lightbreaker 2
As the title suggests, I'm looking for a replacement for my very crappy mini-computer that has served as my Emby / FTP server for the last 4 years (and finally died). I've got one 8 TB external with all of my media files (which I'll convert into an internal, it's past its warranty) and a 1 TB internal for security footage (which is overkill, but it is an old drive). I don't think I'll go RAID but I might to provide backup for my media at some point. As far as transcoding, I pretty much always play via Kodi on my Nvidia Shield, direct via my main computer, or via SMB on my iPad. So, thinking about a 4 bay solution to add either more storage or more backup options, what fits my use?
Luke 37062
@@FrostByte can you suggest a Synology model?
FrostByte 5049
If you are doing absolutely no transcoding then I guess you could just get the cheapest 4-bay model because they can all run Emby https://www.synology.com/en-uk/products?bays=4&chassis=Desktop If you may do any transcoding at all then you will want to get one with an Intel processor which leaves the DS418play and DS918+ models right now https://www.synology.com/en-uk/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/Compatibility_Peripherals/What_kind_of_CPU_does_my_NAS_have
lightbreaker 2
Got it! That's what I thought made sense. From your tone in the first line I think you are suggesting having "expansion" power may be useful. What is the significant difference between the 418play and the 918+ in terms of performance? From your tone in the first line I think you are suggesting having "expansion" power may be useful. What is the significant difference between the 418play and the 918+ in terms of performance? There's not a huge difference between speed of the two, but the 918 has twice the cores DS418play processor 2 core https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/95597/intel-celeron-processor-j3355-2m-cache-up-to-2-5-ghz.html DS918+ 4 cores https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/95594/intel-celeron-processor-j3455-2m-cache-up-to-2-3-ghz.html The 918+ allows you to add 2 nvme drives for caching read/ write If I had to do it all over I would have forked over the little bit of extra cash for the DS918+ because you can add the expansion unit for more drives later. I have a lot of 4K movies and 4 8tb drives filled up faster than I thought it would However, my DS418play has performed great and I'm glad I got it. Right now it's just being used for Emby and Surveillance Center for my IP cameras which feed video into Emby. The only thing that it really can't handle is transcoding 4K to 4K (burning in PGS subs for instance), but 4K to FHD or anything else works great.
