libav instead off ffmpeg ?

Hi guys !

Mediabrowser is great on windows but it use a lot of cpu :(

Why you don't try to use libav instead of ffmpeg to increase performance with hardware acceleration encoding ?

Libav is a fork of ffmpeg and command line are closer. Linux use it now to replace ffmpeg. why not mediabrowser ?

most changes from libav end up getting merged into ffmpeg so i'm not sure that's really true

I have to say that all Linux distros actually haven't replaced FFMpeg with Libav.  I admit that Ubuntu has so there is a large number of users who use use Libav over FFMpeg; however, Arch hasn't made the switch and I am quite sure that most distros actually ship with FFMpeg.

I'd love to get/see QuickSync support but from what I read there is a license issue with the library ffmpeg would need to include. For HTPC QuickSync would be awesome since (without gaming) the iGPU on the newer Intel chips is more then enough (especially now that the 29fps timing is way better.

From the ffmpeg bug tracker it sounds like you would need to compile yourself with the option to include libraries that don't match the ffmpeg licensing agreement. Not that that would necessarily stop MB3 from having it). Also, it's for Windows only and there has been a big push for MB3 to work on OSX and Linux. Not sure if that will impact it's inclusion in MB3 or not since without QS ffmpeg still works so it's not like including it would break Linux support.

You might like to know that I have now created a working ffmpeg which includes Intel QuickSync support.

Read more about it here and take a look at the couple of steps that will be required to get MediaBrowser working with GPU transcoding.

MBS will benefit hugely from GPU transcoding, I really hope it comes to the Linux version ASAP.
