party rename utilities will do trying to rename the files but I would check out a couple to see if they can make sense of some of these series.  I would give FileBot a try on a copy of a series.

If a 3rd party rename util can handle this then it can mostly be done automatically for you.

Filebot is a good option, or use something like Advanced renamer to batch add either S01 or S02 to those episodes, as emby I dont know which season those episodes belong to, you may want to add a feature request for emby to guess the season if there are multiple and not specificied, with some random algorithm there 😆

How are your files organized?

Each series is in its own folder. An example folder name:

BG.Personal.Bodyguard.S02.2020.Complete.1080p.WEB-DL.AAC.H.264-MagicStar

So there's your season identifier. For Asian series, this naming convention doesn't seem uncommon. However, first seasons doesn't always have any identifier in the folder name, and then there's multi-episode specials as well, which aren't part of a season.

Oh, here's another fun one for you:

Massan.E001.720p.HDTV.x264.AC3-INA.mkv

This isn't available in the LG app I'm guessing, as I can't find it?

Also, for everyone jumping down my throat: Showing only a SINGLE EPISODE of an entire season is not only weird, it's bad user experience! How did Emby figure out what season that episode came from, anyway? So why not guess the same for the rest?

Have you checked that all the episodes are not stacked up as alternative versions?

Today, I managed to locate the folder view on the LG TV app. However, it shows *exactly the same* groupings as in the "Program" view. It doesn't show folder names at all!

Hi @eobetdisajn, we plan to improve the TV folder view in future updates. Thanks for the feedback.

Chinese series this time:

Unchained Love 2022 S1EP05.1080p.WEB-DL AAC x264 - ANDY.mp4

Unchained Love 2022 S1EP06.1080p.WEB-DL AAC x264 - ANDY.mp4

I don't understand why in 2022 (soon 2023) fuzzy logic or heck, just a regex can't be used to figure out episodes! I mean, this isn't rocket science and regardless of all of this, hiding files from any view is really, really bad UX.

EDIT: Ha, apparently there's some currently misguided attempt to identify the episode... unfortunately, it identifies it as season 20, episode 22 and that's probably why only a single episode shows up in Emby... come on... I manually named the folder to S01 this time... still pretty far from rocket science, imo...

Actually, meeting the conflicting expectations of different users is not so easy!

It is usual to put the date of the series in parentheses, and if that is done Emby will recognise what it is.

Emby is looking for the word "Season".  Also your "S01EP05" is not one of Emby's formats either - try "S01E05"

Doing things in the expected way is perfectly easy and really does save a load of trouble (and need for complaints! ;) )
