SSL for LAN

Hello,

I have been really enjoying the Emby server and have been using it only on devices on the same network (no remote connections). I was just wondering is it possible to use a self-signed certificate to provide encryption? I only use emby in Chrome browser so devices refusing to connect would not be an issue. I am asking this as there is no option to provide an SSL certificate unless I enable remote connections.

Thanks.

Hi, in theory it's possible. you might be able to enable remote connections, enter the cert, and then disable remote connections after that. haven't tested this myself though. Let me know if that helps. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion - however I am not able to get it working, when I attempt to use the https port, I get an error in the browser ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE I've checked and it's not a problem with the firewall and the http port is still working fine, so I don't really know what could be causing this.

I think this may be more easily handled by a reverse proxy such as NGINX. You could even automate the certs using let's encrypt!

I'm using an NGINX setup w/ let's encrypt certs and it's working great. You can even get certs using txt record verification instead of through port 80/443 w/ certbot, useful for those who can't port forward those 2 ports. However, that's only over remote connections. Though I modified it slightly myself, this config is a pretty good config that you can mostly set and forget: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/48236-setting-up-emby-behind-a-reverse-proxy-nginx/\

That config is meant for a lot of things, but you can strip away all locations but Emby and the root & index options. If you want emby to connect on the domain root, such as https://example.com or https://example.com:1234, just change the location from "/emby" to "/". That should work.

Not bashing OP, but why would you need HTTPS over LAN? LAN connections shouldn't ever leave your local network, so unless there is someone on your network snooping on your traffic, there is no real added security benefit.

Hi there, did you configure an SSL certificate in Emby Network settings?
