For me, the highlight was I did not get one call from my remote clients (family) for help with emby - it all just worked. Adding features is great and all - but for the core product to 'just work' for me is actually more important - so hopefully, in 2021, emby will start to add some of these new features, I'm not sure I will even use them - but emby does need to keep up, or it will lose it's reputation in the market very quickly.6 points

I have mostly kept up with Plex (and I keep a Plex server running but nearly unused) and what you should have said is "...they seem to be adding lots of new but nearly worthless features that are added primarily to feed their egos and monetize Plex." Even their much touted "watch together" feature does not really enhance the experience of consuming media for the majority of their users. In fact, judging by the lack of questions about it in their forums it is almost unused. In most cases Emby is functionally level or ahead of Plex and they pretty well beat Plex in that anything new pretty much works as intended. Emby sometimes make what, in my opinion, are poor choices but, even when that happens, the changes work well. Plex cannot say that and they are rapidly becoming more "content providers" than "content curators" and that is a move in the wrong direction. Emby has not really added much of value in the last year but neither has Plex and Emby is not trying to jam content down out throats. To be honest there is very little that Emby does not do that it needs to do. I do not like the idea of trying to shoehorn every possible function into Emby. Mostly that would just bloat Emby and not really do much to enhance my media consumption. There is nothing wrong with having separate programs for separate functions. One more thing: To me there is no "gap" with Plex that Emby needs to close. Emby does everything I need that Plex does and in almost all cases does it better with greater reliability.4 points

Often times when I see "Reason for transcodng: Media bitrate exceeds limit." in the info I wonder, what kind of internet connection do they have? I know this can cover multiple scenarios like bandwidth limit set for user, server, client side quality setting, as well as AUTO bandwidth detection... Can you PLEASE add to the dashboard the returned client bandwidth capabilities? The value you are getting from the client that tells emby its bandwidth abilities. While you are at it tighten up the spaces between lines on the transcode items, and align the results to the right instead of center.. MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE THIS :3 points

When we say 'emby', just how many people are actively supporting/developing things? More than a handful? When I switched from Plex due to their privacy changes, it felt for a little while that emby was closing the gap on Plex. I can't say I've gone back and checked Plex out very often, but I still receive their e-mails and they seem to be adding lots of new features. From experience, I suspect some won't fully work and users will be left with half-baked solutions, but at least there are adding new things. It feels like the 'team' here are struggling just to keep the ever growing number of platforms up to date and simply don't have the bandwidth for even relatively small suggestions from the community or to keep pace with their competitors?3 points

Wow those are massive additions I am very JELLY of, hehehe. HDR tonemapping support coming was mentioned earlier in the year but has disappeared since... Also not jumping on adding a Watch Together feature quickly like Plex did was a huge wasted opportunity to attract new customers.2 points

I mentioned it in another thread, but thought I'd put it here since this looks like a new section--just for posterity. Would like to have a bulk meta data editor function. For example, if I have 750 videos whose producing studio is the same, I want to select those videos and apply the name of the studio to those videos. Similarly, if there is a custom tag I want to apply to a subset of those movies, I want to be able to select them in bulk and apply the tag to those videos (instead of selecting them one by one).1 point

Media Library Icons for Emby Updated: 07/10/2021 I've always had a thing for the simple gradient style Hulu overlays on their library images. I'm not that great at graphic design, but I can mimic some things pretty decent. I hope! It's very simple, and clean and something I've been wanting to attempt for a while. I've never done anything like this, so constructive criticism is appreciated! More color options for media libraries coming soon!!! Also included to make your icons match across the platform, are video genre, music genre and TV network icons: I've hosted this only my Google Drive, so if if the link is not working please, reach out to me and let me know and I will do what I can to resolve! Does a lyrics plugin exist for Emby? Something to show the lyrics of a song while being played. It doesnt show in the Plugins catalog, so I assume one doesn't exist?1 point

Feature Request. A present I have several user accounts setup for family members. When we sit down together to watch a movie we currently log into one account (Mostly mine), so obviously only this account gets the watched status. What happens then is everyone uses my account because there's isn't up-to date and it's "just easier". This results in my account telling me I've watched something when I haven't... I would like the ability to log into my account and select/deselect which other users are present so that when a movie/TV episode is watched together, their watched statuses are updated accordingly? The next time you log in again all other users would have been deselected. It could be implemented so each user account can do this, or only select user accounts can. Even a special "Family" user account, or multiple viewers button as long as everyone's watched status is correct. Even just ticking the users present on the login screen before login into an account.1 point

I use the shuffle all option in my TV Shows quite a lot, but for a few shows I have a lot of specials/webisodes/featurettes and the like that can result in the shuffle all function becoming "polluted" with content I don't necessarily want to rewatch again. My current workaround is to use the .ignore file feature in my specials folder to exclude the content from Emby all together or only shuffle a specific season depending on the show (both not ideal), but an option to exclude specials/season 0 folders when using shuffle all would be an awesome addition! Thanks, AD1 point

I assume everyone has "Allow subtitle extraction on the fly" enable on Dashboard-Transcoding Allow subtitle extraction on the fly Embedded subtitles can be extracted from videos and delivered to Emby apps in plain text in order to help prevent video transcoding. On some systems this can take a long time and cause video playback to stall during the extraction process. Disable this to have embedded subtitles burned in with video transcoding when they are not natively supported by the client device.1 point

I scanned through the release notes and I'm struggling to find the 2020 highlight feature. The best I can come up with is maybe having Favorite channels added to all the apps. Other than that, I've really enjoyed the ATV app. The biggest improvement in the ATV app that I can remember during 2020 is the update to the Video Display. I know there were a lot of tweaks, but that's all I can recall at the moment.1 point

Funny how you guys write about the necessity of live tv change and also express your extreme happiness with bugfixes but fail to answer the question I posted in the title. What has been the standout feature of 2020 in Emby? Compared to Skip Intro for Plex and Watch Together for Jellyfin. No I do not care if you think it's unnecessary (watch together for me is super necessary to review videos with people) or if you think Emby is the gift from Zeus that de-stresses you (in that case, good for you). Please answer the question I posted in the title.1 point

It's like you aren't even listening. Is Emby built to require batch files? WTH!? I'm saying that the GUI should have more DVR functionality built in. I don't want to waste my time with scripts. This is what I get with Plex. If I can do this in Plex, why would I waste my time fussing with batch files and scripts in Emby?1 point

that would be what we would want to see... right now im blind to what the client is telling the server its top bandwidth is.1 point

Live TV is a huge part of the Emby Echo System and with DVR built in is one of the best/easiest ways to build a legal collection of media besides your disc rips. A lot of careful planning and unit testing has been going into this in order to have great features and better performance. It has a completely new pipeline for processing Live TV/streams. Some of the things being done with Live TV can be used with other playback as well. With reduced IO, new mechanism for accessing many new tuners and avoiding ffmpeg when possible on the input side make it faster processing with more internal control. These changes should be very welcome on lower end NAS and devices like Shield TV as well as on PCs that occasionally stutter/pause due to IO issues. Besides the core pipeline changes there are also new features as well. DVR is of course built on top of the Live TV part (foundation) so of course it benefits greatly from these changes.1 point

Luke, for years my custom Genre thumbnails would always be shown when clicking on Genre menu heading. You've been saying for months now "We're looking into it." The default thumbnails are gawd awful ugly. Please remedy this problem ASAP. How hard can it be? Thanx.1 point

hdr tonemapping on plex is only working on hardware fully on linux. i have a windows server and my 10 core Xeon cant process the 4k hdr tonemapping. plex must not be able to handle that many threads, because my cpu only hits 30% but it cant keep up.1 point

The app should be able to detect or know if a device supports h.265 and simply request that if it's configured. You need h.265 hardware on both ends, but many people have this now or are not too far away from it considering that the last 3 generations of quicksync do it and as many nvidia generations as well. I would very very very much prefer h.265 streaming to my clients because many are not on my LAN. 1/2 the bitrate is really enticing.1 point

"Setup Screen" was the wrong word to use. Probably 6 to 8 true setup screens but then many configuration screens for all the things people have asked for over the years that is now incorporated. As an example if you wanted to group channels there's a section for that. If you want to "stack" channels from different tuners a section for that. It's logical and surely not needed for simple installs but if you have the same channel from multiple tuner devices, want to combine them, group like channels, renumber your channels, auto or manual map channels different there are specific screens to handle this. You also have some screens that show status. The screens are there for a reason but you would never know there are that many unless you poke around changing things drastically to uncover them. The screens are dynamic in the sense that you won't see them unless doing a task that requires them. When you add as many new features as has been added you need advanced configurations screens for them that are logical to use and not hidden away to cause support issues. The majority of users will use only a handful of screens similar to before (tuner setup, guide setup, channel mapping). Nothing to fear by the number at all.1 point

HDR tone mapping should have happened, and didn't. That's a necessity, now. Disappointing. Emby is getting left behind. The HEVC remuxing issue hasn't even been addressed. These things are fundamental, and are being ignored.1 point

Hi, yes sure, it is correct. I can access this and all my other music and video files via Kodi 18.9 and Emby For Kodi 4.1.22 in Native Mode without troubles with Emby Server >4.0. It did work this way with all Kodi versions back to when I started with Kodi 17.3 and all earlier Emby For Kodi versions. FYI 'Diskothek_Musik' is a Windows Share. Emby For Kodi is running with Native Mode and all Shares are defined in Emby Server as network paths via the defined shares. Each user has the right to read the shares. Cheers Blue Max1 point

Hi. If you save your metadata to NFO files with your media then your genre changes will persist.1 point

Hi, Collections, playlists or a separate Library you can use for different Holidays is the way to go. I've got 680 Christmas movies and growing at present (a lot recorded from Hallmark and Lifetime channels) so I use a Library. I use a setup similar to this on disc: \Holiday\Christmas \Holiday\New Years \Holiday\Valentines \Holiday\Easter \Holiday\Patriotic ( I use this for Labor Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day) \Holiday\Halloween \Holiday\Thanksgiving I then mount \Holiday as a Holiday Library. Then using Folder access security I can pretty easily switch this library security wise to control what's shown. I prefer this over multiple Libraries for each "Holiday" as it takes up less homepage space. Here's a knowledge base article on Folder Access: https://emby.media/support/articles/Folder-based-Access-Control.html1 point

i think it would be helpful if you could set a number of episodes to auto play before it stops, or, like netflix, could ask if youre still watching. but unlike netflix, you could set the threshold yourself or turn it on/off when needed.1 point

So my two cents on best client.... In my house we have almost everything you could want as a client. Shield Pro (2019), Apple TV 4k, FireCube TV (2nd gen) and Roku Ultras. I think that from a pure Emby experience I would lean towards the Shield/FireCube (you can throw in 4k fire stick here too). But I think ultimately it comes down to a few things as well. 1) Mostly for movies/tv shows? 2) Live TV at all? 3) How much 4k HDR content are you going to be playing? I’ve learned that some of the above clients have issues with HDR content while others don’t. For example on the Apple TV, I sometimes have to use Infuse to play 4k content. But at the same time, I’ve had issues with the Shield when it comes to Live TV etc. One of the things that Plex does a better job of than Emby (and no, this is not an endorsement of Plex) is consistency across all clients. I’ve mentioned this on these forums a few times now, but a consistent UI across all clients is huge. For the most part all clients should behave the same. A user should have the “emby experience”. Not the “emby on roku” or “emby on apple tv” experience. But to come full circle... I honestly would rank in this order for Emby only (if you’re looking for media streamers as a whole my rankings would change) 1) Shield 2) FireCube/FireStick 3) Apple TV 4) Roku1 point

Keepalive is only good for http 1.1 so I guess it could help between nginx and emby. Otherwise my config is setup to natively use http2 which you are not supposed to enable keepalive with, its out of spec to use keepalive with http2, but http2 has keepalive sort of built-in, its just how http2 works. So between the client and the nginx server http2 takes care of keepalive. But from nginx to emby if you are connecting with http1.1 keepalive might be handy... I'll have to play around and see if there is a noticeable performance increase... I thought keepalive only works within the upstream module (like for load balancing) I'll have to look and see if it can even work just under server or location sections. I don't have a good way to see how emby's http server is working, like a status page that shows connection counts or anything... so it might be hard to test. But I cant imagine keepalive would be noticeable since people usually have nginx and emby on the same LAN or even the same PC/Server where open-send-receive-close connections would wiz on by... Not sure why you are seeing the multiple POSTs Just checked my log nothing jumped out, gots some more examples? are they all "playbackInfo" every time?1 point

I've finished Ukrainian translation of the 'Web App' and 'All Apps'. Now need apps with applied translation to fix many unclear moments. BTW I'm a professional translator and worked with dozens of translation tools and CAT systems. OneSky is the worst tool. Think about migration to the Transifex at least or try to implement import/export possibility.1 point

Closer now?? I know there's been a lot of other priorities that are more appreciated but this is icing on the cake (for me anyhow)!1 point

This is a hard one that requires re-working the entire user interface so that video can be displayed underneath. Emby Theater and the web app did this work years ago and that is why they have the feature. We cannot prioritize this ahead of things like Live TV development and other broadly used features, but hopefully we will be able to get to it in the not so distant future. Thanks.1 point

But there is a very large number of us that use @@radeon's tools and a smaller number of us that source our own. Many of the other clients have this including the web portal. I am still waiting to take full advantage of my android clients simply because this feature is not there yet. It is obviously pretty popular if it keeps getting bumped....1 point
