Any way to change subtitles after playing?

I have a series in a playlist and it's defaulting to another language's subtitles despite having English as my preferred language. Can I change this on my remote during playback?

If you’re using the native player than most likely not unless the item has subtitles supported by Apple. 
 

if you’re using the MPV player you can switch subtitles in the pull-down menu.
