Question about my port forwarding

Hi all,

I've been trying for weeks to get a remote connection.

No issue connecting via LAN to my DS218+  (LG TV, laptop etc)but remotely it's just not connecting. I can see my server but connection always fails.

My Nas is on a static IP 192.168.1.2

My Nas firewall isn't enabled under security so that's not the issue.

I've also made sure my router (vodafone Router Model Hhg2500) is forwarding port 8096 and the port is open when checking via  "can you see me.org"

no issue connecting and seeing my nas via Synology quick connect or by Plex

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this is going to help you but I did it using the Synology build in reverse proxy.

Setup a Synology ddns domain with a letsencrypt wildcard certificate. Forward port 80 and 443 to your NAS. It all sounds complicated but I had it all up and running in 5 minutes.

I can help you but i dont have much time the next week.

I'm french so sorry for my English. Did you try to connect with your IP extrenal when your are at home like xx.xx.xx.xx:8096 ?

And did you try with Emby http://app.emby.media/ ?

Hi MAX, I've tried all that. I can also get to the server splash page, I can see the name of the server but if i 192.168.1.2:8096, nothing and also trying  my public ip address with 8096 still nothing.

Please make sure the Emby Server software is started and running on the server machine. Try turning off any vpn's such as Synology quick connect. Then please check out our Connection Troubleshooter:

https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001849007-connectivity

Please try the steps listed there and let us know which ones succeed and which ones do not. Thanks.

Hi Luke, apologies  that's the first thing I did before posting here. Forwarded ports mentioned on my router and both available and open. My nas has no firewall and is running emby via  the package centre install. It never is not running. As I said I get to my server splash page and have typed in my ip but says cannot connect.

Thanks

I would keep it simple and default and start with plain http. Then once you have that working you can look at switching to https.

But by doing both things at once, you're up against multiple variables at the same time which will make this more difficult.

hi, I did try that firstly. Could this be an emby server issue issue  in package centre? As I have no issue with Plex remotely. It's not a drama though as most of my viewing is at home where we really like emby on the LG TV. Just wanted to compare the two and decide which to pay for.

When you tried that, what happened?

As suggested by @baukezwart, use Synology's Reverse Proxy.

Go to Control Panel > Application Portal > Reverse Proxy
Create something like the below (of course change it according to your domain).
Provided that you've forwarded 443 to your NAS, it should work.
You can forward 80 too to test (and change the source to http and 80), once (80) works, try to have the source come in over 443 (and install a certificate) for security, otherwise your passwords will be transported unencrypted (over 80) in addition to other security disadvantages.

I'd suggest enabling the firewall too and limiting access to your LAN and your country.

Edit: this might require the use of https and a certificate to work. So testing with http/80 might not be possible.

Hi all,

Apologies, Thanks for all your help. So I worked out after the last post that I hadn't  forwarded port 443 and port 5000 for the DSM. Now I can connect via smartphone. I have also now created a domain name.

Thanks you all for your help, as I could connect via quick connect and see the DSM I thought that was all fine.

Feel pretty stupid. Cheers for your patience!
