Thank you to everyone who took the time to ask the Emby team questions across all of the different platforms including here on the forums. There were a lot of great questions that were thrown our way and we've been excited to get the answers out to you. While some of the questions we were not able to answer, we did our best to give you the most accurate and clear answers possible. Now without further ado, here is the first series of questions and answers for you to look over! Please keep in mind more questions and answers will be coming in additional blog posts in the coming days, so not all questions are being answered today. Who owns Emby? Emby LLC owns the Emby product and is a private entity. The owners are undisclosed but note that the development team has full control over the direction of the product. We are not beholden to or under the influence of any investor or investment group. What is the history of Emby? Emby grew out of an open source project called MediaBrowser. Emby's origin in concept came out of that project but there is actually none of that code base still within it. Emby ended up being completely built from the ground up to be a server-based ecosystem as opposed to just a single app as the old MediaBrowser was. Around 2011 what is now the core development team for Emby were contributors to MediaBrowser. We saw the opportunity to build something more flexible than the WMC environment would allow and embarked on creating what we then called MB 3. The core developers spent over a year furiously writing code before anything was released to the public. It was then probably another two years of dedicated development before anything was truly usable as a system. In 2015 it was decided that we had moved so far away from what MB originally was that we needed a new name. A few of the devs got together and came up with "Emby". There are a few reasons behind that name but one of the main ones was that you needed something that wasn't already trademarked and domained. Emby fit that bill and has the benefit of sounding like "MB" when you say it. With the new name, we needed a new logo and we actually held a contest in the forum taking contributions from users and that finally landed us on the logo you see now. Since 2015 we have expanded the team and worked diligently to try and continue to craft the best truly personal media server system we can. We still have a long way to go but have also come a long way to where we are. What are the most popular Emby clients? We do not have exact data on this, due to sideloading and the such, but through the app store platforms we can gain general ideas. Android is the most popular amongst our userbase (both mobile and TV) with iOS in second place as the most downloaded app. What Emby clients do the development team use most for personal use? Our development team uses a wide variety of apps just as our user base does. We have people on the team using Android on mobile and TV, iOS, Apple TV, Roku and Xbox as well. As you can see our dev team really is as diverse as our user base when it comes to how we use the server. These were just a few of the questions about Emby as a product and who we are. In the next blog post we will be covering a few different things such as some of the future goals of Emby as well as release schedules and more!4 points

Okay, so gonna put out a very rough release tomorrow for testing. There are some annoying things I can’t seem to get around but have a basic version working :)4 points

I'm a plex life time member, but I have been using Emby for over six years continuously, but there is a feature which I have always thought is missing in Emby which I would like and encourage the developer to consider including especially in this dispensation where families can social or commingle due to COVID 19. Today, I received a notification from Plex about it new feature titled Watch together you can read about it here https://support.plex.tv/articles/watch-together/ The feature allows friends and families at distance to watch same movies together instantly, you simply invite all your buddy, once they signed to the system which can be seeing in the server then play and pause as needed, this I think is cool feature should be added to emby. Let's here your though if Emby developer should consider adding this feature to our beloved Emby Media https://www.bing.com/news/search?q=Plex+Watch+Together&qpvt=plex+watch+together&FORM=EWRE2 points

I had to try three times and it finally worked. Couldn't tell you what I did wrong the first two times. I can connect to https internally and I just changed the setup for the reverse proxy. It works now. Thanks everyone.2 points

I'm just glad @ShaneP is still willing to support his plugin. It's the #1 thing I use in Emby and I appreciate his efforts! I'd rather wait for the update than not have any update at all.2 points

The RTM facility doesn't work on network filesystems. /tmp is tmpfs (usually) and to be honest I couldn't say if inotify would work there either. Try a different path on a block filesystem.2 points

Good day, Emby community support forum welcome any feedback from our members, unfortunately some are using that to misleading with false fact about the products, wasting other members time, we normally give these type of members a time, but some continue doing this. This community start way back on 2013, we rarely used this option with some members, when no other option to let these members stop these false fact posting, or simply spamming the forum with these type of worthless post, then we force to use this. So, if you are in this spot, no problem, it's not a ban, it simply your post will be moderated and need our mod's team to prove it, if your post start to be a good one "in fact matters" either against or with emby products, then the restricted will left off. We always welcome all type of feedback, we start this community with, and will always do. Thank you all. My best2 points

But why would I ever want to open a "metadata manager" thingy? I have never had to in 10 plus years, why make me now??? I simply want to see them in the season, just like always thanks.2 points

I believe a nice added feature is to have the ability to timeout partially watched shows automatically. Being able to set an expiration of resume point on titles. My kids love to watch videos but never seem to finish then, so they have a ton of titles that have resume points. What would be a nice addon would be the ability to either set the resume point to expire after X number of days. By default the resume point will be kept indefinitely. Adding in, let's say, "30" will then set all the resume points last set 30 days ago to expire and the resume point data be removed from the title for the user. This should be a global setting that applies to all users in the system. Wording of the feature can be different. Thanks, \ above11 point

Poster Overlay GUI A simple Windows Forms application that allows users to add 4K Ultra HD Banners to their movie posters. About: Firstly, I know that we have the coverart plugin but I prefer having a cleaner look with multiple options for my 4k library. I started making this app a few weeks ago with absolutely zero knowledge in coding, this entire project was built through using chatgpt to guide me into building, modifying and editing the code through lots of trial and error. I'm more than open to suggestions to improve and or add to the project (such as more banner options etc). Features: Choose from multiple overlay images (4k Ultra HD, with HDR, with DV, With HDR and IMAX and with DV and Imax) Preview the combined result Save the resulting image as a new file How to Use: Download and extract the PosterOverlay_v1.0.0.zip file from github. Run the PosterOverlay.exe file to launch the application. Click on the "Select Poster" button to choose the base image (poster). Use the dropdown box to select an overlay image. Preview the result in the main window. Click "Save Poster" to save the resulting image to your computer. Prerequisites: .NET 6.0 Runtime is required to run the application. Please download and install the appropriate version for your operating system. GitHub Link: https://github.com/pejamas/Poster-Overlay-GUI1 point

Are we talking about syncing playback between users (devices) on one server, or is it more about attempting to sync playback across multiple servers. I can think of a way to sync playback across multiple devices connected to one server. But, I'm not entirely sure about syncing playback across different servers, that might need a 3rd party app, and hosting... Maybe? Inside one server, where users are on different devices, the playback sync might be easy enough... Not perfectly sync'd, but probabaly within the second... Perhaps millisecond depending on the connection speed, and location. I thought there was an app being developed which did this sort of thing, but I'm not sure what came of it. Sounds like it could be set up as follows, for a one server setup: 1. Users login (create a session) 2. One user is set to the controlling user 3. The controlling session user is responsible for beginning playback. 4. Probabaly some kind of config page off the server dashboard to setup a group to control everything... I guess... to start. 5. When the controlling session starts playback, we grab the event, and send the same command to the other device sessions in the group. 6. Maybe some kind of playstate pause command to sync everything up close (close enough) to each other. Like I say, that could be the easy part. Maybe... Across multiple server, this would need an authentication to setup, and login, sending server IDs around to attempt controlling. Might be too much for me to write. But the one server setup could be done.1 point

I’ve found that my collections keep shrinking because the films inside them are being upgraded. If metadata like watch time, watched status, poster data, etc can be maintained when the film file is upgraded- why can’t Emby remember what collection(s) it is in?1 point
-
The folders are named as if they are a multi-disc album. Therefore when you save album images or nfo metadata, it goes up a level and treats that as the album folder. So that explains that. Try naming the CDX folders to match actual album titles, and then delete the errant files that were saved in the Persian Traditional Music folder.1 point

For testing purposes, stopped my Emby container, renamed to /emby.bak and re-spun the Emby container, which creates a new one again, as mentioned on an earlier message. Only brought in the same 2 folders, as to not bring in +1,200 movies, but only those in 4k and YIFY quality. Showed all the movies, many duplicates, copied AutoCollections v4.6.0.22.dll into the /plugins folder, restarted Emby and it quickly merged/grouped all the movies as expected. THANKS! I am not using Top Picks and New Release at this time. I had never even looked into those 2 plugins. So I guess don't? Heh1 point

Stopped Emby container, removed AutoCollections.dll (v1.0.0.5), copied over AutoCollections.dll (4.6.0.22), restarted Emby container. So I thought I had the Star Wars collection in YIFY (crappy quality, but good enough for tablet viewing) and tagged all of them, which the system downloaded and processed fairly quick (under 20mins), and I'LL BE DAMNED, it did it... it grouped the Amazing Spider Man, that I had ungroup earlier when I replied for testing purposes, and now it just merged/grouped all them new ones... well, I guess the version of Emby that I am running at this time, running is c is currently working! Don't care much about the logging not working, but the group is! Thanks!1 point

This does seem to be something about my particular Emby database/config. I just created a new root folder for a new library with just the one movie folder in it (containing the 3 versions from before). Creating a new library in Emby and pointing to that folder results in same thing: only 2 versions shown. BUT! I also created a new Emby instance, pointed it to that exact same folder and it shows me all 3 versions! Library settings between the new instance and the new library on existing instance are identical. So it must be something outside of Library settings. I'm off to compare all the other settings and see if I can find something.1 point

Quick update to this: apparently all I needed to do was REBOOT the iphone after its 17.4 update. Never thought I had to do this ever before. IOS 17.4 plays fine on the same network as embyserver now. All is well with the universe.1 point

@LukeCan you please help us understand the reasoning behind removing the config file method of overriding the transcoding settings too, with no way to override them from the UI too? The API way is really not ideal, especially since it also requires an additional plugin since the required settings are not available in the core. It's been 1.5 years as mentioned and this really shouldn't be taking this long since the underlying stuff seems to all be present, minus the UI.1 point

Sorry I'm late. It all works now with Emby Connect, no ddns, not port forwarding or anything needed. I just started the entire process from the bottom up yet again and it worked this time. Too bad my primary hard drive went out about 2 weeks later. Thankfully I have a backup just need to get a new drive for the working copy. Tks1 point

I’m not a programmer, but can’t Emby recognize that the new file has the same metadata as a file that already exists (like IMDB ID or movie name) and simply not delete it from the database- just update its file path and treat everything else the same?1 point
-
You should probably run the Scan Metadata Folder task after cleaning up the empty folders, just in case.1 point

Agreed. I understand why this does not happen currently, but I don’t understand why it has to be this way. Why can’t the collections a film is in be noted in providerid (along with watch time)? Why doesn’t Emby work to save certain data points between file upgrades and not others? I’m really struggling to understand why Emby cannot be updated to remember datapoints like this one. Doesn’t it seem bizarre that Emby would delete a movie from its database if it’s being replaced with the same film but a slightly different file? Surely, Emby could be programmed to recognize this When you upgrade a movie on Plex- it just works. All elements of the film stay exactly the same (except that the file has changed quality). If it’s possible with Plex, then it isn’t magic, and Emby can surely do it too.1 point

You should be able to create a PKCS#12 (or pfx) as long as you have the key and certificate. I should probably refresh my self signed certificate because I did this 6 years ago but something like this should work. openssl pkcs12 -export -out domain.name.pfx -inkey domain.name.key -in domain.name.crt1 point

Indeed. The user running the script owns the files. And if that user isn't emby then access might be restricted unless other measures were taken to make sure emby does have access, like the permissions script or ACLs.1 point

Solved. Thanks to Lessaj providing the specific version of emby-ffmpeg on centos, I figured out the file name to download for Arch/Manjaro: wget https://mediabrowser.github.io/embytools/emby-ffmpeg-bin-2023_06_25-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst sudo pacman -U emby-ffmpeg-bin-2023_06_25-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst This provided the emby ffmpeg 5.1 and transcoding works again.1 point
-
Thanks for the additional info, Lessaj. It appears there's something odd with the Arch/Manjaro repos. I'll pursue this and try to manually update the ffmpeg package and hope for the best. You've pointed me in the right direction! Update: I downloaded the emby-ffmpeg package from the Arch repos. It's still at 5.0.0. @softworkzIs there a way for Arch/Manjaro users to get Emby's set of 5.1 files (ffmpeg/ffdetect/ffprobe)? About 18 months ago, I went through this same issue. And funny I posted that this eventually would be updated.. and here we are. I1 point
-
Sorry I'm not familiar with running it on Manjaro since I run it on CentOS but it's likely similar. I'm not sure about it being in /usr/bin though, I only see emby-server there. It's in /opt/emby-server/bin/ on my system, emby-ffmpeg is a script that sets up the variables need to call ffmpeg in this same directory. AFAIK it should be shipped with 4.8.1.0. I have a transcode log from Feb 18 that show the versions. head -200 ffmpeg-transcode-7e49d100-5b89-4529-be4f-4f3f0477e8ad_1.txt | egrep "Emby Server version|ffmpeg version" Emby Server version: 4.8.1.0 00:34:09.330 ffmpeg version 5.1-emby_2023_06_25 Copyright (c) 2000-2022 the FFmpeg developers and softworkz for Emby LLC I don't think removing the package would remove the parts related to your configuration but it's likely /var/lib/emby, so you could back that folder up just in case.1 point
-
It doesn't look like your ffmpeg got updated, it should be 5.1. I'd suggest removing the package, ensure /opt/emby-server is clear, and reinstall it. EDIT: Doesn't Manjaro use arch repos? It's already 4.8.3 there.1 point

Second post contains it You can see the emby-server side of this steps: About option 3 I keep it as simple as possible: Created a folder /tmp/emby-test/ chmod 777 /tmp/emby-test Created a new library pointing to that empty folder add a movie file to /tmp/emby-test chmod 777 the movie file After this I was expecting thee movie to appear in emby, but nothing happened. settings > library > scan button pressed and the movie appears, I can play and I also can remove it using emby app1 point

I bought one of these, and wow, I just love it. Dirt cheap, just pop in any hard disk, and windows auto-detects and auto-mounts the drive, no drivers necessary. Comes with a usb cable that has both usb-c and usb-a connections, so you can backup older computers too. Hi all, If you look back in this thread you will see Luke mentioned we are very interested in it for the feature. You'll see this changed 5 months ago to being planned for future updates. You will normally not see a specific commitment of a timeframe in our forums since priorities and schedules can change at any time due to any number of reasons. Often times you will not know about a feature until it hits beta or if one of the staff posts about it before release usually with a beta following very shortly. Historically, I think you'll find a planned or committed to future update typically has been 2 or 3 releases out depending on how you count the releases. We just rolled out a major version of Emby Server. The next version has likely been been planned for, likely since at least the starting development of the currently released server. So I'd guess it would be the version after next give or take a version. But to answer your question directly, yes it would still be planned for a future update as Luke posted in the quoted message.1 point

Not even close. To be fair, I put the m3u together myself from a few different sources. The XML file comes from the epg_ripper source. It has a ton of listings, but they are in no particular order. By just scrolling up and down I found a few channels at the cost of my eyes threatening to fall out. When you actually manage to map a channel the guide data seems to be correct, it's just miserable going through all of these one line at a time to find the right channel and it possibly not even being there, or thinking you may have missed it.1 point
-
I think you are missing the whole point of us that are complaining about the change here. I and others i know do not use emby to manage any of the content, only to watch and view and see whats up next as a user experience. I would be pretty surprised to find out many or any people use emby to manage their content once they have a decent collection. Emby is not really for managing content except for the meta data and maybe grabbing artwork. There are other apps that are free that are great for that. I have Movies, TV Shows, Audio books, Home photos and videos, music, live TV and recordings. Now it does manage recordings and does a pretty good job there. But all the rest are managed by other software, including subtitles. If someone does not like the feature or you feel like its a performance issue, then turn it off for your environment, or if you see it for a admin feature then fine, use it that way. The big deal was it was a feature several people like and we had for a long time and it was "taken away", yes you can dig for it and yes its going to be in the meta data browser but its not the same. As i mentioned earlier, i have users that will never find that and obviously those users will not have access to the statistics plugin or the metadata browser. So for us all we can do is voice our opinion on why we want it and think it needs to come back, and if we cant convince emby to revert then i guess we will have to make a plugin if possible to bring it back, or go to another platform.1 point
