I've installed Emby Server on my PC and set up the libraries. I'm able to login to the emby account on the android phones connected to the same wifi as the PC. I want to be able to access my content when I'm out, but whenever I type the remote access IP into any browser or try to use the Emby App to connect, I get "This site can't be reached. ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT" on Chrome, and "Connection Failure. We're unable to connect to the selected server right now." on the Android app. This happens both on my home network and on other networks.

How do I resolve this issue? I'm a tech noob so please be patient.

Hi, you didn't mention anything about turning on remote access or setting up port forwarding on your router to allow remote connections to your Emby Server.

https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001849007-connectivity

Try following the setup directions in the above Emby Knowledge Base article.

I've read the connectivity article and the first step it tells me to try is Emby Connect, but that fails with similar error messages to the ones I've posted. It doesn't clearly tell me how to turn on Remote Access, but I am seeing a Remote(WAN) Access IP on the dashboard, so I'm assuming it's enabled. I've read both the wikihow article and seen the video on how to forward a port, and have done so in my router for port 8096 and 8920. The PC has been assigned a static IP according to the steps mentioned in the video. I've tried remotely logging in again, but I'm still unable to connect to the server. canyouseeme.org shows me neither ports are reachable, so I'm assuming my router needs additional configuration. What should I do?

Hi,

Could you try the following step plz ?

Go to http://www.mon-ip.com/ and note your ip

Then go to http://192.168.1.1 on your local network, you have to be logged with wifi. Then you must find something like "nat" or "nat /pat", it's the part where you open your ports. When you are on the right place, you must add the port 8096 in TCP/ UDP on the the computer which have emby.

Then you will go to the ip from "mon-ip.com" :8096 for example, if your ip from mon-ip.com is "1.1.1.1", you should go to 1.1.1.1:8096

And don't forget to check in the network setting "Allow remote connections to this Emby Server."

This is what http://www.mon-ip.com/ shows me

image.thumb.png.953cd3eba37d3e21195f31538957dbc1.png

I copied the IP address and went to my router's settings and looked for NAT. This is the only place I could find mentioning NAT

.image.thumb.png.b52932df60a3a8d997d356be5c105b8f.png

I don't know how exactly to fill all of these entries, so I skipped it for now.

image.thumb.png.e5a135f6488f908d7df729b32eeb0884.png

In the port forwarding section, I've forwarded ports 8096 and 8920 for the service types SIP-TCP, DNS-TCP and SIP-UDP, which were the only mentions of tcp and udp I could find. I got 49.36.41.17 from https://whatismyipaddress.com/, and 192.168.29.51 is the IP address I assigned to my ethernet adapter after watching the port forwarding video.

image.thumb.png.328a65b566b59aa58a5c9985db6d8fb1.png.

Trying to access http://49.36.41.17:8096/ and http://192.168.29.51:8096 yielded the connection timed out error, while trying to enter 2405:201:3004:7044:88df:50b8:3943:ca7b:8096 into chrome simply gives me no google results.

I've checked that the allow remote connections option is enabled. It was

Ok you have a IPV6, so it's not necessary.

In your 4th screen, change your ip address (46.xxx.xxx) which should be your public address (and hide it for security) by your local ip of your pc where emby is running.

The ip should start with "192.168.xx.xx". And retry to access via your public ip (certainly, you will discover your public ip here https://ip.lafibre.info/  the line where you see "ipv4")

Sorry for my bad english

I used ipconfig /all to find my local ipv4 was 192.168.29.51, so it's already what I've set as the IP for my ethernet adapter. I've deleted the public IP from the port forward section of my router. I've also already opened the ports 8096 and 8920 for 192.168.29.51 as seen in the 4th screen. When I tried to access via my public IP, the same error message appeared as before

And please don't worry about your English, as it is more than sufficient and clear enough to communicate what you want me to do. You're doing me a great favor by trying to fix my problem.

I also looked up port forwarding for my particular router, and discovered this reddit thread:

TLDR: My ISP uses something called a CG-NAT and it apparently doesn't allow port forwarding to work. It also lists several possible solutions like reverse ssh tunneling, Zerotier and portmap.io, but I do not have the knowledge to implement them without external help.

Jio is a recent entry into the Indian ISP scene. Jiofiber is their FTTH service.

My OS is Win 10 version 2004

Since you are on a CG-NAT your options are limited.

You would need to setup a VPN service that allows you to get an IP and port that are static.

You then basically use this as a tunnel to bypass the restrictions your ISP put in place.

Ok ok. I found nothing about how to forward port in your router. It's not so simple than french router ! I saw this theead https://www.cfos.de/en-us/cfos-personal-net/port-forwarding/jio-jiofi-2.htm

But i don't know if it can help

The settings you've sent me are for the Jiofi 2, which is a portable wifi router offered by Jio. I'm afraid those settings don't match up with the interface for my broadband router.

Which VPNs offer this facility? Also to trial this setup are there any free alternatives that I can use?

Ok my bad

I found this

https://www.maketecheasier.com/reverse-ssh-tunnel-allow-external-connections/

But i'm not sure that it can solve your problem...

I'll try this and get back to you.

Edit: It requires me to create a virtual private server, and I'm fine buying that or the VPN if nothing else works, but at least for the moment I want to wait to check if there are any free alternatives.

I'm not sure if its totally free, because he speak about vps...

If it not works, you can see how LogMeIn Hamachi works. It allows you to create network.

The link I gave you doesn't have anything to do with Emby Connect but give you the steps needed to setup the server to work remotely.  You'll still need to use it with any tunnel to defeat your ISP's cgnat.

The instructions for setting up that SSH tunnel look complex with many steps and I don't think it's really what you want to do.  I'd suggest either using a Public VPN server that will allow you to get your own port and IP OR setup your own VPN which isn't as hard as it might sound if you use OpenVPN.  You can use most any VPS for this.

Hamachi likely isn't what you want as you need to run that software everywhere which stops you from using all the devices you want to use.

All you want to do is setup a tunnel for the SERVER ONLY to get it on the public internet.

I'll try that out too. Do you have a guide on how to set it up, in case I can't find one myself?

I used hamachi long time ago. I think you could find a good documentation on the edutor website. But i will see if i can found something to help yoi

I meant that the first step in the External Connections subsection was to complete in-network setup and then use emby connect to remove the guesswork.

From https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001849007-connectivity

Emby Server also allows you to connect when away from home. We call these external connections because they're out of our home network. Before we begin, we'll assume everything covered above in the In-Network Connections section is functioning correctly with your Emby Server, and that you're able to connect using other devices in your home network. If not, then you'll want to go over that section first.

From here, we suggest using the Emby Connect feature as it takes the guesswork out of external connectivity. You only need to read below if you're not using Emby Connect, or you're having trouble connecting.

I still did follow the guide all the way through to the port forwarding section.

Are there any recommended guides I could look at to setup my own vpn? Like I mentioned in OP, I'm not the most tech-literate, so anything would be a huge help.

Again Emby Connect is not mentioned in that article and is never really needed as it's just an optional server but is kinds of useless for internal connections.
But glad you were trying to follow it. :)

IF you want access to your server ONLY for you or family you could maybe use Hamachi or ZeroTier but you'll need to always use the client software.

https://www.skysilk.com/blog/2018/install-openvpn-linux-vps/ or anything similar you get back with a google search similar to "OpenVPN VPS SETUP" will likely have the info for setting this up.  The advantage ONCE SETIP over Hamachi or ZeroTier is that no client software is needed as you'll be using the port/IP of your VPS instead.
