EMBY SERVER 4.8.1 IS NOW LIVE WITH LOTS OF NEW FEATURES AND IMPROVEMENTS Emby Server 4.8 has been rolling out to various platforms over the past week or so. This upgrade in particular is packed with a lot of new features, improvements and fixes. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing multiple blog posts to share some of the exciting new functionality that 4.8 brings to Emby and give you a more in-depth look into the features. Today’s blog will focus on two new features: PROFILE PINS With Emby 4.8 you now have the ability to set individual profile PINs. This new PIN replaces the old local network only PIN that existed prior to this release. It is more flexible (works both locally and remotely) and more secure. This new PIN is very useful if you have devices in your home that are shared by multiple users. As an example you may want to put a PIN on your profile so kids in your home can’t just click on your profile and view all of the same media but still allow your kids to freely switch between their profiles on the same device. NOTE: All users (local and remote) must authenticate ONCE per device. Once this initial authentication is done, that user will be remembered on that device and won't require password entry again unless signed out. PLAYLIST SHARING CONTROL Another great feature of 4.8 is the ability to designate exactly what other Emby users you share playlists with. Prior to 4.8, any playlist that was created was available to everyone on your Emby server. Now they’re set up for individual users. When you first create a playlist, that playlist is private to just you. If you wish you can then share it with any user that you would like via the "Modify Collaboration" option. You are able to set it up so that different users have read only access or have view and edit access to the playlist. Please keep in mind that this is only for playlists that were created after the upgrade to 4.8. Playlists created prior to this release will not have this functionality. They would have to be re-created to gain it. NOTE: In order to utilize this feature, you must first grant each user that you want to be able to create shared playlists the ability to share content from the user settings on the dashboard. You can see from the image below that it is simply a checkmark on the settings page. Once that is checked, it is as simple as creating a new playlist and then either right clicking on the playlist or clicking on the “...” menu and clicking on manage collaboration. From there you can easily choose which user you want to share the playlist with and what level of access they have. Stay tuned for a new blog post in the coming days that highlights some of the other awesome and new features of Emby 4.8! For now, we have listed below all the improvements and fixes that were included in 4.8. We as a team are excited to share all of these great new additions with you and hope you’re enjoying the update to Emby just as much as we are! ADDITIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS Add new profile pin feature. I think you guys are over emphasising (suggesting) the PIN feature. Some people just want a passwordless log in experience on their local networks. All you need to tell people is that all clients should now remember your password so you don't have to enter it every time, just the first time. The PIN is an optional feature you can add to your login to add a barrier to other users of your household from accessing your account, add a PIN like 1234 to stop kids using your parent account etc.5 points

Would tend to agree. This doc is a little confusing imho ... and really not helping matters ... https://emby.media/support/articles/Passwords.html You don't even need to mention the word PIN in the password section - but you do need to emphasise that you just need to login once and make it clear that if you do not logout, then you never need to enter a password again... That will satisfy the majority of these users. On another section after saying the above - maybe labelled as 'Optional Protection on your account' THEN specify that you can use a PIN - but it's then clear it's Optional. I expect most users that previously had no passwords, will simply not care about this - and will stop reading... Maybe even put it as a seperate document that you need to click on to get to ..2 points

Except that's not true: the server is also able to report that you are close to your limit. I don't understand why you can't use the premier key itself to authenticate a request that responds with how many devices are currently used.2 points

ok, so I tried this and it does work to close the app and go back in, but that was also the case when you switched apps. When you restart the tv (either by remote or loss of power) you are back to the hanging logo screen on startup. (good to know that you can actually close the app this way, didn't know this)2 points

You wont save any space, the files are already compressed. Compressing x264 with 7z results in a slightly larger filesize that the original, at best you would save a tiny amount of space while requiring more power to decompress the file before playing it.2 points

Hey there guys, I would really, really love to see this too. I've always preferred Emby over Plex, but an essential feature of Plex indeed is Watch together. Hell, even Jellyfin has SyncPlay - and we are better than Jellyfin, aren't we? The only reason some of my user's stay on my Plex server, that I run parallel to Emby, is Plex' Watch Together. It's essential for many people, which don't have the opportunity to watch together in persona - or maybe want to watch something together in the same home, but on different devices for convenience. My question would be as well, why there hasn't been any statement or progress update regarding one of Emby's most desired featured (When I'm looking across the feature request threads). Would be very, very huge to have that on Emby as well2 points

I'm a plex life time member, but I have been using Emby for over six years continuously, but there is a feature which I have always thought is missing in Emby which I would like and encourage the developer to consider including especially in this dispensation where families can social or commingle due to COVID 19. Today, I received a notification from Plex about it new feature titled Watch together you can read about it here https://support.plex.tv/articles/watch-together/ The feature allows friends and families at distance to watch same movies together instantly, you simply invite all your buddy, once they signed to the system which can be seeing in the server then play and pause as needed, this I think is cool feature should be added to emby. Let's here your though if Emby developer should consider adding this feature to our beloved Emby Media https://www.bing.com/news/search?q=Plex+Watch+Together&qpvt=plex+watch+together&FORM=EWRE1 point

I'd really like to have 2 Factor Authentication added to the login screen. It's just this (optional) extra layer of security to help secure the server (which, especially if people use camera uploads) contains pretty private data. There are for every type of programming language quite a few libraries available, so implementation on a server shouldn't be too hard to realise1 point

Since we can now detect end credits, or manually add them in other cases, it would be nice to see this, rather than an automatic percentage/time remaining, trigger the "next episode" popup and decide whether an episode is resumable or not. Even better if it could expand to movies for the latter point.1 point

Would be nice if the server could serve a custom logo to the clients, i.e replace the emby logo with something relevent to the server. This would look really neat.1 point

Is it possible to have a QR code to scan with your phone when needing to add the PIN for Emby Connect? That way, when you need to login to your Emby Connect, you can just scan that with your phone. Then it takes you to the login page so you can add the PIN it gives you? That would be awesome to do instead of having to type out/copy the entire URL. Thanks for reading. ( I did search if this request already existed and nothing came up).1 point

While Emby already has recommendations built in based on previously watched items I find they are not all that helpful. They seem to be based on genre only, for example, because you watched a comedy here are other comedies in your library. I do like how the also directed by/appear in recommendations work though. What would be great is if Emby could incorporate Trakt's recommendations as they are much more sophisticated. Trakt's recommendations are not only based off of what you have previously watched but also what your Trakt friends and other Trakt users have watched. It takes user ratings and trending/popular media into account. Ideally Emby would include full Trakt integration allowing users to rate media after watching, view lists and recommendations, and view upcoming media all from within Emby but for now I think recommendations would be a nice addition. Trakt has the potential to give Emby that community feel and allow users to discover new media, find something to watch, and recommend media to other users. http://docs.trakt.apiary.io/#reference/recommendations1 point

Thanks in advance. For real, I'm not quite sure what happened. I chose the option to start the next episode instead of finishing the end credits, then chose the option to skip the into. After doing that, it seems like it was playing the audio and video from the correct episode and the audio and from the previous episode. I think. Could have been 2 instances of the same episode playing only the instance with video was playing after the intro and the instance without a visible video element may have been playing from the beginning of the episode. Thought you may like to know. Also, I just upgraded to the 4.8.1.0 version. Playback was on a Mi-Box S via Emby for Android TV. Thank you for an awesome server, and for all your hard work! embyserver (2).txt ffmpeg-remux-89402bcb-4ebf-436d-b9d3-23d63c0d0dfc_1.txt1 point

Hey there guys, in my opinion Emby is the best option to host a personal media server and I think many might agree, that one of it's outstanding features is the performance in terms of streaming. Also, Emby doesn't have as much bloatware, which i.e. Plex does. It's not as fancy or probably not visually as appealing as Plex, but it has most of the features that really matter, rather than features that nobody needs or uses. However, I think one big flaw is the current (Not so current, eh?) state of the music library, its performance and its features. Please read the following with knowing that it's a subjective point of view, but there might be others agreeing. While Plex music libraries probably evolved into the probably best music experience for audiophiles, Emby's music experience is several quantum leaps behind. Things that would drastically improve the music experience on Emby - still very subjective - would be: - Improve metadata matching. Large music libraries (50.000 songs and above) feel the real pain of 20-35% of artists not being matched correctly or rather not at all - Music player overhaul. The player looks clunky, outdated, is featureless and even worse: Even lacks essential rudimental features almost every music player has since 2015. Sidenote and not to trigger anybody, but to be honest it reminds me of a visually less appealing version of Winamp from 2002. Features like "smart shuffle", "accoustical analysis", "smart(er) playlists" or at least "smart suggestions" is just a quick idea of features it could have. While Plex has introduced AI into their standard repertoire, Emby doesn't have a "repeat 1 song" feature in their music player web app... - Media presentation rework. Rather than throwing everything into one clotted spot (like albums at once in 1 overview, songs at once in 1 overview), differentiate between Albums, Compilations, Live Albums, Singles, etc. as I proposed here Please consider this as one of the bigger feature requests, but over all I'm still very happy with Emby. It's outperforming others in most areas, but the state of music libraries - and I'm talking about libs with more than 100 albums - is my biggest arch enemy and which is the only reason I keep my music on Plex exclusively without creating a music library on Emby. I'm quite sure there's a bunch of Embynauts that potentially would agree with me. And if not, it's just me Thank you for all the hard work over the past decades, which always dragged me back to Emby, coming to find that it might lack one or two things, but is still the best option compared to the competition.1 point

Non-compressed spanned RAR makes sense because that is how scene releases are done. Because most FTP servers do not support resume. It is entirely possible to stream from RAR files. Doing ZIP is just insanely ridiculous. How would you stream from compressed zip archives? Why on Earth would you zip compressed video files? To play the zip it would need to extract it to a temporary location on the hard drive. Then it just winds up playing the same video file it would've in the first place. You just add time before you can watch doing this. I enjoy threads like this. They are like roller coasters and entertaining.1 point

Completely different data types, roms aren't already compressed, videos are. Half the roms in those packs are also mostly empty space already (ie 600mb CD roms for games a fraction of that size).1 point

ROMS are a completely, totally, DIFFERENT object than video. Please educate yourself before making another post.1 point

I suspect you've been taken in by a prank video or haven't actually checked your file sizes before and after, but compression just doesn't work like that. If a general purpose compression algorithm like zip, designed mostly for text data, could so easily compress video files that are already heavily compressed by an algorithm specifically designed for for video to half the size, then we would be using it everywhere and companies wouldn't spend decades designing new video codecs.1 point

A bonus of this clean install and smaller size - the emby full backup takes just over 10 minutes. Thats NVME to different NVME. This is also evident in my unraid appdata backup weekly process. Means much lower outage time while docker is stopped, backed up and restarted.1 point

My wife and I are both running Motorola Moto G Stylus 5g with 6GB of RAM on Android 12, though they're not identical as they both seem to have different carrier flavors of android (hers is unlocked tmobile, mine is unlocked AT&T). My guess is it's definitely something related to the system trying to preserve memory. My phone seems to only do it when running maps with emby running in the background, whereas my wife's phone tends to just stop playing at random if you don't have emby actively open and in focus. After going down a google rabbit hole, this is a common complaint in android killing "background apps" that it deems unnecessary. Unfortunately most solutions seem to be above my skillset to edit the android system setting. I have disabled "Adaptive Battery" under settings >> battery on my phone to see if that makes a measurable difference, will report back here in a week or so.1 point

If this is not the stable version, howcome it was automatically installed via the stable repo on all my clients? Uninstalling and reinstalling via the stable repo kept reinstalling this version I've had sync issues with. I've had to manually downgrade to "plugin.video.emby-next-gen-9.4.10.zip" as per this post...1 point

Hi, I know you want logs, just not sure where, Emby Server logs or something from a Kodi client so thought to pose the issue first. I've done the usual local database reseting, restarting Emby server etc but nothing seemed to fix syncing, it kept getting stuck after it all of a sudden popped up on my kodi client saying : "Final Warning Complete database reset is required, if you decline please stop here and manually downgrade to a previous version." Same issue on multiple kodi clients too. However, I have found this... plugin.video.emby-next-gen-9.4.10.zip > SYNCS FINE after a local database reset plugin.video.emby-next-gen-9.4.11.zip > GETS STUCK during a local database reset (seems to get further than v12 before freezing) plugin.video.emby-next-gen-9.4.12.zip > GET STUCK during a local database reset Not sure what Emby Next Gen addon I was on before it upgraded and broke, presumably v8 since it wanted a complete database reset? However as above, it looks like something broke in v11 onwards. Currently I've settled on manually installing plugin.video.emby-next-gen-9.4.10.zip addon from zip file and not taking from (what I thought was) the stable repo as that only installs plugin.video.emby-next-gen-9.4.12.zip. Update: Hey all, just thought I would put out a little update, there was quite a major change to the way v4.8 Emby frontend handles loading scripts and the like, so after much frustration (and help from @Luke) I can proudly say that I have the backend and frontend working with Emby 4.8. I have noticed one or two small issues I still need to address and would like to do some more testing to make sure all is well, don’t wanna break everyone’s stuff. I’ll drop a new version in the coming days if all goes well.1 point

you should add skip credits like you have the skip into as there are lots of movies and shows that have scenes after the credits.1 point
