Hi all,

have some issues with playback of some MKV files.

I'm running emby Server 4.4.0.22 beta on Synology NAS DS1819+

I've disabled encoding in in user settings, because it's not needed.

I've enough upload for streaming FullHD, or even 4K over the internet.

Also the DS isn't that good for encoding and sometimes the ffmpeg encoding hang up in processes even if there is no encoding running.

Just rebooting the DS solves this.

It's all running fine most x264, or x265 are played fine.

But i have issues with some x264 files that did not play.

Just a spinning circle for a second and thats it - no error, nothing

I figured out that these files that don't play are encoded with 4 RefFrames.

5 RefFrames files are just playing fine.

This issue just exist on AndroidTV Apps!

Tested:

NVidia Shield

Amazon 4K FireTV Stick

Sony Smart TV

These files are playing fine on:

Galaxy S10+

Galaxy Tab S4

Emby Theatre for Windows

So this is an AndroidTV App related issue.

Is there a wayfor you to fix it?

Anyway I sent a log thru the app yesterday waiting for a work around.

Reproduce your problem and then use this button to send the log.  Then add the following information to your report in the forum:

  • Exactly what you were doing and what happened.  Include the name of whatever you played if it is a playback problem
  • The time you sent the log (in Eastern Time please - UTC -5)
  • The name of the Emby user on the local server that was logged in at the time

Also, did you try this?

Hi.  If you set your server settings to default, do they play properly?

The player cannot figure out what kind of video this is:

They very well may be playing differently on other apps.  Did you do as I suggested and undo the things you disabled on the server?

The video player that we're using is just having trouble with the file for whatever reason, so we're doing the best that we can with it by falling back to transcoding in order to allow it to play successfully.

With the player we embed into the app we stay on top of updates for it, and it is constantly improving with new development. Over time I'm sure it will get more and more resilient to handle more variations within media files.
