  1. Jellyfin is more popular as pirates hate to pay for stuff. Period. The fact it's open source means nothing. Jellyfin is extremely fragmented and still based on Luke's ancient code. Remember, Jellyfin was created because someone didn't like the fact there was a nag screen to pay for an open source product. They created Emby Unlocked and went forward and forked what is now Jellyfin. It's an inferior product that works well enough that people are willing to put up with its issues as it costs them zero dollars, yet costs them time and frustration.

  2. That's still money that people can save if they use Jellyfin. Fact of the matter is, Jellyfin is so popular because it's free and works. It might be much more rough and unpolished than Emby but it still works for what most people want and if it can be gotten for free then that's what most people will get.

  3. It was meant as a friendly warning for if you pay for access to a server and a troubleshooting step. If you are paying for access to a private server then you are breaking the Emby TOS and we would effectively help you do it. If you are not the admin of the server then some settings on the server could cause the problems and nothing could be done about it. @Suliamuis explaining it very well. To really troubleshoot, replicate the problem and upload a client/server log here. It would make everything much easier to troubleshoot, limit any speculations to what's wrong and help the developers find and fix a protentional problem.

  4. We are trying to pinpoint it. If you are not paying for access to a emby-server of some other person, then how do you do it? Are you hosting a (GPU)-Server in a DC in Nicaragua yourself, which does the transcoding for you? (Would be quite the luxury, because again this country is not your typical Datacenter-location) Or is this a server somewhere in a private house in Nicaragua running through a private customer ISP-line? What are the specs of that contract? Are you sure you have enough upload-bandwith to stream 4K HDR? According to open statistics about provider speed Nicaragua offers a median upload speed of 22.97 Mbps. This would be not enough for your file above. And it would explain why you can stream 1080p, but not 4k. And it would explain why Amazon Stick behaves the same. And just to make it clear, most folks here are not hosting in an "economically aspiring country" (to use well-meaning semantics), and nonetheless are sticking with 1080p. Getting 4k to run smoothly, especially across continents, is not that easy Sir i am afraid to say. And since you are not asking those questions from a sysadmin-side, but from the client(watchers)-side, it looks like you are not administering this server yourself, correct? Anyway, if you pay for you it, or you don't, it doesn't matter, but the person you should contact in that case is the person who gave you the access/account.

  5. Yeah i think the fact that its fully free and open source is probably the reason. I keep being quite unimpressed with their apps, generally unpolished, and it's actually harder to navigate than emby IMHO. I keep going back and trying Jellyfin once in a while, but the settings pages and admin pages and everything is just like, not near enough? If that makes sense. Several of my users rely on the web apps, and they'd have a hard time using the default jellyfin But yeh the argument I see the most about why someone should pick emby is "why pay for premium for something you get for free with Jellyfin", plus general suspicion about it not being open source, there's people being like "you never know, they might start enshittifying it and going the Plex route at any point"

  6. Hi, yeah Emby can be great for music! While there are always ongoing improvements that can be made, I think it's underestimated and overlooked by many. Anyway, your post/comments made me remember something from long ago... Around the time when Windows Media Center (WMC) was around, Windows also had a Zune platform in operation (including physical players and even an online store). I tried out the desktop version at the time and quite liked the album wall backgrounds that were generated. There's not many images to find online now, and of course I don't have that old PC running it anymore. But, as a fun weekend project I've been trying to somewhat replicate it with Emby (perhaps out-of-fashion and too digital-retro - but interesting to me anyway)... Here's a static screenshot I found as a starting point: Here's my first Emby attempt (same album): I've managed to get this creating a random background of Albums by the Album Artist each time a new song plays. It runs for about 10sec. at the start of each song and then stays fixed. Here's a short video, rather than a much longer explanation: albums.mp4 My general idea (as per above video) would be to have a random Album art background relating to the Artist. Perhaps it could be an extra option to the existing Backdrop and Primary Image Blur choices? Beyond my first go at this, there's a lot more I still want to experiment with to get it looking and working better... Cheers!

  7. Hi there, A friend is reporting a very recent issue with the emby app: She can't see the video when connected via hdmi to her video projector or tv. Sound works fine, and she can see emby's interface when clicking on the touch screen. She's using Emby for iOS 2.2.52 on an iPad air 4th gen. No transcoding on the server. (Big) log attached, user is host3. Let me know if a cleaner log could be useful, I can restart the server and ask her to try and read a video again. I did a server hardware upgrade at the beginning of the week, but did not change any setting in emby. I'd guess the issue comes from the emby 2.2.52 client update. Thanks embyserver.txt

  11. I updated my test-server and now i get the same bug. So something changed with the latest release. Yeah as long as it sticks in the native menu it should work as intended. Even if its a minor thing I appreciate the bug report! I have already put Claude on in and I think it's solved already

  12. Those filters should be correct Although, it is redundant to have the filter for media type=movie and show, since that is the default. But if you want to have them, go ahead! Regarding the error, I cant reproduce that. What server version are you running? This was an bug with Emby version before 4.10.0.9 or something if i remember correctly

  13. 119$ is still a lot of money for most. People will put up with a lot if it's free.

  14. Instead of that, why not address the issue directly and try to find what in the Qnap firewall (or whatever) is blocking access to mb3admin.com? Paul

  15. No need, if you forwarded the logs to Luke, I'm sure he'll grasp where it is that anonymization failed.

  17. Not a problem @Deihmos, I'll see what Luke finds and we can go from there; we'll definitely get it sorted!

  18. Howdy guys! Just letting you know I've just uploaded v6.0.1.0 to the Emby Catalog, which is compiled against the latest Emby Core Libraries.

  20. @LukeI'd like to kindly follow up on a bug that has been persisting for quite some time. I'm a bit disappointed that a permanent fix hasn't been implemented yet. I hope this can be prioritised and resolved as soon as possible. Thanks. Here's the technical explanation of why it breaks auto-next-episode: When Emby streams video via HLS (HTTP Live Streaming), it splits the video into small segments (.ts files) and creates a playlist (.m3u8 file) that tells the client where all the segments are. When subtitles are present, Emby also generates separate WebVTT subtitle segments alongside the video segments. The problem is that these subtitle segments are generated asynchronously — they don't always finish at the same time as the video segments. When the video reaches the end, the HLS playlist should contain an #EXT-X-ENDLIST tag to tell the client "the stream is finished, move on". But because the subtitle segment generation is still running or hasn't closed cleanly, the playlist never gets that clean end signal. The iOS/Android Emby app is waiting for the stream to properly end before triggering auto-next-episode — but it never gets that signal, so it just freezes at the last frame waiting forever. When I enable Disable HLS Subtitles, Emby stops generating those WebVTT subtitle segments entirely, so the video-only HLS playlist terminates cleanly with #EXT-X-ENDLIST, the app receives the end signal, and auto-next-episode triggers correctly. In short: subtitle segments race against video segments at the end of a stream, and the subtitle segments win — preventing the stream from ever cleanly ending.

  21. I’d like to begin by expressing how much I’ve been enjoying the Emby DVR. After being a long-time Plex DVR user, I made the switch to Emby at the start of 2024, and I’ve been really satisfied with the experience. To that end, while it’s not a major issue, I have a suggestion: it would be great to have a visual indicator showing any added recording time (like an additional 30 minutes) during an active recording. Currently, this extra time isn’t reflected in the active recording view, as demonstrated in the attached example.

  23. I've experienced this. You don't need to stop and restart the video, just skipping back a few seconds will fix it. It seems to happen then the Android screensaver kicks in.

  24. I respectfully disagree — AV1 is very much ready for prime time in 2026, at least on the hardware decoding side. The fragmentation issue you mention is real for software encoding workflows, but for streaming and playback it is largely a non-issue now. The major streaming platforms including YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime have all standardized on AV1 for delivery. Browser support is universal. Hardware decoder support is built into all modern Android TV processors. Our benchmark testing confirms this — Amlogic S928X and MediaTek MT8695 both handle 4K AV1 at 60fps sustained with no issues whatsoever. The hardware decoding path is completely stable and mature. The encoding fragmentation you describe is a valid concern for content creators doing offline encoding workflows. But for streaming app developers and end users consuming content, AV1 is already the best option available — 34% better bandwidth efficiency vs H.264 at same quality, hardware decode support on all modern chips, and universal browser/device support.
