Below is a list from QNAP of when NAS products will hit (or have hit) EOL and also what firmware is the last issued - also importantly when the last Security Updates will be issued. Does not mean you cant use your NAS but dont expect much in the way of help if things go pear shaped.

Dont expose you NAS to the internet directly without other security measure in place even if it is a more modern NAS.

A slightly more user friendly summary (may be slightly out of date so check the above link)

@Luke- do you have a minimum firmware version Emby supports? possibly by CPU type/version - that could be posted somewhere to make it clear that some NAS's are just too old etc.

As all the above NAS's are likely to be problematic to support - have issues running the latest Emby server versions etc - and the user base will reduce over time

@PenkethBoy All our qnap packages are configured with QTS_MINI_VERSION set to 4.1.0. Generally speaking if the firmware ships with glibc 2.17 (2.12.1 for armv5 CPUs) or newer it should work out of the box, if it doesn't we just ship our own glibc and in most (if not all) cases that is enough.

Recent changes in our toolchains made it almost trivial to support even the very oldest armv5 models, so apart from the odd firmware here and there (for instance TS531P is giving us troubles for some reason I don't yet understand) I don't see anything preventing us from supporting the whole lineup yet.

In terms of requirements, the x86_64 and aarch64 (dotnet-core based) and armv5 (mono-based) packages are pretty much universal, and the armv7 packages come in both dotnet core and mono variants, the former for CPUs with NEON support, the latter for CPUs without NEON support.

good to know - but this should be posted in a public way so its easy to find by users

Also whats not clear is which emby a user would use (non techy) - this is partly because QNAP have way too many models and that results in several Emby versions and in some cases more than one version.

rather than just list a couple of example qnap models per Emby version - a matrix with a tick or cross and a recommended version if more than one and a qts version that is need to use it - would make life a lot easier for everybody.

I agree, but for that we'd first need a full list of models along with spec sheets. However finding information about old qnap models is near impossible, and even when the CPU has everything we need to run the dotnet runtime this is definitely not an exact science. We have cases like the TS531X that fails to run it even though the Alpine AL212 looks good on paper, and to this day its bigger brother the AL314 isn't even capable to run any variant at all.

There's some very shady stuff going on in some firmwares, and qnap isn't the only one to do that. We can only rely on trial and error and would need the help of the community to establish such a list. Not sure what the best way to collect this information is, @Luke maybe some telemetry from inside emby?

yes the 31/2x Amazon chipped nas's are junk - and cheap for a reason

if you can find the specs - time to put them out to grass - why spend time supporting hw thats so old qnap does not support it anymore
