bsharp914 0
Hi All- I'm new to Emby, and struggling with a couple of issues- not sure this is the correct place to post it, but chose it because I've installed on an Ubuntu (Mint) server. I had no difficulty with the download and install, and the initial setup. I'm using an older Xeon that was previously used for Plex and a NAS. If I use the web interface, everything seems to work perfectly. If I use the Emby app on Roku, music works fine- but almost all videos stutter badly. The Roku is a newer stick model, and the TV is a 4K Vizio, and Plex and Kodi work correctly (no stutter), even when I have to transcode movies on Plex. I initially thought it was the transcoding settings in Emby that were the issue- and I've read through the posts on that topic, and set it at the lowest possible settings, and I still get stutter. It happens on 4K, 1080, and 480 files in mp4 format as well as mkv, with and without subtitles, embedded or not. I've tried everything I can think of, and I still get the stuttering, and I'm unsure what to try next. Any advice on what to try would be appreciated (as well as a better place to post this question if I've put it in the wrong place). Thanks in advance for any help

bsharp914 0
And the ffmpeg log from the Roku playback session? Thanks. I hope this one will work- I have a big time gap in the ffmpeg logs between 1:30pm and 10pm- which is strange because that's the time frame when I had the Roku logging turned on, and tried several files.Log

I tried same file and three others I know to have stuttered since I installed. I started playing, then turn subtitles on, then off, then back on. Stutter continues whether subtitles are on or off for all of them. I did find two movies that do not stutter- both are animes with 480 resolution; both have subtitles, and again, makes no difference whether subtitles or on or off. Are you still experience the issue with direct play? Re Direct Play- I don't know how to tell when something is direct playing or not; I can say that this only happens on the Roku- if I play anything on a laptop or on the PC the server is installed on (through the web app), there are no problems at all- the files play perfectly, subtitles work, etc.. Newbie question- Is there a way from the server to tell if something is currently direct playing on the Roku, or being transcoded? I assumed from the logs that anything going to the Roku would be transcoded... Edited December 10, 2018 by bsharp914
speechles 1962
Make sure you have the option "Show Extended Playback Info" enabled in the settings. Once that is done it will show in the video player OSD what is happening. Also, please use the Emby Beta app for Roku. When you see an issue use the playback menu (3 sliders like a graphic equalizer shown on the OSD) and choose "Playback Correction" and it might solve the issue. If this doesn't try to change quality in the playback menu to something lower. If nothing solves the issue this is likely a firmware error with Roku. I can't think of any reason (in the app) why it would stutter. It might also be environmental and something in how the Roku is either set up (poor wifi maybe?) or perhaps its something bigger. Do you have some of these videos you could share with us? I am always interested in new samples for the test library. Especially samples that expose firmware errors on Roku models. Please if you can put these on dropbox and post a link to them. While I don't have a Streaming Stick+ ATM I can buy one to test with and diagnose your issue. I only have a roku3 and roku ultra as test models presently. Edited December 10, 2018 by speechles

Wow- the stuttering problem is solved with Beta app. Although playback correction doesn't seem to help or change anything, changing the quality from Auto (80mbps) to 480 at 4mbps gets rid of stutter completely; since the test file I was using is 480 resolution, quality isn't really affected. I will try the same thing on a higher res files and see if the same is true there. I'm assuming from that result that I should probably look at how my network is setup. My wifi is extremely strong (Roku is only 10 feet from the router), but the server PC uses a netgear powerline network extender that should run at close to gigabit speed in theory- but I do wonder if that's contributing to the problem. It doesn't explain the laptop (on wifi) working correctly through the web app, but I can't think of anything else unusual or odd about how it's configured that might impact emby in any way. I don't have a dropbox account now, but I'll look into that this week; I'll happily post several files to use as test subjects once I do. Thanks so much for all the help, I really appreciate it! (edited to add more after trying several more files...) I turned on 'show extended playback info', and now I get a slightly different result when I press 'playback correction'- I now get "Playback Correction (REMUX)", after pressing that, I then get "Playback Correction (TRANSCODE). After pressing the second time, the file will play correctly and without stutter- but at a noticeably lower resolution, despite the quality option being unchanged from Auto (80Mbps). I have several I've tried now with basically that same result- the 1080 files play without stutter, but at what looks like 480 resolution.
