Limitations of Playback Control From Dashboard

Last week, my girlfriend visited family out of state and was thrilled that she could watch her favorite show while falling asleep. The downside is, that while she was there the damn thing played all night long. It wasn't too much of a strain on our data cap, but I was bummed I wasn't able to stop play back remotely from the dashboard.
Now she's back home, and I don't have the ability to pause, or stop from the dashboard on a device I've been able to previously.

Is there something that needs toggled, or are the dashboard controls limited per device/account? I like having the ability to stop/pause playback from the dashboard but it seems my god-like authority has been reduced to just watching without interfering.

Out of state she was watching via a Samsung smart Tv. Locally, she's watching via a Fire Stick.
TL:DR where'd my thunderbolts go?

It depends on the type of connection the app has with the server. In some cases it won't be available.
