I think you are missing the whole point of us that are complaining about the change here. I and others i know do not use emby to manage any of the content, only to watch and view and see whats up next as a user experience. I would be pretty surprised to find out many or any people use emby to manage their content once they have a decent collection. Emby is not really for managing content except for the meta data and maybe grabbing artwork. There are other apps that are free that are great for that. I have Movies, TV Shows, Audio books, Home photos and videos, music, live TV and recordings. Now it does manage recordings and does a pretty good job there. But all the rest are managed by other software, including subtitles. If someone does not like the feature or you feel like its a performance issue, then turn it off for your environment, or if you see it for a admin feature then fine, use it that way. The big deal was it was a feature several people like and we had for a long time and it was "taken away", yes you can dig for it and yes its going to be in the meta data browser but its not the same. As i mentioned earlier, i have users that will never find that and obviously those users will not have access to the statistics plugin or the metadata browser. So for us all we can do is voice our opinion on why we want it and think it needs to come back, and if we cant convince emby to revert then i guess we will have to make a plugin if possible to bring it back, or go to another platform.3 points

If development were to ever cease someday and any Premiere license check servers go offline, does the team have a plan? Would you consider pushing out an update that allowed Emby Premiere features (ie. hardware transcoding) to work fully offline?3 points

I would interested to know the actual split of time spent by the core dev's on forum duties vs actual development. On a small team, I get resources need to multi-task and I'm also grateful that the core Dev's do get involved on the forum and 'show their face' - but I do wonder if more of their precious time could be better used on product/feature delivery, rather than answering repeat and already answered questions in a forum.3 points

I had a similar moment recently. I was out running errands and found myself waiting in the car with some time to kill. Remembering an old friend's recommendation, I decided to check out Emby on my phone. Before I knew it, I was immersed in a film, just like you! It's wild how we can access our favorite movies from practically anywhere nowadays.3 points

I get that: I'm saying the easier option is to change your workflow a little bit. Sign into your admin account on your phone checking 'remember me', then select 'switch users' and sign into your regular account as well, also checking 'remember me'. You can now switch between the two with one button, no password entry. Watch media only with the regular account; and when you've gotta perform admin tasks, switch users. This is the menu you get when tapping your usr icon in the top right, with a second user signed in (user: 'Test') Just tapping 'test' immediately signs me into that user.2 points

Given the time to do so - do members of the emby team use their own product in the real world ? If yes, how do they use it ? (mainly TV show catch up or movies ?) Do they have any features which are missing and they would like to see ? Do any of the core emby team use any 3rd party plugins ? If yes, which ones and why ? How is new beta functionality success measured ? If nobody reports an issue - does that mean it's good, or maybe nobody is using it ? How do you know ?2 points

@softworkz re-posting as these were actual questions. If you disagree, please PM reason Is the Emby dev team going to adopt an Agile framework for development? Will Emby consider moving to a quicker release cadence with a more limited set of development goals for each cycle? In working with software development practices, I have seen how a quarterly release cycle (point release, not major version) would be well received by the community as well as benefit the developers ability to focus on a specific set of enhancements and fixes.2 points

We have split-off all non-question posts into this conversation. Please continue here. Only posts with real questions are allowed in the original topic from now on. Thanks for your understanding.2 points

You have two kinds of people on the forums enough to notice this thread... people frustrated with immediate issues they're having, or people frustrated with longer term issues/requests/the state of Emby and its development. Right or wrong, these people are kinda fixated on these things and feel like every second not talking about it is another second the Emby team is let off the hook, and a Q&A really just opens the door for more of it. I'm having a hard time coming up with a question that I feel like the team might actually be comfortable answering knowing the pipeline, development and basically questions about Emby as a whole are off the table lol... this is something I'm genuinely curious about though... If development were to ever cease someday and any Premiere license check servers go offline, does the team have a plan? Would you consider pushing out an update that allowed Emby Premiere features (ie. hardware transcoding) to work fully offline?2 points

You seem to be VERY invested, lol. Then why are you here? My time is valuable and I wouldn’t waste it on forums for products I don’t use. You’re hilarious2 points

We have put limits in place with the express purpose of making it harder for these guys to operate with us but we don't spend our valuable time trying to chase them down nor do we collect the kind of information that would make that easy. My point above was that your statement - which you have made multiple times in the past - was and is blatantly false and you had no foundation with which to make such an assertion. We actually do the opposite in that we actively refuse money these guys try to give us for larger licenses.2 points

If you can’t come up with some specifics on how to help Emby team to stop said abuse, why mention it at all? You seem to be coming across as bitter and negative, imo. And, kinda feels like you ARE contributing “nothing” to what was meant to be a positive and informative thread.2 points

My impression from this conversation is that once road-map subjects are off the table, users don't have many questions they want to ask...2 points

In setting up a user account for a child I've employed the parental controls functions on restricted library access. The issue is that they cannot see a great deal of the children's movies because of the ratings systems of differing countries etc, whereas a few TV Shows are probably inappropriate but pass through. Could you consider implementing a per library access by rating for parental controls instead of a blanket rating for the user? Thank you.1 point

Hi there, I am using Emby for years now and am very fond of it. I have an Emby Server set up on my local network can can easily access it from within my network as well from outside. I do not use Emby Connect, I connect to the servers manually (i.e. by entering the address and portnumber of the server). Everything is working like a charm ... and it's been doing so for years now. I bought an Emby Premium lifetime subscription very early on (first and foremost to support this great software) and am still very happy that I did so. Why am I telling you this? Because I want to make clear that I am a longtime user who really likes this software and wants to continue using it. But recently I came across a behaviour of Emby Theater which I personally find a little disturbing. Let me explain: In a move to enhance my personal cyber security I recently installed Safings Portmaster Firewall on my devices (one laptop and one desktop, both running linux). Emby Theater for Linux is installed on both devices and everything works fine but when I inspected the network traffic generated by Emby Theater I realized that every time it starts up it is initiating an outgoing connection to tv.emby.media (resolved as an IP located in the US). This connection is aparently encrypted (using port 443). I did not yet test this when connecting while being away from home, but when connecting from within my local network Emby Theater definitely behaves like this every single time. I was a little suprised and somewhat concerned about that since the whole Emby stuff is supposed to exclusively run on my own devices an within my own infrastructure (at least while being in my local network). Since I'm not using Emby Connect it should not connect to any servers other than my owns (even when I'm not at home). So I came up with the conclusion to just block access to tv.emby.media for the Emby Theater app. But once I did the app won't start up anymore. All I get is a black screen (or rather a black window without anything showing in it). The App is not exactly crashed (I can anytime just close it using ALT + F4), it's just not starting up completely. As soon as I remove the block from tv.emby.media the app starts up normally and works perfectly. So my conclusion is that for whatever reason the Emby Theater App (at least the current version 3.0.19 for Linux) needs to contact tv.emby.media upon startup to work. I don't know why this is the case but I'm somewhat concerned about that. An App which is handling private data (and I consider my movies, musik and especially my pictures private data) should never contact some server without consent from the user. And if the user does not consent it should still work normally without contacting that server (there are after all some scenarios where such a contact is just not possible, e.g. if the ISPs connection is down). So please dear Emby team I would like to know why Emby Theater is behaving like this, or better even, I would like to simply have this behaviour removed from the app completely. Many thanks Daniel1 point

I would echo some of these points. I and others have commented on the beta process, and while not expecting a detailed answer, I would like to know that these comments were taken on board. I also was very surprised how the 4.8 release dropped, 2 years of development without, as far as I could see, much done to prepare the userbase for the wave of changes that were coming. Normally there would be release notes with major changes, what to look out for, etc etc. It seems like the whole thing was simply dropped onto the unsuspecting users. I would be very interested to know if Emby will look at MPEG-DASH On a personal note, I have two things from my personal wishlist I would like sound extras to again be playable, as they were in 4.7 but no longer are in 4.8, already noted by someone else and I plus-oned it I would like a way to handle TV episodes that are a single episode in TVDB but split into multiple episodes in my library PS I wasn't going to add this but now I will even though I suspect it doesn't add anything for now Emby and all these systems are basically 3 components Capture Library Management Playback How much separation is possible between these, with standardisation of the interfaces, and longer term virtualisation?1 point

yes, I agree. Just wanted to provide a work around (that has worked for me) for folk.1 point

Hi i have the exact same issue on my 2 emby servers. Since i have updated to 4.8.1 . I’m running the android app (no tv) and trakt is not aware i watch anything. I have generated new pins several times and it just don’t work anymore1 point
-
@LukeNo problem, this is what I did, just wanted confirmation that it was a normal check and that value was always a proper one to use. When you have time the following is still an issue, dashboard hides when starting a new session, and how to manage fake sessions to display media played from external cache that still needs to be seen on dashboard so not really offline playback, just playback not from the server directly but online.1 point

Access time, by definition, is updated whenever a file is accessed (read or write) so Emby doing a ffprobe will update the time.1 point

HI, Emby Connect is a purely optional feature. You are not required to use it if you don't want to. What ebr was saying was that one user asked for a pin code sign in process for TV's, and that's exactly what the Emby Connect feature does.1 point

Same issue as reported here? It will definitely help to go through the list in the shared link once and see if any current regexes used for matching need to be expanded upon or improved because Sonarr, being meant for media management, has gone through a lot of revisions and testing for such stuff.1 point

Yeah it would seem that I tried to do too much at once (between changing library config for recordings and removing old series recordings configs and removing tuners and reading then) if I had done each step one at a time and let them finish I probably would have been fine. It is working now.1 point

That's just the download. The next step is to run the dpkg command to install: https://emby.media/linux-server.html1 point

It doesn't need to be the whole file, just a snippet for testing. You can use this guide to help extract a small clip that you can PM to Luke1 point

Hi, we need to know exactly what you did in the user interface, because I think there are some misunderstanding here. This sounds like you added a library and the server started scanning. It's not uploading anything, just scanning your files.1 point

Got it, I append English region code after every Chinese library name to do workaround. Now it's working. Thx.1 point

Will we still experience a wave of updates across all systems in 2024 so that we are visually and functionally at the same level on the different systems? Will sideloading on Android come to an end? Will the metadata manager be expanded and become a server helper, e.g. to tidy up metadata, move it and identify missing content? Will we see a visual reboot of the IOS app? Or will the apps be visually adapted again? Will there be a customisable newsletter so that you can recommend films to yourself and your family? Will the direct play functionality be expanded further? Will CoverArt be integrated into Core as standard? Will IntroSkip be further developed and better implemented? Will there be a better source for trailers so that we can save them offline as well as country-specific? An alternative would be to choose an online provider, but then you run the risk that they will no longer exist at some point. I left out all my opinions and just wrote down what I could think of. Best regards seger1 point

Or split-off all non-questions from here into a separate conversation.1 point

As I mentioned in the original post, the idea behind this was to gather a list of questions that people are interested in hearing about. The only thing that was off the table was roadmap questions. Emby is a media server with many function so there should definitely be more questions than just roadmap. It’s being used daily and people aren’t just waiting for future updates. With that being said, we do understand the interest in knowing what is coming too. If you have issues with the Emby platform or a specific app, try posting in the proper forum. You may be more likely to get a helpful response. It seems lately that every positive post gets turned in to something that someone wants to complain about. While we understand that our product is not perfect, we believe we are the best in the industry and we strive to continue to improve. One of the ways we improve is by user feedback so we welcome both the positive and negative. Just please keep in mind the appropriate places for the feedback! In another day or so we will compile the list of questions for the Emby team to answer!1 point

Does that mean you'll finally stop nominating yourself as the voice of the people and leave? Getting real sick of reading 'nobody wants that' 'everyone want's this' like you're some ambassador of media server users.1 point

@serbandyou still have the dedicated Upcoming tab in your TV library. I think Missing and Upcoming are two different things, and many would object to seeing Unaired episodes in a missing list. For instance, it's hard to really call it missing if it hasn't aired yet and isn't even possible to get.1 point
-
Thanks, guys I am aware of the 3 dot thing, but for some reason, the reports plugin is also not working. These two issues combined are making it a little difficult to review what is missing. I think the old way was better, so you can see missing ones and upcoming ones within the series without pressing that button I don't even think it's available on the Apple TV which we all use primarily, I don't use a browser other than for administration. I use that function all the time and I am sad to see it go. It's hitting me more since it has been gone so long. I have been waiting for the update, but I don't have a way to figure it out while we wait for it. I also don't know of any performance issues with emby and I have a 63TB server. Hopefully, it can be a toggle in the future. Thank you1 point

It's possible that the network on your PC is actually 'Public' (the default, depending on how you answered the Windows 10 setup questions..) - in which case, you probably want to change that ASAP to 'Private'.. Have a look here on how and why .. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/6815-set-network-location-private-public-windows-10-a.html1 point
