So to answer the question about Theatre - if you have the optional path set - AND you have a SMB connection/permissions etc - then Emby will Direct Play the file for REAL via SMB. It bypasses the emby server full stop for the media transfer. An older version of AndroidTV also allowed this, but sadly this has been removed with the newer Android OS version and the Emby Client has broken it even with the older Android OS as of a few beta's ago ... The only client left that uses real Direct Play (the same as what VLC, Kodi etc use) is Emby Theatre for Windows (not the store version) and possibly Emby Theatre for Unix (but unlikely to be SMB, maybe NFS ?) When working correctly - it will say 'FILE' in the stats for nerds - or you can see it in the file server OS as a direct connection from the CLIENT, not the emby SERVER.2 points

FYI Emby has just appeared on my Childs profile on her FireHD. Oddly only on one of the 2 devices I have.2 points

Are you actually checking within Emby Dashboard that items are DirectStreaming or relying only on your Grafana stats? If theye were, there would be ffmpeg-remux logs created for each session. And I've often seen same happening when using external tool - Playback Reporting plugin - reporting DirectStream when the item is DirectPlayed and surmised it must've been doing interpreting even DirectPlay over http as DirectStream in some circumstances. Speaking of, have just one like that currently:2 points

Yes, knowing why they're not direct playing is key and can reduce the number of items to convert if you still want to do that. There are also external tools for manual and automated media conversion. I convert all of my TV shows in Emby for playability on the lowest common devices. For movies I convert individually as needed but haven't been doing this lately since I upgraded to symmetrical internet service. One of the external tools, Tdarr, might give you the flexibility to only convert the media formats you know are causing problems. I don't use it but others in the community do and might have some info on how to setup filters to only convert the problematic media types.2 points

Would like to see the app to for HiSense TVs for my users, so +2 from me2 points

That is actually what I think the issue may be since I have no control over these in the emby app. The problem here is this is my parents' TV and 50 miles away and trying to get two people in the mid 80's to so anything about this over the phone is futile so I will have to check this out next time I go up to see them. I'll try to find out some info from them if I can. Thanks2 points

As requested for years elsewhere in these forums, the ability to download a usable playlist (the audio files and a modified m3u or whatever that points to those downloaded files where they now reside on the device) is what's needed to make the download function fully useful. I hope that's actually going to happen soon, please. Even without that functionality, using Emby via Android Auto doesn't make the "dowloaded" files directly accessible from the main Emby dashboard screen, which diminishes the benefit of downloading before a road trip to avoid heavy wireless data usage and/or dead zones. Please add "Downloaded files" as a main-screen selection button, in addition to "Recents," "Favorites," etc.1 point

Right, there could still be an issue with emojis, I'm just saying that it won't group them either unless there is an album artist. it's the combination of those two things that make the grouping unique.1 point

Sure. The store version must be behind. The USB version works.1 point

Alright, thanks for the info. I'll just hope for the best but sounds like everything should be fine.1 point

No issues with <premiered> tag for either Movies or TV Shows. Not that I know of.1 point

@akarshjaiswal In the field shown above in ebr's post have you set this to 192.168.1.42 then restarted Emby Server? @GrimReaperalso asked you some very valid questions above that we need answers to if you are still having an issue. Forget about Emby Connect for right now as we want to keep diagnosing the issue as simple as possible. Carlo1 point

Some more news on that. Seems like Dolby and emby always need a restart after installing emby. Had some tries, and Dolby Vision always appears after reboot, without reboot after reinstall no DV.1 point

Perfect, that would indicate it was a direct play and not a Direct Stream as the Direct Stream would have created a "remux" log file.1 point

Hi all, I sucessfully followed the guide (DS918+) but after a recent reboot the drives vanished, with a message: "A drive (Cache device 1, Cache device 2) cannot be used because it is incompatible with the current device. Please insert it in the original device to continue using the drive, or contact Synology Technical Support for assistance." I ran this script and restarted which has resolved it: https://github.com/007revad/Synology_HDD_db I've set it to run on startup as recommended.1 point

Adding one more information !!! For the long paths (after activating the guide from above) I was able to play the episodes even with the long paths, I had just to add the " \\?\ " before my library path ... Meaning / my example: \\?\E:\A\BOFURI - I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (2020)\BOFURI - I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense S2\Bofuri I Don't Want to Get Hurt so I'll Max Out My Defense - S02E02 - Maxing Defense, Level 5, and Level 6 (HDTV-720p).mkv Once again, BIG THANKS !!! PS: BTW VLC has having this open issue for ears and obviously doesn't care to resolve it trololoooooo1 point

Hello @gillmacca01You are asking for something very specialized. I will look into doing it. No promises. Vic1 point

I don't disagree but just way too many factors between the source files being all sorts of formats/codecs/bitrates and playback equipment being anything from a web browser, roku, firestick, android tv, ETC. Once the files are converted, they seem to work well ... not to say they don't work well, just a second or two delay when skipping forward or back. Just much more responsive after converting.1 point

You may be able to just add them in the Custom Header or possibly advanced options ? Try adding Range $http_range If-Range $http_if_range1 point

I will add that it's a flaw in design philosophy to associate Audiobooks with Podcasts so that each individual track has its own cover, it's own description, and can be reordered in the book with the drag of a mouse/finger. In addition, embedded chapters and separate tracks are displayed differently in the UI. I believe it to be a problem that the people designing the Audiobook portion of the app never actually listen to audiobooks, and so don't fully understand what the optimal solution should be. Case in point when one of the two primary people working on the project ask a user why they think it works poorly. That speaks to how little that dev uses it. You ask us for input on what changes we desire to have, but you don't understand why those changes are necessary. And certainly you can't come to the conclusion to add certain features on your own. What that all means is that the experience ends up being barebones. Audiobookshelf has only been in existence for a couple of years, and yet people have been asking both Emby and Plex, for quite a bit longer than that, for audiobook features that never get implemented. So Emby has had plenty of opportunity to be a contender in the audiobook space, but at this point it's not a good enough experience to use when a better one exists. The primary hurdle to adopting Audiobookshelf is that its primary install method is Docker. But now, because I use Docker, I have migrated my Emby install to it as well. I would give feedback if it was considered but it doesn't appear to be. I pointed out several problems almost a year ago, but they have not been addressed.1 point

I would personally try and find out why the media you currently have does not direct play in the first place. It could be a number of thngs - but especially for 4K, it's likely to be the source files you have exceed the capabilities of your playback equipment - be it from a network/wifi, device, video, audio or subtitle perspective.1 point
-
It depends on the conversion details. Existing media items that already meet the parameters will not be converted. So your bitrate, container type, audio and video codecs will be part of the decision. That said there is no way that I know of to skip existing media or defer the new conversion jobs to start at a scheduled time instead of immediately. These options have been requested/proposed before. I wouldn't take my chances converting such a large library at once or in large batches. It's a lot of system work and the jobs only run one item conversion at a time. There have also been problems in the past with conversions to copies (not replace original) getting stuck on an item and creating multiple versions, many more than the expected second version. This can eat up space quickly if not caught in time.1 point

From past experience, the safest way to do things like this is to make an option that is off by default. That way the new behavior can be an "opt in" for those that want it and it does not change anything for everyone else. Thanks, Brian.1 point

Ah that explains it. Why do they have a .org and .com though I thought .com was the new one and they moved everything there. Thanks for helping me solve this though! Thank you so much!1 point

The Emby plugin uses .org. You might have to create an account there as well. If you have VIP membership I don't know if you can transfer/duplicate an account from .com to .org. They do have a way to import in the other direction - .org to .com.1 point

Hi Paul, Thank you ones again for your reply and for your suggestions. I have checked my router for open ports and I can confirm that I had only port 5000 open for the synology nas. Maybe somehow this was related to work previously without 8096 to be open...I don't know and that's why I asked here. Anyway, as we established here. In oreder to use my remote access from now on, port 8096 has to be open. In regards to Plex... When I got my NAS everyone around me advised me to install Plex and I did. But I couldn't like it + tooo many problems. Then I heard about emby and me and my wife love it sins then. Without hesitation I paid for the "Emby Lifetime Premier" plan. It is near perfect for our needs, with few minor issues. I am impressed from the support and when I find some time, will make some screens and ask if these minor issues are fixable. Thanks again to you and Luke Regards, Valentin1 point

It would amazing, sometimes files aren’t synced perfectly, it’s probably the feature I miss most from plex. Being able to in the app advance or slow the audio.1 point

I have not seen this but if you can get to that computer on your local network then you should be able to access the server simply by using the ip address and port number. Something like (the numbers were changed to protect the innocent) http://19x.168.x.1xx:8xxx Where the first set of numbers is the ip address and the second (starting with the 8 ) is the port number being used. Just as a point of info I do not even look at the "local" field when I set up a server I just use ip+port to access the server from anywhere on my LAN.1 point

Hello, Good Morning from India. I wish to inform that I have never matched with MusicBrianz IDs. Matching with the MusicBrianz ids is very laborious process and of late their free software of Music Briaz Picard is not working properly and sometimes deleting the mp3 files altogether when we go in for matching ids and/or to get title, artist details where I know only track name and the singer name or album. I cleaned my data of music with mp3tag only and it is working perfectly well in Plex. May be one or two folders go astray and I just bring them into the fold by clubbing it with the same Album Artist. Therefore, my suggestion is to give provision of merging same Album Artist together at User level. This provision is very much available in Plex Free Version also. Also I observe that (just last night) the following: Suppose, there are 20 album folders of an Artist or Group kept in the main folder. When we add this, Emby is showing more than 20 albums, breaking the song sequences may be according to CDwise track numbers within a single album. This part also deserves to be looked into for user level merger, which is easier hassle free than matching with Musicbrianz ids. "what happened so that we can improve the automatic behavior" Anything could have happened because there are myriad of permutations and combinations in the millions of songs which have cross references also. By and Large mp3tag is more than enough for a casual music lover with a modicum of music collection. Hope you shall change the automatic behaviour to suit the cleaned data. This anyhow Emby is asking whether the songs are all structured or unstructured. There itself an option can be given have you matched with MusicBrianz Ids or cleaned the data with mp3tag and if the user chooses mp3tag, option to merge album artist may be available. For those very particular about matching ids with MusicBrianz can continue to have the present system without the provision of merging.1 point

At the top of this post, I'm being asked: "If any of these replies answered your question, please take a moment to click the 'Mark as solution' button on the post with the best answer. Marking posts as the solution will help other community members find answers to their questions quickly. Thank you for your help!" I truly appreciate all your help @Lukeand @cayarsand others, but none of the replies solved this issue. I love Emby, we've been with y'all for many years, back from the Media Browser days. But, this issue with the Apple TV and Emby live TV has not been resolved. Thankfully, the Apple TV is in a room that I don't use often, so really no big deal. Just want to close this out with MY solution - use the HDHomerun app when viewing Live TV on the Apple TV. I check with each Apple TV update, but still the same, deinterlacing and transcoding. My daily clients, Android Shields, play direct. Probably an Apple "thing". Anyway, all good, still love Emby! Just marking this solved from my point of view.1 point

Sorry, maybe you should instead ask yourself that not every single user is willing to read through every single post in every single thread they are involved in Not everybody has the time or is in the mood for that a 100% of the time. You have several options then. Either you repeat yourself for every single time and live with it as the thread starter/maintainer or you just start to ignore the repetitive questions and people will either start to read more thorughly or somebody else hops in and answers for you. But formulating patronizing posts instead is pretty much the worst option of all of those0 points
