Choice overload is a cognitive impairment that occurs when a person is presented with too many options and has difficulty making a choice. This can result in a decision paralysis or general dissatisfaction with your choices. The solution, to reduce the number of option. What does this have to do with Emby? A lot actually. How we interact with our media is heavily influenced by the UI. It can be the difference between starting a new series and watching The Office for the 20th time, or finding a movie to watch that will be mutually enjoyed by the the group or audience. If you want to find something to watch you will have much more success choosing a movie or show from a small random selection of 10-20 options versus a massive pile in the hundreds or even thousands. With the latter, you become exhausted before you even view all the options. This is compounded when you aren't able to view important information like the synopsis without going into a sub menu for each option. People are fickle and have a short attention span. We get satisfaction out of making easy choices.4 points

So much is 'possible' and free/open lists are available from trakt or mdb - so the list is not the difficult part - as said earlier in this thread. https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/134058-why-does-emby-make-it-so-difficult-to-discover-media/#findComment-1403559 What IS difficult is how to present the content of those lists/collections/playlists - Plex and frankly all other media platforms/players (netflix/prime etc) seems to have no issues doing this - Emby just needs to follow. The request for smartplaylists was raised in 2016 I believe - and yet, we still cannot add dynamic or user selected content outside the fixed rows we currently have ... I'm hoping 4.9 brings this .. but then again, i've been waiting on this for years .. so who knows..3 points

Near-term goals: New WMC UI Windows App the beta for the new Windows app is near completion. As soon as it is released, you can expect a new WMC beta for Windows based on the same application modes WMC UI for Linux Shortly, we will start a beta for a new Emby Linux app (non-wmc). Same here, only after the main app's beta is over, we can have a WMC version of it, as we cannot let WMC UI matters distract the primary apps' testing. But the good new is that we can finally have a Linux WMC app, which we don't have yet Lookíng further into the future, the following is planned: Updates to the WMC UI There will be a cycle for implementing all (or most of) the things which are currently on the wishlist: https://github.com/EmbySupport/Emby.WMC.UI/issues?q=sort%3Aupdated-desc+is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen Also the Dark Steel theme is yet to be released (https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/129656-breaking-news-uhd4k-update-and-two-new-themes-coming-for-the-wmc-ui/#comment-1362815) New WMC UI Android App The Windows and Linux apps are based on the new Emby.Client cross-platform architecture, which aims to unify client apps which are currently totally separate app implementations. For Windows and Linux, the primary Emby clients have been a priority and have come first. For Android, we may start with a WMC UI version, serving as a proof-of-concept to help the decision about whether and when to migrate the Android app to the Emby.Client platform2 points

After spending some time visiting family over the Thanksgiving holidays and a bit of discussing on what we've been watching it became very clear that everyone who has access to my Emby server chooses not to use it over other services like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon, etc. Even though they have free access to to my server with every possible movie/show imaginable they would rather use multiple other paid services. When I asked them why, they all said "It is too hard to find things to watch on Emby". I probed a bit more and they said unless it is newly added or something I've already in progress it is impossible to find new things to watch. The difference being that all the other services promote content discovery on the home screen. I would agree with their comments as I too struggle with finding content and I'm the one who curated it. For anything not currently on the home screen, it can taking drilling down multiple levels just to see the synopsis of a show/movie. I know how the filters and sorting work but it seems like the average user (my family) isn't using them. Is content discovery a priority on the roadmap for Emby?2 points

The answer to the original question is one of simple design for purpose. We designed Emby to be your personal media server and the other things you are comparing it to are designed to influence your behavior and sell you content. We purposely didn't take this route from the beginning. However, some happy medium is probably the right answer and the smart playlists will be the first step. This will allow each server admin to "sell" to their own users in some fashion.2 points

Gosh guys you are AMAZIN…..that worked a treat. I just went onto my phone and logged into my Synology NAS and went to the files and changed them into the sequencing as you suggested (s01e01 s01e02 etc) and it immediately worked and now all episodes are there (even though those episodes have not been televised) …….so yes it works. In future I will try and make sure that the BBC series comply with this naming convention Thanks a million2 points

Hi. If you click on that episode, do you see the other ones in the "Version" drop down?2 points

Agree 100% and this is why so much time and effort has been spent on this forum requesting ways to do 'spotlights/recommendations/smart playlists' ON THE OPENING SCREEN as a simple row. I am truely hoping the 4.9 'Smart Playlists' has this option - if not, then it's a complete waste of time - because nobody outside of admins will use it because the content it creates is just not easily accessible. With the new MDB scripts putting these 'playlists' into collections, coupled with the ability of recently putting collections on the home screen - this has actually improved things a lot (in terms of quickly and effortlessly getting to content) BUT this is still what the ADMIN wants to show the user - NOT what the user necessarily wants to see. So I believe the next logical stage is for a collection OR playlist CONTENT to be displayed as a ROW of items configured in the Home Screen section for that user. For example - if I want a row of the 'Trending TV Shows' (from trakt) then I should be able to configure that. A simple top level drop down context menu 'Add to Home Screen' is all that is needed. I'm very much hoping this is what 4.9 and 'Smart Playlists' can provide - if not, and it simply creates a 'playlist' (buried in playlists) then this new functionality will be essentially wasted as no users will be able to easily see the results - and thus users will not use it.2 points

The regular android app is not good compared to the android tv version. Its behaviour is also weird because it doesn’t feel like an app meant to be used with a remote. the epg also doesn’t utilize the space. The channel names take up far too much space compared to the rest2 points
-
Maybe I'm missing the point here - but as a 'client/user' of the system - how would I KNOW to use this function in the first place ? When I watch a show, I don't assume an episode MAY be missing and therefore manually check each time - I want to be NOTIFIED that an episode is missing - thus I know in advance. The only useful function 'missing episodes' now serves is for the Admin (and then are far better tools out there for this) or for the poor client when they realise they have missed an episode and then attempt to find out what's going on. I get the technical reasons why, but removing this basic functionality without replacing it with something that is functional (from a client perspective) was a poor decision imo.2 points

I also have the problem of finding something to watch. It is often, as has been mentioned, oh just watch Rogue One again, or whatever. Also think that actually Emby has some fairly easy ways to find stuff if people actually use them - Suggestions has been mentioned, or sometimes I sort by Date Added, or by Random. But that only (sort of) works if people are prepared to try out the Sorting or Filter options. So, just to option to have / move (undefined) things to the Home page would help - maybe something like Because You Watched on the Home screen. Or learning to use Search a bit - tbh its not that difficult (or shouldn't be) to find all you Denzel Washington films.1 point

I was simply answering the original question as to why the UI is designed as it is and also acknowledging that some adjustments to this original design are warranted. Not sure why that would meet with such animosity but Happy Thanksgiving!1 point

Okay, so removing my 4K library allows the series to merge. Thanks guys. I was hoping I'd be able to have a separate 4k television library like I do with 4k movies (just for easier access when using a 4k capable tv), but this is better than nothing1 point

I don't think so - I'm not 100% on what you did, but it sounded like you added the same content to multiple libraries - ie a receipe for db corruption. All @pmacneeds to do is have a single library with multiple folders/shares - but I'm sure you're aware of that ..1 point

In Arch you have to extend the service unit to allow read/write access to other filesystems/paths. For example: [Service] ReadWritePaths="/mnt/My Files I/Docs/Backups/Emby Backups" https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Emby1 point

ItemUpdated is still the closest option though. We just need to add more information to the event about what changed.1 point

TV shows seem to have a standard display: the first page after selecting the show displays the seasons (or episodes) in a horizontal format [ScreenShot(SS) 1]. When selecting a season, this works well. Once you select a season, the actual episodes are displayed on a different screen in a vertical format (SS 2), which I prefer, because there is more room on the screen for the episode descriptions to be displayed. However, when a show has only one season, all the episodes are displayed in the same horizontal format as the first, season selection screen (SS 3). I suggest that you add an IF--THEN that looks for the number of seasons after selecting the main show title. If there is only one season, the display would jump to the vertical episode display, instead of displaying the episodes in the horizontal season selection mode (or at least offer an option, if some users prefer the horizontal display).1 point

Thank you. Sorry for the delayed response - I have been very busy at work this week. Using the "Always Show Season Folders" eventually gets me to the display screen I prefer, and would still be intuitive for my new users. It is an adequate resolution for now, but a bit less than ideal, from my perspective. I personally do not care for the horizontal display in either of the "Show all episodes options...". When browsing episodes, the vertical format (past the seasons screen) is both easier to scroll through & displays more of the descriptions at a single glance. Additionally, my suggestion below would skip the extra click to get to the better episode display format. Since this IS the Feature Request forum, I would like to request that you offer an additional option in the "Preferred TV show display": "Show all episodes of single season shows in Vertical format" (or equivalent verbiage). You could even break the "Preferred TV show display" into 2 sections: 1 section could be the same as you have it, with an additional section having a choice between vertical & horizontal formatting of episodes, for those who want all seasons together, but still want the vertical format for episode display.1 point

It does have some privacy concerns but it could also be done by checking public lists of what's trending on Trakt or wherever. They have a list of what's trending on other services and sometimes it includes items not in my collection but that's okay as I can go and find it and add it to my collection I also like their option to browse by award and their list of movies released this day or week in history and especially their lists of movies relevant to the current holidays I often find things I otherwise wouldn't have thought of watching or rewatching I use emby almost exclusively to watch my TV series and that's easy because it shows the next episode to continue watching but I open Plex for suggestions of what else to watch - especially for movies1 point

include the emby supported naming convention - s01e01, s01e02 etc instead of Series 1- 1.... (as Eric has hit on above, I think the Series 1- 1 (with the lack of space after the 1) is causing emby to think this is a multi-version of episode 1. ie only child - s01e01 - Eh?.mp4 only child - s01e02 - Raisins.mp41 point

Oh right, I see it. It wasn't always like that, will look into it. Probably it comes from a general UI change. But that's one of the advantages of the PluginUI: If things like this happen, it's on us to fix it, no longer will all plugin developers have to fix it in their plugin javascript files. Over time, so many plugin UI pages have become broken by things like that (or very often just visual glitches), that we wanted to provide a stable way for creating UI that will last without change. Yea, also because it drastically reduces the effort to provide configuration UI. With the legacy method, you had to perform so many steps for adding just a single option value: Add the value as property to your options class Create HTML markup for adding an appropriate html element and add it to your html template Add javascript code to the js file for setting the html element value on load Add javascript code to the js file for retrieving the html element value and including it in the data on save Write javascript code for conditional hiding and saving depending on other html element values (if needed) For dropdowns with dynamic options: Implement an API service Implement an API endpoint to provide those option values Write javascript code to invoke this API on load Parse the result and populate the dropdown options of the select element With PluginUI, it's just this: Add the value as property to your options class For conditional display/enablement: Add an attribute to the property For dynamic dropdown values: Add a second property with the values and an antribute to the property pointing at them (grey means optional)1 point

Before you reinstalled had you changed Emby's port to 80 when you first installed? If not you should have specified port 8096 in your request (i.e. go to 192.1689.1.192:8096 in your case). Paul1 point

While i personally like Emby the way it is, what i have learned from speaking to family members like Jdielsel is that, Emby is simply not user friendly in any way or form. Some quick examples are, Nobody knew settings even existed. Nobody knew how mixed libraries worked forcing me to stop using them. The good old quality setting. Some didn't even know they could scroll to the right for more libraries. Just to name a few. Netflix gets around this by just spoon feeding people with everything on the main screen like fx. suggestion. So I think having suggestions as a home style choice would be an excellent idea. Would make Emby a little more accessible for many people.1 point

That response must be an AI script because we see it after every release and NADA follows...1 point
-
Yes, it would be a good idea, but I’d prefer it to be implemented per user rather than per server. This is because some users might not want this additional layer of protection, while others might find it useful. Therefore, it should be a configurable option based on each user’s preference, allowing them to enable or disable it as they see fit.1 point
