Library Scan, New Files Added

I just installed Emby this weekend and, for most parts, it is working quite well. The problems I appear to be having is updating the library when new files are added. Yesterday morning I added two new episodes to an existing series and that evening they did not appear within the Emby app running on my Roku. I went to my Windows 10 Emby Server to see what was going on and the two new additions were not appearing there as well. Being a noob with Emby and not aware of the Library Scan function I left it alone. This morning I checked the library and the two files were now appearing.I looked at some of the logs and it appears that a scan occurred at midnight. So, my questions are:

When exactly does a Library scan occur?

Can it be set to run at specific intervals? (i.e. every 30 min)

Can it be set to run automatically when new files are added?

Thanks in advance

It is set to run automatically via a scheduled task in Emby.

You can manually execute a scan on all or part of your library.

You can edit the scheduled task to run at different interval(s).

In each library there's an option for 'enable real time scanning'. Check that and new content will show up within a couple minutes of being added

That option is/was enabled all along but new media did not appear until the scheduled scan ran. I tried adding another file this morning (different episode, different series) and after two hours it still did not appear. I manual ran the library scan and voila.... It appeared.

Found it, edited it. Should be good to go now, I hope :)

You are probably seeing what a lot of W10 users see. The Library Monitor senses to many changes and stops monitoring.

It is something to do with the windows file system - If you see this happen again you can check the log and most likely will find entries where the LibraryMonitor has stopped. Initiating a full scan will re-enable the LibrayMonitor. Also restarting the server will do the same.

Just one of the quirks running Emby in a windows environment - though it seems for me to be less of an issue -- happens less frequently than earlier Emby releases.

I have copied the sections in question from within the emby log into a text file.

The section contains right up to about 13:36 when I got impatient and ran the scan manually

You really need to attach the whole log - if you aren't comfortable doing that PM it to @@Luke

I was looking to see this type of entry which I did not see - before you kicked off the manual scan:

.... Info LibraryMonitor: Watching directory....

I see it after the scan which is good

I don't see any new file detection happening at all like:

Info LibraryMonitor: Season 1 (E:\TV-Shows\T\The Rookie\Season 01) will be refreshed -- That is what you should get.

What is this exactly: \\CKD_DISKSTATION\Plex....Do you have fulle read/write access to it with the Emby PC/User?

How is the TV Shows library organized? Does it match one found here?:

How is the network folder shared? SMB, NFS? Permissions on the share?

Note that a manual scan or one that is invoked by a Scheduled Task will properly add any new file(s) I drop into the TV Shows folder. The issue is "Real Time monitoring" does not appear to add any additions. I have set the scheduled task to run every 15 minutes which, in most cases, should work fine. Only time when this has become in issue in the past (with Plex) when I add a new file and immediately fire up my Roku to watch it. Most cases I have to either index manually or wait a minute or two before the addition appears. With Emby, as it stands now, I'll have to remember to manually scan or wait up to a maximum of 15 minutes for the Schedule task to run the scan. A minor inconvenience I can live with.

Just trying to figure out what the issue is - hence all the questions. This shouldn't be happening.

There are plenty of users to help straighten out what ever the issue might be. But it's cool. If you run out of patience with it give us a holler.

Let's look closer at the realtime monitor. Can you enable debug logging under the Logs section of the server dashboard. Then restart the server. Then can you please make some file changes such as adding a new video. Then give it a few minutes and please attach the emby server log here? Thanks !

I did as you requested above. The log file is attached, however, this is what I noticed.

In the folder P:\HBO FX Shows\Outlander there are 17 episodes of The Outlanders. All were correctly marked as Watched

After I enables Debug Logging and restarted the server I added 1 new file to the library. The new file I added was Outlander.S04E07.1080p.HEVC.x265-MeGusta.mkv

After a few minutes I checked the HBO FX Shows Folder (which has the filter Unplayed enabled) and noticed that all 17 + 1 new episode of Outlander were marked as unplayed.

The Home page, however, shows nothing for the Outlander series in either Next Up or Latest sections.

Hope the log will help you figure what is going on.

This log does not show that episode being processed/imported.

But from structure in post 13 it looks like a nesting issue.  Can you post a screenshot of library folder setup.

The only library that has realtime monitoring enabled is this:

2018-12-16 08:56:23.854 Info LibraryMonitor: Watching directory \\CKD_DISKSTATION\Plex

Whatever library this corresponds to:

 P:\HBO FX Shows\Outlander

It doesn't look like you've enabled the realtime monitor for that library.

What happy2play is saying could also be true as well.

Ok, well I didnt help matters any by adding to the confusion. I was looking the Plex server (different PC) when I created the last post above. On the Emby server there is no path P:\HBO FX Shows\Outlander

Sorry about that

There is only one Library (the Plex folder on a network drive)  on the Emby Server. The path to it is \\CKD_DISKSTATION\Plex

5c179c575db25_level1.jpg

Underneath the Plex Folder is:

5c179cda87548_level2.jpg

Under each of these folder contains folders for each series. For example, the HBO folder has several folder for each of the series :

5c179d2d1accf_level3.jpg

Each series folder may contain one or more folders for each season. For example Outlander folder contains 2 seasons

5c179dee6a696_level4.jpg

Underneath each season folder are the actual video files

5c179e2f06b1f_level5.jpg

Am I nesting these files too deep? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

No, nesting is fine. Is this all on the same machine as the server?

Well sort of. \\CKD_DISKSTATION is a NAS shared among several PCs on the same wifi network.

Can you show us the folder config in the Emby library?

See screenshot

In addition to the images I posted above, I am not sure what else you need.  Image 2, above, shows each folder contained within the Emby Library (\\CKD_DIKSKSTATION\Plex)
