DSM7 Upgrade for Emby.mkvEDIT: The instructions assume default Synology install volume of /volume1. If your location is different use that instead! This is based on the release version of Emby which at the time of writing/video creation was 4.6.3. The video will become dated so just use the latest DSM 6 Emby version from the website https://emby.media/synology-server.html. If you happen to be running a beta version update to the latest beta version before the DSM 7 update. The idea is to do any updates on DSM 6 first before installing DSM 7. Since the creation of the video Emby Server is now availing in the Emby Package store (release version) so you can install Emby on DSM 7 now from that. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attached is a quick video of upgrading DSM 6 to DSM 7 with Emby Updates. The video will show only browser items and not the PUTTY/SSH commands but everything done in browser is recorded. The SSH commands are included below. I converted this to MKV/H.265 to make it small enough to download and view offline. DMS7 Upgrade for Emby.mkv21.57 MB · 78 downloads Instructions used were: Download and have ready DSM 7 package for update. https://www.synology.com/en-us/DSM70 (I will be downloading both a virtualDSM 7 & for 920+) Download and have ready Emby Server 4.6.3 for both DSM 6 & DSM 7 https://emby.media/download.html - update Emby Server to current release of 4.6.3. - restart Emby Server and verify your on the latest release version. - uninstall Emby - update DSM to v7 - install Emby 4.6.3 (or same version that was running above (dsm7 version) - You can now install the DSM 7 version directly from the Synology Package store! (still on our website too) - stop Emby - remove emby_pkg user and video group - enable admin account if needed - enable ssh in Synology settings (Terminal & SSH menu) Not shown in video: - connect with Putty to Synology, login with admin user and get root rights with: sudo -i - copy files from old Emby share to new data location: cp -rv /volume1/Emby/* /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer - adjust owner from copied files: chown -R emby:emby /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer - close putty Shown again in video: - From Control Panel go to Shared Folder and edit each share that is used by Emby Server. Click the share, then EDIT, go to permission tab, select System internal user from drop down, grant emby user read/write access. - start Emby Notes: You can now disable the default admin account as well as SSH. You may also want to rename /volume1/Emby to /volume1/Emby6 as well. This will help make sure you don't have anything referencing the old directory. If you don't notice any issues in a week or two you can delete this old folder/share to free up space. DSM7 Upgrade for Emby.mkvDSM7 Upgrade for Emby.mkv4 points

Sometimes less is more. I disabled all the fancy stuff, just want simple and functional. Love how fast everything is! App loads quick, each menu loads quick, movie starts quick, can back out quick, can scroll quick, doesn't ask me stupid questions like who am I every time I load the app, or are you still watching? I find myself cussing at the tv when the stream providers pull that crap. Thank you Emby for a common sense approach. Perfect. I tried Jellyfin before coming to Emby, and well it didn't take me long to figure out Jellyfin was nowhere ready for prime time use. Calling it alpha to me was generous. I tried Plex before anything, I'm sure most people did, and it immediately annoyed me with all the crap it tosses in, fancy shmancy overload. I've found a home with Emby. The product is perfect for my needs, why keep looking? "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" I also love the community here, lots of cool people, and the devs are cool too. I just hope I don't annoy them too much LOL I do tend to be chatty when excited about something.4 points

I think most would be incredibly annoyed by toasts of server events constantly appearing on their TV screen but we'll monitor this request for support. Thanks.2 points

We've done that already Carlo - the Blu-ray Menu sound tracks that were provided were significantly lower in volume than the commercial version from the soundtrack album. This makes perfect sense to me - you don't want your Blu-Ray menu selection belting out the soundtrack - you want it in the background as a non intrusive sound. THIS is why they are a lower dB. However - this conflicts with what the Android TV App is trying to do (ie reducing 'normal' volume MP3 tracks to these nice 'background levels'. This is good.) and subsequently the result is the sound now has two levels of dB reduction - making it inaudible when the overall volume level is low (ie night time viewing) The two options to resolve are to use the soundtrack version (which most people would be using), or simply have an option in the Android client to not reduce the volume further. But please keep this function - as for me, it works perfectly for normal MP3's.2 points

Select all and shift multi-selection are planned for the future. thanks.2 points

I'd really like to have 2 Factor Authentication added to the login screen. It's just this (optional) extra layer of security to help secure the server (which, especially if people use camera uploads) contains pretty private data. There are for every type of programming language quite a few libraries available, so implementation on a server shouldn't be too hard to realise1 point

Hi. Can you please add an option in the settings to hide the "Media Info" section? When using emby on my phone, it pretty much takes more then half of the page. On top of that, not having it be showing, it would clean up the page. At least gives us that option to hide it. Thanks.1 point

Please read this post first. I was wondering if it would be possible to add something that would allow you to skip the intro to shows automatically while binge watching. When watching Netflix it does this for some shows, and im not sure if thats a feature of Netflix itself or a Chrome extension i use called "Flix Assist" but it would be a nice feature to have within Emby as well. and possibly even create a custom timed skip for specific shows1 point

My ability to create youtube videos has much to be desired. Putting my terrible video production abilities aside, I am putting together some tutorials on how to setup a development environment to create plugins for emby, on youtube. This is video 1. Like I say, I'm not very good at video creation, but since the world still doesn't seem to need to employ chefs full time, this seemed like a fun time to try it out.1 point

Like I said, we will monitor for support. One concern is that the amount of work involved here (mostly because it would lead to a rabbit hole of configuration that people would end up wanting) is likely to outweigh its utility for most folks. But, we'll see.1 point

To be fair i was reading the comments and whilst i didn't catch them all i did see a fair few about the constant pushing of certain type of ads on a device which primarily will be viewed in a family environment and in all fairness i have to agree with them somewhat, and before anyone jumps up and down thats from a perspective of a trans person. When i saw those banners myself i was like seriously not you and all?, Add to that the constant pushing of similar ads in. youtube and even i was getting annoyed with them, and you know full well they sure as hell aren't placing those adds in certain areas of the world because it would land them in the mire, so it's the holier-than thou approach that gets my back up personally Any how: I have to be honest i brought the device because it does offer the best complete package, i may be wrong but i never saw a spec sheet that stated it was and will stay an ad free device, and in this day and age you have to know full well if its powered by google, they will find a way to add an ad somewhere in it. However I know people use there devices differently, but to be fair i don't really notice the ad bar anymore because i just focus on the app row, as long as i can get to emby, youtube and tivimate quickly everything else on screen is just a blur to me as i pay it no attention what so ever, i never used the channel functions to be fair either so thats a less of a concern. The ad bar has kind of become like the punch out camera on me s21 ultra, or the tattoo on my arm, if i go looking for it i will see it but when im not hunting it out, it may as well not be there1 point

I haven’t tried jellyfin, I have no need to, I’m satisfied with how well Emby works for me across my devices, I also think it looks great, we all have different tastes. I also have a plex lifetime sub, I was plex user for many years before Emby, every so often i would try Emby because I didn’t like the way plex was going, gaining vulture capital money meant they had to make those investors happy, headline features (crap ware which would become abandon ware not long after) that nobody really wanted were a priority over fixing stuff, dubious data collection and so on. My Emby trials usually lasted a couple of hours, for various reasons, it didn’t look good, it was slow, it was slow to start playback and so on. That remained true for a number of years, and then it wasn’t. Emby, as far as function that I needed, surpassed emby. I ponied up the cash for a lifetime license and haven’t looked back. however…. I have a thread on here, it gets bumped by others every so often, and it centres around plex having its own standalone music player. I’ll admit, when plex first came up with it I was pissed they’d wasted time on a desktop player rather than fixing bugs, but boy did it make sense on a mobile platform. Still does. and that’s why (our collective family) music collection is served on Plex, because it’s a vastly superior experience to navigation around a video application that also plays music. I’ve tried to impress on the importance of having separate applications for video and music, but the Emby devs don’t see what the problem is with it being an all in one app. “You can create short cuts into the music section” is the general response. for me, that’s not a feasible compromise. For me, I could live with it, my wife and daughter, another story, my wife often asks me which button to press on the remote control, unless it’s a music app, that plus only music, and behaves in the same manner as every other music app (and Luke specifically cites Spotify as being some to big he regularly checks against) then it’s not going to work. I’m going to get a constant barrage of texts “I’m stuck in videos how do I get back to music” or “I can’t see any of my music”, shortly followed by my wife signing up for Apple Music because it works exactly how you’d expect a music player to work. And this is why my plex license is still in use today. The Emby devs have thus far been resolute in the face of my request, as a developer myself I know we can dig our heels in when we think something is already easy to use, or works in a way that we think is logical, but generally speaking, a percentage of users are not as technically able as we give them credit for.1 point

Did a remote in earlier with @Djidje cleared things and reinstalled but the big culprit was Synology Firewall. Should be good now.1 point

I'm with @MAX92 on this. If it were me I'd create a new share called "Media" or similar and then move all this content so it's: Media\Films Media\Music Media\TV Shows Media\Home Movies etc. Keep your media and program/meta data separate from each other.1 point

Will start clean test on the television this evening and try to come back with logs if necessary. And I'll set the fireTV to 30-40mbps. Thank you all!1 point

Not sure on the TV - it looks to be a high end Android TV. Is there a 120Mbit/sec setting ? - as tbh, that is more than enough for even the highest bitrate 4K Remux's. https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/6a2f145c The only real limitation you are likely to hit is DV (Dolby Vision) profiles - as the 'built in' Android for TV's does not support the Blu-Ray disk standard.1 point

Hi, Just because 'it works' does not mean it is supposed to or will be reliable .. From the link below - the FireTV Stick 4K has a supported bandwidth of 35Mbit/sec - you are trying to use 70Mbits+ H.265 (HEVC). Hardware accelerated up to 3840x2160p (4K) @ 60fps, 35 Mbps, Main 10 Profile Level 5.1, Color space 8-bit and 10-bit input with HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG. https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire-tv/device-specifications-fire-tv-streaming-media-player.html?v=ftvstick4k Emby will read the device and try and figure out how best to play this - based on the device, available bandwidth (wifi/ethernet etc). If you decide to force this by removing Auto - then that is fine and you may be able to play it, but the peak bandwidth (lots of screen action) will hit 70Mbit/sec and are bound to kill the FireTV stick at some point. If it worked all the way though, I would be surprised. I hope this makes a bit more sense ?1 point

Hi, not sure why the device crashed on 4K -160 setting. We likely need to investigate this further looking at some logs to see if we can discover why that crashed but 100 didn't. Likely it to high a bitrate for the client but you would think it would happen with both the 100 and 160 setting. That setting of 1080-6 is just a rough guide. Typically with transcoded 1080 material it would have stayed 1080 but with 4K media you have many more pixels and will need more bitrate to hold the quality. The server sees the 6Mb and knows it can't produce a good 1080-6 version so instead creates a 720-6Mb version to hold the quality for the given resolution. That setting as a whole is more about the bandwidth limit then the resolution. Auto by default tries to use a low bandwidth setting most of the time if it can't direct play. IMHO this could use a bit of love to better adjust so for now I'd say you are best off tweaking this setting once for each client to get the bandwidth usage that fits the environment. Hope that helps.1 point

rbjtech is correct: I do not have HDMI on my stereo system - not in or out. I only have stereo and the only inputs are Toslink, USB, and analog. Also your guess that LG CX does not passthru DTS is correct. And Toslink w PCM signal can only handle stereo (not 5.1 or more). Lucky for me, I only want stereo. RanmaCanada is correct: "If you have a Shield you should be using that to play your files, and not your TV." The way I do that is using Emby client installed on the Shield. After my first post, the 2nd post explains the success.1 point

Before the new update I just go to (control panel) then (user & Group) then choose the user (emby) - (EDIT) - (Permissions) and mark read/write for the the folder I want emby to share. But this is not working any more still can't add the folder to the library it will stop at /volume1 You need to give the permission in the shared folder it self for each share you want emby to access. here is what you need to do: 1- Go to Control Panel and select shared folder. 2- Select the share which contains your media and click Edit 3- Click the Permission tab. 4- Change the dropdown from Local Users to System internal user. 5- Check the read/write checkbox for the Emby user. 6- Click save to confirm the new permission. Don't forget this must be done for each share folder you wanted to be added. This is really annoying if you got many folders but you will do it one time any way. Hopefully this will be helpful1 point

Folder images will take priority, you can not have folder and central Emby images. There is no way to disable this. So you would need to save with media or disable Sonarr image/metadata.1 point

@cayars oh if the notice is just for a paid app, no problem. I don't mind buying apps. one time purchase and I'm good. I just would balk at any subscription recurring cost for watching my media. I buy apps all the time. Thanks for the clarification.1 point

Note Emby has to be shutdown in order to open the library.db properly. I would suggest ensuring you have a backup of your library.db before doing anything.1 point

Hi, You are going to need to pull that m3u file down locally and then try playing each channel in VLC while removing stations in foreign languages you don't want. A lot of those channels are GEO blocked or don't work so you will need to remove them again. Basically when you're done editing the m3u list all channels should be ones you want that play in VLC. Once done that add them to Emby Server again and see how this works.1 point
-
Hi, there is no easy way to do this but at least 2 ways to accomplish this. One is via SQL against the library.db file but you need a SQL tool and need to run this when Emby Server is shut down or against a copy of the database. This is my preferred method. The other way is using a plug to generate a list of all movies and then looking for dupes.1 point

I've been taking a look at the posters for a couple of actors. I'm really surprised how good these are. For example for movies with Tom Cruise in them I switched out about 2/3 of all my covers. The ones I didn't switch were basically the same. These are really good.1 point
