Understanding audio/video stats: codecs, res, framerate, bitrate, etc.

Hi all,

Up to now, I haven't been too worried about maximizing the stats.  So far, if it's been full HD (1080p) and stereo, it's good enough for our tv's.

Now I'm taking another look.  Maybe in the future we might get better tv's and/or a surround sound system.  I haven't owned a stereo system in decades.  I did as a young man, but that was long ago.  I don't even drive with the radio on anymore.  Situational awareness and all that.

I'm thinking maybe I should do better than stereo audio, and 1080p@30fps.  Again, they play fine on our tv's, but I'd hate to do them over again a few years from now.  Just wondering what stats other people are okay with.

Thanks

When i rip my Discs to my NAS i use the default Audio and Vido Settings, so if there is Atmos Audio or DTS-HD etc. i take it exactly like it is on the disc.

I have a home Cinema with a good Surround Sound System and i don't wanna limit myself in quality if it is available on the disc.

Sure this will take more space but you could shrink movies using to reencode them to h265 if you need space.

I would always take the most available Bitrate and Audio a disc provides, this is why emby is able to transcode if needed.

Hmm.  The above example was made from a screen capture.  I just discovered the screen capture software I'm using (videoproc) is limited to 30fps.  Time to replace it.

Can anyone recommend an easy to use screen capture software, that has configuration options, and can handle higher settings like 60fps?  I'm happy to pay for a professional program.

Thanks

Figures.  Sometimes the Microsoft app works, other times it doesn't.  Unreliable.  Gee, what a surprise.

I found OBS (free open source) it's amazingly good, even found my video card and does hardware encoding automatically.

doing testing now, so far, so good

Solved!

I was able to figure out what I need to do.  I like to record a lot of streams from church, music, gaming and such, and I finally figured out the best way.

I can now capture 1080p@60fps with zero lost frames, with 5.1 surround sound, using OBS.  That program is amazing!  and free!

I also cleaned my Windows 10 Home desktop pc, stopped all those gazillion processes from running in the background, by installing Simplewall (replaces windows firewall) which stops windows services from accessing networking, which basically puts them all to sleep YES!  I'll open the firewall once a month maybe to allow updates, then lock it back down again.

This link has a gazillion ways to clean your windows 10 install, to speed up windows even more, well worth doing!

Hope this helps somebody...

Cheers
