searching function not working properly

When searching for movies I type in for example "ZO" and it finds all my movies starting with "ZO" which works great. If I then select a movie to look at it in more detail and return back to the movie list and do another search it either shows nothing or goes back to the start.

What version of "Theater"?  What server version?

I just searched "ZO" in Emby Theater 3.0.11 and clicked on a returned movie and it entered that movie details screen.

Unless there is something in your server log, I can not reproduce a issue on either Windows systems I am testing on.

Hopefully someone else has some ideas.

Oh wait i see, so you're not actually using the search function. You're using the alpha keys shortcut feature.
