Refresh all metadata with Emby 4.x

In Emby 3.x it was possible to force refresh of all metadata via the metadata manager by clicking on the library name. That did open a regular but empty editor form where I was able to press "..." to select "refresh metadata".

Today I've noticed that this option is gone and selecting a library does not open a form anymore.

Soooo, how do I trigger it now?  I don't want to activate "auto refresh" for the library and wait 30 days :)

You can do it from the main home screen of the web app, or from Emby library setup in the server dashboard.

Why would someone want/need to Replace All metadata that often?

Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for.

I was playing around with the Genre Cleaner and by mistake I managed to remove all "Science-Ficition" genre tags of my movies. A force refresh is the fastest way to get it back.

Does refresh all metadata actually refresh everything?  My Emby doesn't actually read in the set data or External ID's from my nfo files.  If there's something already there, it'll keep it.  If they are empty, then they remain empty.  This is only for certain movies too.  There's no difference in nfo files.

Hi there, can you please go over an example? Thanks.

When I add an item to the library with this nfo, the imdb id and tmdb id are set as they should be.  But, the tmdb collection id is not set.  If I delete the external id's using the Emby metadata editor and save.  Then, refresh metadata with "Replace all metadata" OR "scan for missing metadata".  None of the External ID values appear.

<ids>
        <entry>
            <key>tmdb</key>
        </entry>
        <entry>
            <key>imdb</key>
        </entry>
        <entry>
            <key>tmdbSet</key>
        </entry>
    </ids>

You put that inside an nfo? I have never seen that before. We do not support reading that convention. What software writes that?

If I run "Refresh Metadata" with the "Replace all Metadata" option from the main Emby page, what are the expected behaviors?

#1) Does it actually replace ALL metadata, or does it only replace the metadata for UNLOCKED items?

#2) If I have a metadata field filled in, and the new refresh scan does not find that information anymore, will it blank out the field, or will it leave existing data intact?

#3) Does the refresh alter the "sort" field?

Thanks.

One more ...

#4) The Metadata manager now has a representation for the folders separate from the movies inside of those folders.  Does the scan do anything for the folder or does it just fetch metadata for the movie inside the folder?

#5) What is the expected behavior for images if I leave "Replace existing images" UNCHECKED?

    a.  Will it download missing images for UNLOCKED items?

    b.  Will it download missing images for LOCKED items?

    c.  Will it completely ignore images for both LOCKED and UNLOCKED items?

Thanks.

It should not touch locked items.

Generally speaking it should be blanked out, however this is tricky. It's not quite one size fits all for all metadata fields, so you may see some variations here per field.

If you mean sort title, no.

Yes, no, and for the third question, I'm not sure what you're asking. Existing images are not ignored.

Luke, thanks for the quick response.  I'm a little iffy on the answer for #2, but everything else seems great.

I'm attempting to refresh metadata for a portion of my library while leaving metadata (content and images) untouched.

I have unlocked the parts of my library that I want updated, but wanted to make sure certain fields will be retained.

To prevent my images from getting messed up, I decided to temporarily change my "Fetcher Settings".  I basically just told it not to download anything (no Logos, Thumbs, Backdrops, etc.).  Now I can refresh and not worry about my images.

It seems that will certainly protect all of my images.

I have a couple of shows with some missing images and have always wondered what exactly the "auto refresh" would do here.

I assume it would:

1. Check for missing images/metadata

2. Leave available images/metadata as is

Correct?

Yes. But it will also overwrite manually edited metadata fields.

*as long as you haven't locked the fields you have changed (which you should pretty much always do)

Hi, I resume this topic because I'm experiencing problems too..

I have some episodes with metadata from thetvdb. This episodes doesn't hava a IMDB ID

example:

https://thetvdb.com/series/the-seven-deadly-sins/episodes/8397876

image.png.414d961ab47b3388ea2fca986fdfb33c.png

image.png.d369b50d224176503d9f3ad5fa224b5a.png

I then choosed to switch to themoviedb:

https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/62104-nanatsu-no-taizai/season/4/episode/19

image.thumb.png.331b51bcacfd3d3e870d51ff6d9c2161.png

has you see the episodes (and the other has the imdb id).

I setted themoviedb as my main provider in library settings:

image.png.92c05e9ce041fc3011cec5b01d783050.png

Using identify feature the titles were refreshed from themoviedb (I translated today the italian title so are not grabbed yet, but this is the title on themoviedb site previously😞

image.png.43ce3b92b976f1a6cf0476fb209a3d00.png

but the external id's are not changed:

image.thumb.png.1c994c74a928248f122cd78e8b04e019.png

image.png.820dd732321b3abee335898ed773cab8.png

there's no lock function on this fields additionally...

so...why is not working?

I would recommend moving the tvshow outside library folder, doing scan to eliminate the entry, moving it back to library folder and doing rescan to add it again, then check if it now catch the imdb ids.

ok, I will try but this is a workaround, not a solution..

this topic is up from 2 years with the same problems..maybe the devs have to resolve this bugs?

Out of curiosity, when you changed the provider, you tried both metadata refresh option (replace all or missing only)?

Also could you post info about your other library settings, if you have nfo readers and/or nfo savers enabled.

yes,

tried in order:

- identify

- refresh all metadata (without images)

- refresh all metadata (with images)

- missing metadata

about the library (I now reverted to tvdb):

I assume you changed it back to show the configuration where the problem originated, I know you are aware that if you do a scan to add the anime again with tvdb as first priority, the problem will probably repeat (as no imdb id by provider), unless you are trying to reproduce the problem and trying to fix again changing provider and refreshing.
