I quite like Emby as it appears much more efficient on my server than Plex - and I am a Plex lifetime subscriber - and have used it for a number of years. For what it is worth I reckon Plex's development has slowed way down which is really disappointing - look at the blogs at how many feature requests just go nowhere for years - literally. Anyway - it has me out looking for an alternative as I have been moving my library to UHD content and Plex completely burns my server. Emby seems more forgiving on variations to my MKV's before it decides to transcode, and when it transcodes it just doesn't go so hardout doing it (I run a Xeon, SSD caching on fast HDDs, 16Gb so the server is good enough). The only thing - the Samsung Emby player which is my main use is a bit flaky (apart from hard to install as it isn't in the NZ store!) on files that the Plex player plays fine direct streaming. I don't mind the subscription model - pay for the server and get all the clients - but it's just not streaming my UHD content on Samsung smoothly yet unless I transcode everything.
