Whenever I try to watch live TV through the Emby Theater app I get a spinning circle for a few minutes before the app freezes.

The app is from the Emby site, not the Windows store.

Live TV will playback on my phone and through the web player on any device.

It will not play through androiid TV on an Nvidia Shield.

I use an HDhomerun tuner.

The tuner will play using NextPVR, and the HDhomerun app.

E,by theatre will still not play LiveTV if using the NPVR plugin in Emby server, however I can still use the web player or my phone.

In the Emby server log file it shows the stream being accessed then writing to a transcoding file. At the point where the stream is to be played by Emby Theater it seems to try and access the local loopback address rather than the address of the server or tuner.

Beyond this problem, opening a TV stream through Emby is hugely slow compared to NextPVR. NPVR takes a second or 2 while emby always takes 10 seconds or more.

I have attached the part of the server log from just before trying to watch LiveTV.

Any updates on this?

Emby theater will not even work when using the nextpvr plug in. Which works immediately in kodi.

Hi there, have you tried setting up the HD Homerun directly in Emby, without using next pvr?

Posted

I have tried directly first.

I only later tried nextpvr as this is already working with kodi so I assumed there would be no problems...

Definitely points to emby as the problem though.

When I try and tune in with emby theatre when using the nextpvr plug in the tuner is active on the nextpvr server but I still only get a loading screen in emby theatre.

Are you using the tv metadata from the NextPVR plugin in Emby?

Always make sure that you are running the "Refresh Guide" task in Emby right after the EPG update in NextPVR, you might have to change the time settings in the task in Emby.

For a test, run a refresh guide in Emby and wait for it to end.

After that, reenter the LiveTV in Emby and retry to play LiveTV.

Ciao, Alfred

I've refreshed the guide.

My channel mappings in NPVR are different and they update accordingly in emby theater.

After replacing ffmpeg with the latest version livetv will now play...

However it is direct playing and shouldn't have affected anything.

Back to not working again.

I'm a little disappointed as to how unreliable the Windows version is.

The Android TV version seems to work far better.

It seems to be the version of mpv perhaps. The version that comes with emby doesn't handle hdr videos correctly and the lighting keeps changing randomly. If I replace mpv for a newer version too fix this then live tv will not work.

Could a more up to date mpv version be looked into and fully supported?

Yes we will update but there are certain things we're waiting on. Thanks.

The web app and the android app work fine.

Emby theater seems to as well when using the old version of MPV. But wehn using the old version hdr videos don't play correctly.

Try the git build of mpv from March 10th

Try the git build of mpv from March 10th

Unfortunately it has the same problem with livetv

Then the problem lies elsewhere. If you force it to transcode, does it play?

Whether I transcode or not it will not play in theater.

The problem seems to almost certainly lie with mpv player.

I have tried using theater on the same pc as the server and face the same problem. Tv playback will work until i use a version of mpv player not supplied with theater.

The version supplied however will not properly play hdr content. so I'm stuck with either problem.

The official version of mpv will play livetv. The git builds will not.

When madvr was part of theater there were no problems with anything.

It isn't mpv. I use mpv for everything. I don't know how you are able to use madvr for TV as that shouldn't be possible. Stream cache has been removed from mpv, and Theater relies on it. You can't use any build later than March 10th. I use that build in Theater and I have no issues.

You are also saying that Shield won't play.

It will not play through android TV on an Nvidia Shield.

So you have something else that is causing a problem

After a bit fiddling I have a reasnoble solution until updates are made later.

I can use the old version of mpv to allow live tv to work.

Fixing the hdr issues required an edit to mpv.conf using info from Doofus at https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/69872-hdr-tone-mapping-with-mpv/.

Thanks for the info.

The stream cache being removed mpv is obviously the issue.

I've seen a few people requesting for it to be added again.

The march 10th build seems to give me issues with TV still but the latest official one from October seems fine... Along with the tonemapping fixes

On the madvr front, it will play TV in kodi via nextpvr.

The official release from october doesn't have the HDR algorithm updates. So that won't look very good. The build needs to have this PR rolled in, which was made after the last official release.
