The desktop app has never used the windows player. At one point it was using directshow filters, and madVR. But that had many problems. You can still use external players. Then you can use whatever player you want. But the desktop app now uses mpv as it's player.

doofus, is there no way to have mpv use the windows hardware decoder?

Already aware of that - The store version using the internal player plays fine and 3.0.5 using mpv does not. Is it at all possible to re-implement the internal player, assuming this is not a Microsoft specific change to the code base?

Problem is that in all cases except for this, mpv is far and away the better player. It would be better to see if we can figure out how to have mpv use the windows decoder.

The mpv guys explained that to pass the HDR metadata, there is a windows swapchain that needs to be used. So until they get that done, we're stuck with how it is. I posted a link earlier with what jeeb is doing with that. But there's been no development for several months.

It's open source, so if you guys want to work on it, that would great.

I wonder what the holdup is to get that merged in.

I don't know, but you could grab it and build your own with it. By the looks of it, none of the checks have been developed. So it could simple crash the app on a lot of computers, if they haven't been configured, correctly. Or it'll send the HDR metadata without knowing if the GPU and display even support it.

It wouldn't surprise me if it never gets finished. From all the stuff I've read from these guys, they think HDR passthrough is junk. Just look what jeeb has called it... hdr_crapola. So I don't think it's a high priority for them.

I'll tell you what, though. If you guys got it working, you'd be leading everyone else.

The Nvidia 1050Ti that I had ordered has arrived and is now installed. The LG HDR file is playing OK on 3.0.5 through mpv, but subjectively slightly juddery compared to the store version using the internal player (blind tested by family members!). PLayback is HDR10 on Ctrl-J. The HDR indicator on the TV is only shown when HDR is enabled on the desktop. As Doofus said above, mpv does not as yet send the HDR metadata to the TV, and neither does the internal player.
