rbjtech 5284 Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 So as said earlier - you need to look at multiple resolution/bitrates if your intended users have poor internet connections. Not only will it mean a better service for them (both in delivery speed but also better quality than real-time transcoding), but you will not have to pay for CPU to transcode each time the movie is played. A 720p/1Mbit version of media pre-converted will only take maybe 1Gbyte storage so yes you will need more storage, but vs the cost of more CPU, this should be much more economic. Maybe also include a 1080p/2Mbit version (or something in between the native and lowest setting) - and emby will pick the most suitable one to Direct Play if it can. For occasional use, transcoding works fine - but for regular usage, imo multi-copies are the way to go.

So, does it mean it can handle up to 8 simultaneous transcoding if I use 8 cores vCPU from Hetzner? No throttling enabled. I believe so if maintaining similar variables of the test (low bitrate, 1080p max content). But look at the price for that, for that price point you can get a dedicated machine, gpu and all, I would compare at that point. Look at their auctions too. But I don’t like to rely on transcode that much, that’s why I can serve so many users with that cheap model, focus on the media served and always try to have a low bitrate version available, that way you can get direct play on most scenarios. Carlo 4561 Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 Out of curiosity, what is the reason you can't self host an Emby Server? Does you ISP block you or do you have very limited upload bandwidth from your home?

I'm living in Southeast Asia and all ISP here do not allow port forwarding so I can't run emby server through open ports. Plus, all ISP here provide low download and upload speeds and it will be much more expensive than VPS or dedicated servers if I want to get over 100 Mbps download and upload speeds.(If I buy VPS, I can get 1Gbps upload speed in cheaper prices) So I guess VPS or dedicated server would be the only solution for me according to where I'm currently living.
Carlo 4561 Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 Understood. The blocked ports could be overcome with the right type of VPN setup but nothing you can do to push more bandwidth if not available. Just thought I'd ask to make sure you actually needed a remote server which sounds like it.
