Unless something has changed in the last couple years, I can assure you my Apple TV wouldn't play something from the server in my own house when the Plex service went down. And it wasn't that rare. The questions, I'm sure, have been debated endlessly elsewhere... But the over-arching theme with Plex is that it isn't one decision that someone may disagree with, it's the general direction of everything they do. Adding all the "free" content you could get elsewhere with countless other services (Pluto, Crackle) intermingled with your own content is a move towards becoming a streaming service... Tracking your log-ins through their service, rather than locally on your own network is a way to control access to content. That's important if you intend to charge for premium content down the road... Unless it has changed since I quit it, you couldn't even delete the play history of a user/e-mail address that you previously allowed to use your server. Now why keep play history of your sisters e-mail address indefinitely? Just more tracking data to market and sell.... Plex is moving from being a media server, to a streaming service that is nice enough to allow you to include your own media. No thanks. I'm all for these services making a buck... I like Emby... I want them to make a buck too. They do good work, they are always responsive to issues and even development requests for features... They should be paid for that. But I don't want another service tracking me, especially inside my own house. For me, every decision Plex was making was going in the wrong direction on that front...5 points

From a very brief look, it's an excellent step in the right direction. Thanks Emby!3 points

This is a great summary of why people are migrating away from Plex. The goal is to get people to see that Emby as a solid and viable solution to switch to.2 points

Synology. Config is exactly as in the OP, except I've put in my domain, the location of my certs, etc. And changed the HTTP2 bit, obviously. The conf file must be the correct one, because changing the HTTP2 bit fixed that error and shifted to generating a different error. EDIT: Okay, I'm a dumbass. The config generates both an emby.log and an error.log, and after fixing the error.log issue it moved right on to complaining about emby.log and I didn't notice the difference. I've fixed both, and now it's complaining that it can't bind to 0.0.0.0:443 because the address is already in use.2 points

Never had time to try the new 4.8 but after looking at the screenshot above, i want to say a big THANK YOU for Emby's team ! Thanks for taking this into consideration and implement a great solution ! This makes browsing by genre simply SUPERB !2 points

@GrimReaperI'm seeing this has now been updated in latest beta (4.9.0.8) Thanks @Luke2 points

Thanks for the feedback. The reason we wait is because the Synology review process takes a long time, therefore it doesn't make sense to submit 4.8.0 to them when we know there will probably be a 4.8.1 a week later, 4.8, etc. So it's just a balance of choosing the right time.2 points

This is something I keep pushing on other social media platforms when people complain about this exact thing with Plex. It's important for others to know that their gripes with Plex can often be solved with Emby. Glad to hear a user of Emby thinking the same way!2 points

I believe a nice added feature is to have the ability to timeout partially watched shows automatically. Being able to set an expiration of resume point on titles. My kids love to watch videos but never seem to finish then, so they have a ton of titles that have resume points. What would be a nice addon would be the ability to either set the resume point to expire after X number of days. By default the resume point will be kept indefinitely. Adding in, let's say, "30" will then set all the resume points last set 30 days ago to expire and the resume point data be removed from the title for the user. This should be a global setting that applies to all users in the system. Wording of the feature can be different. Thanks, \ above11 point

Currently there're three tabs on the bottom left corner during playback: Info, Chapters and Cast&Crew. Is it possible to add an "Episode" tab, that displays all the episodes info(number and name) in the current season, and let you jump to the episode you want. It should work like the "Chapter" tab, except that it lets you choose episodes intead of chapters Youtube offers this functionality as a side bar, and I use it a lot. Hope that emby can have that too.1 point

Now convert media only support to choose codec and quality. Please add support more such as max & min bitrate, max resolution and copy subtitle. That can be great to manage medias1 point

It is too inconvenient to select the playback status via a filter between played and unplayed media. A quick selection (without via filter menu) would be desirable.1 point

This was implemented last year following the security incident - Emby already blocks failed login IP's after I believe 10 attempts for a peroid of time - thus preventing/slowing any possible brute force attempts. This is now in the 4.8 Release. see - https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/122020-48048-user-auth-brute-force-password-lockout-feedback/#comment-1286522 btw - updating this as @ebrsent somebody here for a new FR.1 point

We are going to need more details of the "roadblock" that you are facing, but in general it's just an API request to scan a particular library or multiple libraries:1 point

No, it will get backported at some point but I think the change comes with some degree of risk so I think it's best that it sit in the beta channel for a little while. Thanks.1 point

What looks strange? You should do is delete the wal and shm files as they should not exist for closed databases only open ones.1 point

Isn't it obvious? Any version running on Kodi 20 will not stop working out of the blue. At some point you cannot update to newer versions with Kodi 20.1 point

Guess I'm making it official FR: Could we please get parent TV show poster - or at least parent TV show thumb as it is done in Continue Watching Home Screen row - for TV episode playback session in Now Playing Dashboard section, as current implementation with episode thumb is neither informative nor visually appealing. I installed 4.7.14 on a Synology DS1520+ a week ago. Since then I've tried it on multiple device (fire TV, android TV, LG smart TV, etc.). I like it and bought the lifetime premier membership. I am looking forward to the upcoming 4.8.2 on Synology. I prefer to having the native app there rather than installing it manually. Please keep up the good work. I think this could become the best media server in the future.1 point

Luke the misconception a lot of people make is that the option in ATV is for allowing passthrough when actually it's designed to stop passthrough for those who don't want boxes like the Shield converting to PCM 2.0 and instead want the server to convert to AC3 5.11 point

Well boredom may have set in. After reading MrLinford's process of setting up the pre-requisite apps in docker. I decided to transform this into a LSIO docker-mod that will allow simply adding an environment variable to the container definition to have the creation of the container include the apps required. Almost all of this is entirely based on MrLinford's script, diced and sliced into parts that leverage LSIO's standardised structure for customising their containers and some added checks in place to ensure that it wont try and install things if they already are or its not a compatible base image. There is also an option to enable the BifTools stuff to be installed if you wish to use the BIF generator. https://github.com/SimCity/emby-mediainfo-plugin-prereq has all the details on how to use. Quick outline: Add the environment variable to the LSIO Emby container definition: DOCKER_MODS=ghcr.io/simcity/emby-mediainfo-plugin-prereq:latest Optionally, to be able to utilise BIF generator, also add: INCLUDE_BIFTOOL=TRUE Start container. If the container is already running, you will need to restart the container (not just restart emby) for the changes to apply. When container is up, it will also initialise with all the packages and files required for MediaInfo to work. In the settings for MediaInfo plugin, the locations are: /bin/mediainfo /bin/mkvpropedit /bin/biftool1 point

I just wanted to thank everyone that took the time to post questions and those who enjoyed the spirit behind this post. I’m going to lock this thread at the end of the day, but I’ve gone ahead and submitted the questions to @Lukeand @ebrfor answering. We will be sharing some blog posts that dive into these answers as they get answered. I for one am excited to see what they come share with us! Thank you again for taking the time to respond.1 point

Genres are attached to ID3 tag for GENRE in my view. If the track is not tagged, then it has no genre. You should just sort by artist for the tagged tracks in albums in genres view. Example for genre POP selected from list of available Genres: GENRES > POP > Madonna > (albums/tracks listed that have any tracks tagged with the genre, any tracks in that album not tagged are dropped from view) This can be implemented using a menu option for VIEW BY or SORT (and an option in settings for making a sticky view (persistence))1 point

I fully agree to this. It’s one of the Emby’s counter-intuitive things. In my case i expected to see ALL the music content shown in genre view, not ONLY albums. This means that if you have “singletons” not assigned to any album they aren’t displayed making the genre view unusable (since you can’t see all music on that genre … only albums) It just doesn’t make sense … Either have genre as a filter in other views like albums, artists, album artists etc. OR have those other “resources” as filters inside genre: artist, albums, songs etc.1 point
-
That's what I asked for originally but EBR made a big fuss about virtual views required. Emby git it right some releases then changed on belief that Spotifys UI must be right. It isn't in my opinion as a useless list of albums isn't what I want. Genre then artist then the albums listed. Only stuff that has the id3 tag for the genre would be included. If a view option it needs to be sticky too, so that you don't have to keep setting it. There is existing ui space for that under display options for library options.1 point
-
+1, I just found this thread after experiencing the same "why am I seeing albums, not artists?" question after tapping on a genre. However it's done under the covers, you might include an Album/Artist toggle at the top, along with the Play/Shuffle/Sort/Filter options.1 point

I have been recording TV shows and films Over the Air since 2010. My library if over 10,000 files. I have been using emby-server with the raspberry pi 4b since 2019. I have two of those server been use as personal video recorder with HDHomerun Extend tuners. I used the HDHomerun Extend to transcode the stream to H264, since transcoding could not be properly done real time on the raspberry pi. The servers are responsive, able to watch a show while it is been recorded and fast forward commercial. It can steam multiple files at the same time if no transcoding is required. Postprocessing is done remuxing the ts file to mp4 and running comskip for commercial detection. I use 2tb USB3 HDD. The servers are in different city in North America so the use a wireguard mesh network between the servers to have access to each other library and HDHomerun tuners. I got a raspberry pi 5 2 weeks ago. Quickly installed emby server on it. The server can software transcode 2 HD streams at the same time, this is a major improvement. I still use 2tb USB3 HDD with it, but a M.2 Hat is coming and it will be able to use a NVMe SSD. I was able to record 4 HD show at the same time with a HDHomerun quatro while watching one of them. The pi 5 make for a very low cost and efficient embyserver for personnal use. I will be upgrading the raspberry pi 4 servers to the raspberry pi 5. Hope this help.1 point

I managed to figure out a solution. When on the Orange/Black screen: Press crtl + alt + f1 to get to the terminal startx This starts emby theater up. After the initial time, it starts up fine from boot.1 point

The trouble I am finding, is that MUSIC library **DID** used to sort by Artist under Genres and was changed without any warning. Family really don't like the view by ALBUMS as artists are listed all over the place in a huge list (if large library). I agree with what you said though, in that not everyone will agree on ONE view, so hence my idea of a sticky option of "Sort by Artist", "Sort by Album" options. It would then work for Music/Music Videos/Audiobook libraries.1 point
-
And this view would work for Music, Music Videos and Audiobooks because they all utilise the same underlying embedded ID3v2 tags, namely ALBUMS, ARTIST and GENRE. Emby actually processes embedded data properly. It's just the current view shown when selecting genre option. TV Library - genres expect to yield the programme titles then the Season/Series/Specials. Because its logical!1 point
