Connect via LAN vs WAN

Hey guys!

I was wondering: if you set up on your mobile devices a WAN IP (or a DNS server), when you use the app inside your LAN with those settings, will it still connect via WAN (meaning, the item will be streamed from server ==> router ==> internet ==> router ==> mobile device) or will it be connecting over LAN directly?

Thanks in advance

Keep up the good work

I think this will depend on your router. I know if I use my external DNS address while in my LAN, it will still connect via the WAN. I do know that some routers are smart enough to route locally though. This is called NAT loopback, NAT hairpinning, or NAT reflection. Check if your router supports this.

Thank you for you answer.

That would mean that if it doesn't support that, I'd have to manually switch between LAN and WAN IP address. Is an "automated" system possible? Meaning the app "knows" when it is inside the network and use the LAN IP?

Vidman

This feature is currently in beta for the android app...I'm eagerly awaiting it as my router doesn't support hair pinning so I need to use two separate settings for LAN vs wan connections
